"Wrong..."
"It must be wrong..."
Elisha turned around and saw a scene he would never forget.
Just one glance and he felt shortness of breath and trembling legs.
Because, just above the city gate, on the city wall, he saw a row of heads pierced by spears and hung high.
Those human heads have now become some kind of "exhibits".
And Elisha could clearly make out those faces in the moonlight.
It's David's accompanying officers!
At the city gate, Elisha saw a face that was very familiar to him.
He didn't dare to identify it, but his eyes uncontrollably looked towards the top of the city gate.
"Wrong, wrong!"
"Impossible, Brother David was captured, but he's still alive!"
"He's not dead!"
Elisha muttered to himself and took a few steps back.
Yes, David's head was hanging high up there.
His jaw was bent, his mouth was open, and his eyes were still open.
His expression was frozen in eternal agony.
But just a few hours ago, earlier, David's expression was gentle.
Elisha still remembered what the other person said to him while he was eating.
"ah!"
Elisha only felt a loud "boom" in his head. He felt that the whole world was collapsing, as if some force appeared even under his feet, pulling his body.
Elisha subconsciously wanted to run away, but his legs trembled and he fell to the ground with a thud.
He rolled and crawled, trying desperately to get up, but at this moment, he clearly saw similar scenes appearing on both sides of the road.
On both sides of the road, more heads were impaled on sharp wooden sticks and lined up along the road.
It was a kind of decoration for the road.
"No--"
Elisha's voice caught in his throat and turned into a soundless scream.
A strong feeling of dizziness came over him, and he felt dizzy and as if the whole world was collapsing.
David, his only protector and mentor, died tragically at the hands of his enemies.
And those soldiers who followed David, those familiar faces who had greeted Elisha, have now become headless corpses.
“No, no, no…”
“That’s not true…”
Elisha couldn't believe it. In just one night, Hebron had turned into a bloody city again.
He muttered to himself, in denial of the reality before him.
At this moment, a pair of hands came from behind him in the darkness and pulled him into a dark area beside the road.
Just as Elisha was about to struggle, a hand covered his mouth tightly.
"If you want to live, keep quiet."
A deep voice sounded in his ears.
Elisha froze, his mind going blank.
He couldn't utter a word.
In extreme terror, he realized that he was gradually losing consciousness, his body falling uncontrollably and falling into darkness.
After an unknown amount of time, a sharp pain pulled Elisha back to reality from the darkness.
He slowly opened his eyes and saw an old face full of wrinkles staring at him.
"I'm glad you woke up."
The old man whispered, looking around warily.
Elisha suddenly opened his eyes wide and remembered the scenes he had seen before.
As soon as he opened his mouth, the old man immediately reached out and covered it tightly.
"Shh, don't make any noise."
Only then did Elisha notice that he was in a small basement. The air was filled with the smell of mold, some herbs, and of course, the smell of excrement.
There were about twenty people crowded around him, mostly women and children, and the few adult men were all elderly or weak.
"I...why am I here?"
Elisha turned his head in confusion.
"I dragged you in here, boy."
The old man explained, and only turned to tend to someone else's wound after making sure Elisha wouldn't yell.
"I came out to collect herbs today, and I didn't expect something like this to happen in Hebron."
"I was going to save you, but you suddenly fainted."
"Luckily no one didn't notice, otherwise..."
He didn't finish, but Elisha understood.
Otherwise, he would be like those who were hung on the city wall.
"Brother David..."
"Is everyone in the city dead?"
He choked and tears fell again.
The old man sighed: "Yes, we all saw it."
"No one knows where they came from. I'm afraid there aren't many people left in the city."
Elisha could no longer control his emotions, tears welled up in his eyes: "Why...why would they do this..."
A woman in the corner took over the conversation, but her voice sounded even more tired.
"Because they hate us, hate our empire, hate our privileges, hate that we treat them like ants."
"They regard us as remnants of the old empire and are determined to exterminate us."
"That's what I heard their soldiers say."
Elisha continued speaking.
"But...but there are innocent people here!"
"We are not the remnants of the old empire! We are the new Hebrew Empire!"
