Ji Lin smiled with relief: "You've become much more cautious."
I looked at Ji Lin'an with a serious expression: "I've seen you die too many times."
We stayed in the car for a few minutes. Luckily, when the apocalypse started, Ji Lin'an found some leftover privacy film on the car windows in the warehouse. We found a tutorial online and together we put it on the windshield. You can't see anything inside the car unless you put it on your face. Before the apocalypse, this level of privacy would have gotten us a fine and points deducted from our licenses by the traffic police.
Ten minutes later, five people emerged from not far from the car—three men and two women. Some were carrying watermelon knives, others baseball bats. Each of them held one or two bags, full of contents, in their other hands. One of the men in the middle suddenly stopped, tucked his baseball bat under his arm, and reached into his pocket. He rummaged around for a moment, then dropped a bag, spilling a box of instant noodles. He quickly picked it up. The group walked to the car, opened the trunk, and put all the bags inside. They got into the gray SUV, started it, and drove towards us. Even with the privacy screen, I instinctively reached out and pressed Ji Lin'an's head down as they approached.
Ji Lin'an asked in a low voice, "Why are you so scared? I didn't put on that expensive privacy screen protector for nothing."
I immediately made a gesture: "Shh, wait until they leave before you talk, I'm nervous."
Ji Lin'an looked up slightly and saw the group drive away before standing up: "Get up, they're gone."
I took a deep breath: "Did you see that? Their knives are still dripping blood, and there's blood on their baseball bats too. Zombies don't have blood, so what they're carrying is probably mostly supplies. No one would walk around carrying valuable supplies; they're probably just scavenging nearby. If they encounter resistance, they'll just kill them."
Ji Lin'an nodded: "Not bad, your analysis is quite logical now."
I pouted: "I don't have time to joke with you. My heart was pounding when I saw them coming. I was afraid they would find us. I've gained weight recently, and I'm afraid they'll think we have a lot of supplies just because I've gained weight, like Zhu Chen did."
Ji Lin'an laughed and said, "If they really come, don't we have the Anywhere Door? We can just run away."
I patted my chest: "That's right, I forgot everything when I was nervous. Should we still go save the little girl? I felt like those people came from that direction, maybe... the little girl and the old woman are already..."
Ji Lin'an turned around and picked up the drone from the back seat: "Let me take a look with the drone."
Ji Lin'an released the drone, lowered its altitude, and hid among the buildings. Just as the camera was about to reach the zombie-infested area, we suddenly heard the sound of a car driving behind us. I turned around and saw the gray SUV that had been carrying the group of people speeding up to within 15 meters of us. A man in the car was waving a knife at us and whistling mockingly. I quickly told Ji Lin'an to start the car. Ji Lin'an glanced back quickly, then tossed the drone remote control to the back seat, started the car, and slammed on the gas. The gray SUV accelerated just as fast, almost keeping pace with us. The woman in the passenger seat said happily, "I told you, there was definitely someone in that car."
Just as Ji Lin'an was launching the drone and hadn't had time to close the car window, the person in the gray SUV was extremely excited, like a hungry wolf seeing meat.
One of the men in the car said, "Why don't you two stop the car and let's have a chat? Don't drive so fast."
Ji Lin'an's forehead was already sweating, and his foot on the accelerator never stopped. I suddenly realized what was happening and grabbed Ji Lin'an's hand, ready to use the Anywhere Door. Ji Lin'an suddenly shook off my hand and said in a voice only I could hear, "Don't go back yet. They've already seen us. If we suddenly disappear, they'll be curious. This place is too close to where we live. They'll find us sooner or later. I'll lure them in the opposite direction, shake them off, and then we'll use the Anywhere Door to go back."
I pondered Ji Lin'an's words, then turned to look at the people in the gray SUV. I saw a man sitting in the back seat, close to us, leaning out with a baseball bat, ready to smash our car. I yelled, "Watch out!" Ji Lin'an swerved to the right, but because the car was going too fast, he turned the steering wheel too much, and our car began to swerve. Ji Lin'an struggled to regain control, but the gray SUV remained close behind.
Ji Lin'an frowned and looked ahead: "Can you give me directions? I remember there's some kind of mountain nearby. Let's go up the mountain."
I exclaimed excitedly, "It's Fengqi Mountain!"
"right!"
I immediately turned on the navigation and sped along the route. When we reached the halfway point of the mountain, Ji Lin'an said, "Get ready, I'm going to drive the car off the cliff in a bit. Once the car is off the cliff, we'll go back."
I said okay, and grabbed Ji Lin'an with both hands. When the car was driving on an S-curve, Ji Lin'an didn't turn the steering wheel. Our car crashed violently through the guardrail and rushed out. The hands that were holding Ji Lin'an were shaken off. I used all my strength to reach out and grab Ji Lin'an and shouted back and forth.
I made it home safely once again. Heaven knows how much I love my skills at this moment. I couldn't help but pick up my phone and kiss it. Ji Lin'an slumped to the ground, his hands still trembling. I got up and poured him a glass of water. He shook his head, lowered his head, and gasped for breath.
I walked over to Ji Lin'an: "Are you alright?"
Ji Lin'an didn't answer, but waved his hand. After a few minutes, he suddenly laughed: "This is much more exciting than killing zombies. I never thought my racing dream would come true like this."
I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw Ji Lin'an smile, and handed him the water again. Ji Lin'an took it and drank it all in one gulp.
