Chapter 36 The Disappearance of Kaka

After finishing the noodles, Ji Lin'an went to wash the dishes. I walked around the farm twice, checked Kaka's location on my phone, and found that she was still in the town. Curious, I called Kaka, but no one answered. Seeing Ji Lin'an finish washing the dishes and come out of the kitchen, I ran up to her and said, "How about we go to the town?"

Ji Lin'an looked behind me: "How do we get there? Using skills? Isn't that too extravagant?"

I shook my head and pointed to the stable next to the sheepfold: "Aren't there horses here?"

I raised an eyebrow and smiled at Ji Lin'an, who frowned and said, "I'm not very good at riding horses; I've only ridden them for fun at the training ground."

I proudly gave myself a thumbs up and said, "I can do it! Although I haven't ridden in a long time, I took riding lessons when I was a kid."

Ji Lin'an smiled faintly: "When you were little? How little?"

I smiled, squinting my eyes: "When I was a teenager."

Ji Lin'an shook his head helplessly: "You were a teenager a long time ago, are you sure it's safe?"

I pulled Ji Lin'an towards the stables: "Hey, just think of it as riding for fun. If we can't ride back, there's always Wufeng, right? Let me tell you, I'm not bragging, the horses are really friendly to me."

As we approached the stables, Ji Lin'an looked at me with a wry smile: "Are you really going to ride? I'm afraid you'll get hurt."

I pouted and said coquettishly, "Let's try it! I really want to ride a horse. Don't worry, I'll make sure we're both safe."

After saying that, I walked up to the windless, brownish-red horse. I didn't know its name. The windless horse was very handsome, with long bangs on its forehead that were braided into two pigtails. When it saw me coming, it twitched its nose and exhaled two breaths. I slowly walked closer and said, "Horse, horse, we are your brother Wufeng's friends. We would like to ask you for a favor. Could you take us to town?"

Seeing that the horse didn't seem to mind, I approached it and gently stroked its face. It immediately turned to look at me. I took two steps, reached for the haystack next to the stable, grabbed a handful of grass, and placed it near the horse's mouth. It stuck out its long tongue and rolled the grass into its mouth. I looked at Ji Lin'an happily. Ji Lin'an leaned against a wooden pillar and smiled at me. I pressed my advantage and continued to stroke the horse. It seemed quite happy and raised its head to look at me. I then reached for two carrots and held them to the horse's mouth. I turned to Ji Lin'an and said, "Lin'an, come here."

Ji Lin'an walked towards me, and I handed her the carrot so she could continue feeding it. I turned around and went into the stable to untie the reins and lead it out. It didn't resist and slowly followed me out of the stable. Ji Lin'an held half a carrot in her hand and said, "It seems to be in a good mood."

I nodded excitedly, "Yes, I think we should be able to ride it out."

I led the horse to an open space, walked up to it, stroked its cheeks with both hands, and gently nudged its head against itss: "Good horse, take us to the town, okay? When we come back, I'll give you lots and lots of carrots."

Seeing that the horse was in stable condition, I quickly waved to Ji Lin'an: "I'll go up and check on its reaction first. If there's no problem, you can come up too."

Ji Lin'an nodded. I stepped into the stirrups and mounted the saddle, then led the reins around the farm twice. The horse cooperated obediently, showing no resistance. I immediately stopped the horse, and Ji Lin'an mounted behind me. I adjusted the direction and headed out of the farm. After walking slowly for a while, I began to accelerate until the horse started galloping. Ji Lin'an wrapped his arms around my waist, and I placed the reins in his hands, opened my arms, and cheered: "This is the life I've always dreamed of, Lin'an! Let's live here forever, okay?"

The wind was so strong that I couldn't hear what Ji Lin'an was saying, but I knew he agreed with me. I don't know how long we rode, but we occasionally encountered lone zombies on the road. The horses weren't worried at all. We stopped the horses, sat on them, and shot the zombies to kill them, completing our mission. We continued like this, stopping and starting along the way, until we arrived at the town.

Ji Lin'an handed me the reins and checked Kaka's location on his phone. The location was within the town, not far from us. We continued to ride our horses and track him, stopping in front of a supermarket. Ji Lin'an and I dismounted and tied our horses to a roadside utility pole. I dialed Kaka's number again, but there was still no answer. Ji Lin'an gave me a gun, and we cautiously walked into the store with the guns in hand.

The store was in a terrible mess, with shelves lying askew on the floor. It was completely different from the home improvement and appliance stores. The shelves had long been looted, perhaps because residents and tourists had come to buy things at the beginning of the apocalypse. I called out softly into the store, "Kaka?"

There was no response, so I raised my voice: "Kaka?"

Still no movement. Ji Lin'an and I continued walking into the supermarket, searching for Kaka's whereabouts, but to no avail. When we reached the back door of the supermarket, I saw Wufeng's van. Ji Lin'an and I exchanged a glance, and Ji Lin'an mouthed "Be careful." We walked towards the parking lot, which was quite empty, with only two or three trucks and Wufeng's van. Ji Lin'an and I approached the van and looked closely, but we didn't find Kaka. We only saw Kaka's phone in the back seat.

Ji Lin'an and I split up and started looking for Kaka everywhere. We searched almost every corner of the supermarket but couldn't find her. Ji Lin'an and I returned to the car, and just when we were at a loss, I suddenly saw a set of car keys under a truck. The logo on the keys wasn't the logo of the two trucks. I looked down at Wufeng's van and the logo matched. I immediately patted Ji Lin'an on the shoulder, pointed to the keys on the ground, and ran over. When I got close, Ji Lin'an pulled me back and led me to her side.

Ji Lin'an bent down, picked up the key, and pressed it twice. Sure enough, the door of the van opened. We turned around and walked towards the van. Ji Lin'an went first. As I turned around, I suddenly saw out of the corner of my eye that the door of the truck in front of me, where I had picked up the key, was slightly open. I slowly walked in and carefully used the tip of my gun to pry open the door. Inside was Kaka. I immediately called Ji Lin'an over.

In an instant, a figure rushed out from behind the cargo behind Kaka. I nimbly turned and dodged, then turned again, raising my gun and aiming it at the car door. A man jumped out of the trunk. Seeing me with a gun, the man stopped in front of the trunk and raised his hands. Ji Lin'an rushed over upon hearing the commotion, pointing his gun at the man. He glanced back at me and asked, "Are you alright? Are you hurt?"

I shook my head: "It's nothing, I was just startled."

Ji Lin'an pointed his gun at the man: "Who are you? What did you do to the girl in the carriage?"
