Chapter 31 Building a House

After finishing all the division of the family property, the young couple started preparing to build a house, and all the men in the village who were on good terms with them came to help.

Tingting and Jianjun prepared all the distributed grain to make pancakes for everyone, and also took out three rabbits from their space to provide one meal a day and give them 2 yuan a day.

Generally, if someone in the village is building a house, people who get along well with them will go out of their way to help. When they see that there are flatbreads made from two kinds of dough and wild rabbit meat, everyone is very enthusiastic and eager to help.

Nowadays, houses are all built with mud and stones. If you want a brick and tile house, you can only find them in towns. These are the houses in the countryside now.

Jianjun saw that Tingting was a little depressed and said to her, "These days, houses in the countryside are all like this. They make a fortune quietly, you know?"

"Don't underestimate this house made of loess. It's warm in winter and cool in summer. We'll build four rooms and a cooking area. It'll also be suitable for children in the future."

"How many babies will they have? Enough to fill four rooms," Tingting asked.

"Let nature take its course. It's not like we can't afford to raise them. With so much food in our hands, how can we let the child go hungry? We might as well just pretend we're a tofu block."

Tingting was amused by Jianjun's words.

The money the two of them had allocated for building the house was almost gone. They were happy because it meant they no longer had to eat secretly; they could eat well and have children.

Grandma Guo gave the young couple two bowls and chopsticks, a clay pot for cooking, and many other jars and mats for storing things.

Nowadays, people use mats to cover the kang (a heated brick bed), and there's no issue with a bad mother-in-law. Although the five fingers are of different lengths, they are all my own children, and I cherish them all.

The two didn't plan to touch the firewood at home, since there were too many people in the family. Instead, they planned to collect it from the mountain. Although they had coal in their space, they generally didn't intend to use it.

The two of them went up the mountain to continue collecting firewood, gathering quite a lot of it using their spatial abilities.

When they encountered pheasants or rabbits, they would put them directly into their spatial storage, either to eat themselves or to exchange for money. On the way down the mountain, they also killed two wild boars.

The two of them filled all the firewood in the woodpile outside, just to show it to others.

The house, which was not usually occupied, was used to store jars and other miscellaneous items. Outside, there was a mud wall and yard, which was specially raised when it was built to prevent people from climbing over the wall.

After discussing it with their parents, the two moved into the house they had built themselves. They were very excited to have their first home in this era, and felt a sense of satisfaction, finally feeling that they were truly living in this era.

The two of them laid out the hot pot, beer, drinks, and seafood in the room, ready to have a feast tonight and celebrate. Since it was dark and there was no electricity, they took out a kerosene lamp, which became their candlelight dinner in this era.

After finishing their meal, the two spread the blankets from the space onto the kang (a heated brick bed), heated it until it was warm, and then prepared to take a bath. This was the first time they had been able to take a bath outside since they arrived.

After tidying up, the two prepared for bed. Looking at his wife under the lamplight, Jianjun found her more and more beautiful. He kissed her, and the two fell asleep in each other's arms.

The next day, when the two of them got up, it had already started to snow lightly outside. They drank millet porridge and ate two stir-fried dishes for breakfast, and then decided what to do.

"Honey, let's cook together. We don't have much to do right now, so I'm going to make a lot of things."

"We won't need to cook when it gets too cold. Then we'll organize the prey we've hunted during this time."
