"Tell me, how do you feel now?"
Aragon looked up to see Zoan walking up to him while crushing one of the Rogue Vampires by the neck, till it became lifeless.
"The Happiest man on earth, right?" Zoan continued, his tone harsh with blame and anger. He had also witnessed what had just happened to Zoan, the blast of energy that had come from inside the smoke and hit Elliott.
Aragon looked back at the pieces of ice on the floor, and back at his brother. The darkness in his heart and his eyes had vanished for the time being and all he could see, all he could think of was what he had done.
It was what he had caused, and how Elliott had sacrificed himself for him. A loser like him.
"He thought you were up to something, and came rushing to get me. Looks like you’ve already gone far with your schemes," Zoan rubbed his temper. He was still trying to comprehend what he was seeing in front of him. How could Aragon have... done this? Where did he find the heartlessness to do this to so many innocent humans?
Since Zoan arrived here, he’s been killing off the rogues while Elliott had run to find Aragon. But so far, Zoan hadn’t met any human alive. None of them had stood a chance against the Vampires.
"Are you done with your madness?! Or is there still more to come?!" Zoan cried, utterly frustrated and fuming.
The longer he stared at the ice pieces on the floor, the more it dawned on him that Elliott was truly gone.
"Brother...!"
Zoan rushed forward and gripped Aragon by the neck, "Who the hell is your brother?! You’ve killed off the only brother you have!"
"It wasn’t me," Aragon murmured with his eyes closed, "I could never...it wasn’t me!"
"How dare you! You led him to his death!!" And Zoan flung Aragon away, and he crashed into a burning house and the logs of woods fell on him, "You killed Elliott!! You’re a monster and you don’t deserve to live! Bring Elliott back right now! Bring him back...!!" Zoan cried heavily and fell on his knees, clutching his heart.
He reached out and took some pieces of the ice into his arms, "Elly...God, no, Elly...,"
Aragon just laid there, wishing he was the one who was burning.
"You will Pay for this, Aragon! I will make sure you Pay for all this, with your life! I will never forgive you. Bring Elliott back right now!! Bring him...!"
Aragon now had another experience that would haunt him for the rest of his life. He grabbed his hair and pulled hair, crying with a loud and bitter scream. If only he could go back in time, even if it was just a little.
He would make sure he was the one who had died.
And if only he could trade his life...!
Zoan was still crying when he saw Aragon coming toward him. His eyes blazed red and he cursed out loud, "Why aren’t you dead?! Why haven’t you killed yourself, yet?!"
Aragon said to him hoarsely, "We might...be able to bring him back to life,"
"What are you talking about?!"
"There’s a woman that lives... somewhere inside the Dark Forest. She has the power to bring the dead back to life," Aragon’s eyes remained glued to the ground. He could hardly raise his head and look into the pain of his brother’s eyes.
"Power to bring the dead back to life? No one has such power!"
"We need to try. We have to find her soon. Please, we have to do whatever we can to save Elliott,"
"If you pull another shit...,"
"I won’t. I can’t even if I wanted to,"
Zoan could never trust Aragon again. But, he would do anything to see Elliott again and if Aragon claims he knows someone who can help, then they would have to go.
The brothers gathered the pieces of ice from the floor and headed to the Dark Forest. The ice was so cold that not even the smallest piece had begun to melt.
The Dark Forest has always been out of bounds to everyone because it was said that whoever steps foot inside of it, can never come out alive. The few who managed to make it out were never the same again and had become mentally ill.
But Zoan was ready to risk it all for Elliott.
And so did Aragon.
The Dark Forest had no trees with leaves, instead every tree around was filled with the sharpest of thorns. There was a legend that said that the most powerful of Vampires and witches had fought a battle here years ago, and the remains of their powers were what formed the Dark Forest.
No one has confirmed this legend to be true.
As soon as Zoan stepped in, warning bells went off in him. Deep down he knew he should turn back and leave before it was too late but he just couldn’t. His compulsion to save Elliott no matter how little the chances might be, was greater than any fear that hit him.
The brothers continued to wander around the forest, till Zoan came across something strange.
He turned around to ask Aragon if he knew what it was, but Aragon was nowhere to be found.
Meanwhile, Aragon had also noticed Zoan was no longer with him. The Dark Forest had separated them without them even knowing when or how thinking they were still together. Zoan had been the one carrying the pieces of ice because he wouldn’t let Aragon touch them, saying he would stain them with his filth.
"Looks like your brother has found the Forbidden Smoke," Hera said.
Aragon whipped around, only to find an old woman sitting on a huge thorn. She looked so old and weak and was putting on a cloak that covered everywhere except her face.
"Forbidden Smoke?"
"A smoke that snatches life. It might blend with him, it might kill him..." Hera shrugged.
"Are you the rumored being who can bring a person back to life?" Aragon asked.
"Well, I should be able to but I’ve never tried it before. It’s dangerous to bring someone back to life, you know," Although she looked old, her voice sounded so young and alive.
"Please. He’s my brother, and he wasn’t supposed to die. Even if it means trading my life for him, I will gladly do it,"
Hera sighed, "I Know you will, but I cannot control who’s life would be traded. And so, I have to pay the price, instead," She replied.
"What do you mean?" Aragon swallowed.
"It means I’m far too old for this. You killed the healer, Aragon!" She exclaimed strongly and suddenly, making Aragon jump a little, "You killed her, and now my powers are disappearing so fast I’m aging without control,"
Healer?! Did she mean the woman he had killed last? The one that could control the minds of other Super creatures? Also, she did look a lot older now. Her skin looked like it was gonna sag off.
"And now you come to a weak woman, begging," Hera shook her head in disdain, "Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can do about your brother,"
"Please! There has to be something you can do. There has to be something!!" Aragon cried, breathing hard, "You’re the only hope I have left. You’re the only hope Elliott has left. Please, just try something. Use me as you wish. I’ll do anything. I’ll pay anything!"
Hera chuckled this time, "I wouldn’t encourage anyone to even try and bring anything back to life. Let us keep things the way they are, and not tamper with them because we can. I cannot help you, Aragon Odysseus, not because I can’t... but because I will not,"
And just like that, she came falling off the tree through the front and landed on her back. She landed like a stiff board, unmoving like she wasn’t human.
When Aragon moved closer and checked, he saw that she was dead.
