Chapter Twelve: A Tremendous Change

b is big.

Looking at his well-dressed self in the mirror, Gu Yiming couldn't help but recall Jiang Hua's words from last night: "I'll wait for you."

Gu Yiming couldn't help but smile again. It was so nice to be able to be close to her every day like this.

Gu Yiming looked at his smiling self in the mirror, straightened his bow tie, grabbed his briefcase, and went out.

Actually, when Jiang Hua asked him to play online games with her every day, Gu Yiming couldn't refuse. However, he had to return to his alma mater today to give a homecoming speech. When he received the principal's call, he thought about it for a long time, and was also stunned for a long time, recalling many things from his high school days. He felt that he had to go back to see his old school and think about his youthful stories. To the outside world, Gu Yiming said that he was going back to visit his teachers and reminisce about his youth.

In truth, only he knew: the most important thing was that Jiang Hua was in that high school, in that youth.

In truth, Gu Yiming's most direct memory of Jiang Hua was just that of one of the many students in his class. Even though Jiang Hua had good grades and many boys in the class had crushes on her, he didn't pay her much attention or take the initiative to approach her. Actually, many girls in the entire grade had crushes on Gu Yiming, but he remained indifferent. He always felt that physical appearance was a gift from his parents and couldn't be changed; what he wanted to understand was people's true hearts, and only truly kind-hearted people were worthy of his friendship.

So when Jiang Hua's beautiful face first appeared in Gu Yiming's eyes, he didn't show her much attention or try to please her. But later, Gu Yiming gradually discovered that Jiang Hua was different from others; she had a pure and kind heart.

Later, Gu Yiming also unknowingly fell in love with Jiang Hua during their time together, and had long admired her.

As soon as Gu Yiming got out of the car, he found the school's director waiting for him downstairs in the teaching building.

"Yiming, you've finally arrived." The director warmly shook his hand.

"Principal, we've been waiting for you for ages."

"Come on, come this way. The principal's office has been moved here now," the director said, leading the way.

"Okay." Gu Yiming followed behind, neither humble nor arrogant. His handsome appearance attracted many students to come out and watch.

After arriving at the principal's office, the principal exchanged a few pleasantries with Gu Yiming and then led him to the auditorium for the lecture.

"Dear teachers and students, I am very happy to have this opportunity to give this speech at my alma mater at the invitation of the principal." Gu Yiming paused slightly as a gesture. "At your age, perhaps grades are the most important thing, and perhaps you have many different ideas in your hearts, but I believe in you. You will eventually find your own place in the world. I don't want to say any empty platitudes, but what I want to tell you is that the people and events of your youth are worth cherishing for a lifetime, so never give up on the people around you." Gu Yiming spoke eloquently on the stage, but in his eyes, he saw Jiang Hua smiling at him.

Yes, Jiang Hua was probably the most precious thing in his youth.

During his speech, Gu Yiming didn't forget the principal's purpose in inviting him. After sharing some learning experiences and encouraging his younger schoolmates to strive for excellence and get into B University, he concluded his speech. Gu Yiming declined the principal's kind offer to have dinner with him, saying, "Principal, I'd like to take a walk around the school and have a look around." Gu Yiming smiled again.

A man walked around the campus for a long time, past the books and flowers, past the teaching buildings and classrooms, and finally sat down on the stairs next to the playground.

When Gu Yiming was in his second year of high school, a huge upheaval occurred in his family. A stock market crash swept through his family; his disheartened father became addicted to alcohol, and his once gentle mother turned mercenary, becoming extremely demanding of Gu Yiming and placing all her hopes on him. Gu Yiming was just a teenager at the time, feeling helpless and powerless in the face of his family's changes. Gradually, his parents' arguments increased, and they constantly threatened to divorce him.

Gu Yiming could only watch helplessly as these things unfolded.

Just as Gu Yiming was spending his afternoons playing basketball alone on the court, Jiang Hua appeared in his field of vision.

"Gu, why do you play ball here alone every afternoon?" Gu Yiming still remembers her asking him that question with such a warm smile.

Despite the fact that her gentle and warm smile made his heart flutter, he still ignored her.

"Oh, don't be so cold," she said, hopping around him and asking questions.

Gu Yiming still ignored him, focusing only on playing basketball and sweating profusely.

Later, Jiang Hua would accompany him to play ball every afternoon, sometimes bringing him ice water, sometimes bringing him an ice pop. When Gu Yiming scored, Jiang Hua would cheer for him alone, and when he missed, she would laugh at him playfully.

At first, Gu Yiming found it annoying, wondering why he couldn't get rid of her no matter what he did. But gradually, Gu Yiming got used to her company.

Later, Gu Yiming and Jiang Hua gradually became familiar with each other. They would discuss difficult problems from class, and occasionally Jiang Hua would vent to him about some gossip in the class. In the twilight of the setting sun, the golden afterglow bathed them, and the faces of the young boy and girl were filled with the budding joy of youth. Later, Gu Yiming told her about what had happened in his family, and Jiang Hua felt very sorry for him.

“You don’t need to feel guilty. These things aren’t your fault, and you couldn’t have predicted them. I don’t know how to comfort you. All I can say is that time heals all wounds, and you should smile, like me. Look.” As she spoke, Jiang Hua gave him a huge, bright smile.

"Thank you. May I ask why you came to watch me play basketball before?" Gu Yiming asked her seriously.

“Actually, I didn’t notice anything unusual about you at first. It was only later, when my classmates and I were cleaning, that I noticed you often came to the basketball court alone with your backpack. I guessed you had something on your mind, so I wanted to keep you company and cheer you up.” Jiang Hua smiled at him. “Hey, you know what? Actually, at first, you always refused me and told me to leave, and I was a little angry. But then I thought about how unexpectedly you refused to sign the visa, and I figured you must be feeling really sad. So I thought you probably wanted to talk to someone and confide in them.” Jiang Hua tilted her head and smiled.

Gu Yiming turned his head, looked into the distance, and said to her in a muffled voice, "Thank you, Jiang Hua."
