0166 Blindness

0166 Blindness

Jiang Jifan woke up the next day, which was the day the bandages were to be removed. Xiang Nannan came to stay with him early in the morning.

Yesterday, after learning that Jiang Jifan had woken up, she rushed to the hospital. When she saw her sitting on the bed, perfectly fine after being in a coma for more than a month, she was filled with mixed emotions of sorrow and joy. She hugged her and poured out her heart to her, crying and laughing at the same time.

Jiang Jifan had been unconscious for too long, which had greatly affected his body. Therefore, he was still somewhat dazed when he woke up. Seeing Xiang Nannan like this, he was at a loss.

Later, it was Tantai Qing who stepped forward to persuade her to stop, saying that Jiang Jifan had just woken up and couldn't withstand such a big emotional fluctuation.

Xiang Nannan then stopped her tears, which flowed like a river.

She sat next to Jiang Jifan while waiting for the doctor to come and remove the bandages.

Jiang Jifan touched her trembling hand and asked her what was wrong.

"I...I'm nervous..." Xiang Nannan stammered.

She chuckled lightly and said, "I'm the one who's going to remove the bandages, what are you afraid of?"

Xiang Nannan was naturally scared. It seemed that Tantai Qing hadn't told her yet...

The thought of what she might have to face made her anxious and even prepared herself for how Tantai Qing would steam or braise her.

The doctor arrived quickly. During the process of removing the gauze, Tantai Qing stood beside her. Although his expression was calm, his tightly clenched palms betrayed his nervousness.

The thick gauze was lifted layer by layer, and it immediately made it much easier to breathe.

"Open your eyes."

Jiang Jifan did as instructed, but all he saw was boundless darkness.

The doctor waved his hand in front of her face a few times and asked, "Can you see anything?"

She closed her eyes and then opened them again, repeating this several times, but all she could see was darkness.

"I can't see it."

Upon hearing this, Tantai Qing's heart sank.

Despite having prepared for the worst, he still couldn't calm down after learning the truth.

When Jiang Jifan heard the doctor say the word "blindness," his mind went blank, his ears rang, and the sound of their conversation seemed to come from a very far place.

"...Thank you, doctor."

After the doctor left, Xiang Nannan cautiously looked up at Tantai Qing, only to see him standing calmly by the bed, as if he had long been prepared to face this fact. However, his eyes held a hint of pity and sorrow when he looked at Jiang Jifan.

The thought that Jiang Jifan might have to live in darkness forever filled her with immense shame and guilt.

"I'm sorry, Ji Fan, it's all because of me..." Xiang Nannan felt more and more ashamed as she thought about it, and couldn't help but sit down next to her and cry.

Jiang Jifan's pale lips trembled a few times, but he managed to force a smile and uttered in an extremely flat voice, "It's okay."

Her empty smile was particularly jarring to Tantai Qing. He took a deep breath and stepped forward to separate the two of them.

"Don't cry, Nan Nan."

Upon suddenly learning this fact, Jiang Jifan must have been devastated, and Tantai Qing did not want her to be affected by external emotions any further.

Xiang Nan Nan sniffed, saying "Okay" while choking back tears as she reached out to wipe them from her face.

Tantai Qing helped Jiang Jifan lie down, and without turning her head, said, "Nannan, you should go back first, and come again tomorrow."

"I..." Xiang Nannan stood there uneasy, wanting to say something, but not knowing where to begin. In the end, she could only agree and leave.

Jiang Jifan lay blankly on the bed, his empty eyes staring straight at the ceiling above him, not blinking, seemingly lost in thought.

What does "blindness" mean?

Blindness means she can no longer live as freely as before; blindness means she has lost the ability to live independently and will have to rely on others to make a living; blindness means she has lost everything that she could be proud of, such as her job…

No company would hire a blind person as a manager.

“The doctor said there is still a chance to cure your eyes.” Tantai Qing held her hand and comforted her, “Jifan, believe me, even if there is only a 0.1% chance, I will do my best to find that chance.”

Waking up to find that you, who were once healthy, have become blind is a devastating thought.

Therefore, Tantai Qing could not openly say "it's okay" to her. The only thing he could do now was to find that tiny chance for her to regain her sight.

Jiang Jifan closed his eyes, unwilling to be disturbed by anything from the outside world.

"Let me be alone."

After confirming that he had closed the door and left, she used her only healthy left hand to pull the blanket up and cover herself.

Even now, Jiang Jifan still doesn't regret protecting Xiang Nannan with his body during the car accident, but he finds it hard to accept his current situation.

At this moment, she should have burst into tears, but she couldn't squeeze out a single tear. The only feeling she had was numbness, as if her five senses were sealed off, or as if she had suddenly realized that she wasn't the one who was blind.

She pulled the blanket tighter around her, and the air in the cramped space gradually dissipated, making it feel stuffy and suffocating. At that moment, an idea suddenly popped into Jiang Jifan's mind.

Let's just suffocate her.

With that thought in mind, she tightly covered the only gap, and her breathing became increasingly difficult.

"Splash!"

Someone pulled back her blanket.

Fresh air rushed into her nasal cavity instantly, allowing her to breathe again.

When Tantai Qing saw her slightly pale face and slightly rapid breathing, he immediately understood what she had just been doing. His chest felt like it had been hit hard by a hammer, making him speechless.

"You'll suffocate yourself like this," he said softly, looking down at her, trying to control his emotions.

He lied to her.

He never left the room, so the footsteps and the sound of the door closing were all an illusion he created.

Knowing the truth, Jiang Jifan couldn't help but feel annoyed, as if he were a clown putting on a show in front of him, feeling extremely embarrassed.

She was so angry that she tried to turn over, but forgot that she had difficulty moving her hands and feet. She only managed to lift her body a little before being forced to lie back down.

Since that's the case, Jiang Jifan simply lay on the bed with his eyes closed, like a corpse, using silence to block out his voice.

Seeing this, Tantai Qing silently shut his mouth and sat down quietly by her bedside, but he remained vigilant. He tucked the blanket around her but did not put it down.

"Jifan, it's nine in the morning. Are you hungry? Do you want breakfast? Bread or noodles...?"

"You're being noisy," Jiang Jifan finally couldn't help but say.

She couldn't understand why he, who always seemed so restrained and reserved, would talk so much.

Tantai Qing choked.

What she didn't know was that in the days before she was fully conscious, he talked to her several times more every day than he does now.

He was only disappointed for a short while before quickly adjusting his emotions.

"Then I won't say anything. Just call me if you want to do anything."

Tantai Qing retreated and sat down on the sofa to the side.

Jiang Jifan didn't bother to call him out and closed his eyes on his own.
