The two looked at each other, as they had never seen anything like this before.
Xiao Cheng stared at the corpse for a long time until his eyes ached. Finally, his patience ran out. He moved closer and kicked the corpse's leg with his toe, but received no response.
"It's not moving? This doesn't seem like a resurrection." She carefully observed the raised hand, tried to bend it, but as soon as she let go, the arm sprang back to its original position, showing remarkable resilience.
Fang He frowned slightly: "Look at this number eight, doesn't it look like an arrow?"
Xiao Cheng looked puzzled: "Should such a shocking hint even exist?"
Fang He didn't speak. He squatted down and followed the direction the tiger's mouth was pointing, all the way down, finally settling on the corpse's right chest, which was not yet decomposed.
"Do you want to use it?" Xiao Cheng handed him a shard of mirror. "I think you'd like to cut it open and take a look."
Fang He did not refuse. He gently pressed on the corpse's chest, chose a spot that would thaw quickly, and neatly pierced the tip of the shard into it.
No blood flowed out; the edges of the tear in the skin curled up, turning slightly white.
The shards of mirror were much sharper than he had imagined. Fang He avoided the ribs, his cutting movements decisive and skillful, like a highly skilled surgeon.
He cut off that entire piece of skin and flesh.
Xiao Cheng stared in disbelief: "Master, what did you do for a living before?"
"Just an ordinary working man." Fang He didn't even raise his head as a shard of mirror wedged into his right lung through the gap in his ribs.
Suddenly, he paused, then tossed aside the shards of mirror, inserted his fingers into the cut he had just made, fumbled around for a while, and pulled out half a key covered in blood and foam.
"Found it." He sat down on the ground, let out a long breath, and tossed the key steadily into Xiao Cheng's hand. "Try it and see if you can restore it."
It was exactly 6:00 PM.
Holding the assembled key, Xiao Cheng walked cautiously towards the building entrance. Fang He stood behind her, constantly on guard for the digital humans to appear.
"I'm opening the door." Xiao Cheng inserted the key into the lock and tried to turn it.
With a click, the lock opened, and she pushed open the heavy steel door, glancing somewhat dazedly at the empty wilderness outside. A rush of fresh air filled her face, the setting sun dipped below the horizon, and the scattered afterglow painted the sky a smoky purple.
As if bewitched, she walked towards the door, when she suddenly heard Fang He whisper in her ear, "Xiao Cheng! Stop!"
Suddenly regaining his senses, Xiao Cheng's vision went dark. He turned around in a panic and realized that what lay outside the door was not a wilderness, but a chaotic abyss. Thick black mist slowly swirled in the abyss, forming countless vortices of varying sizes. In the center of each vortex, countless faceless figures struggled to emerge.
They waved their pale arms and called out with sinister grins, "You've come."
Six digital figures crawled out of the abyss, covered in black liquid, and kept approaching the two: "Come on."
In the lobby, the time on the electronic wall clock jumped rapidly, finally settling at 23:50.
The gatekeeper's corpse swayed as it stood up, making a sickening, grinding sound. It stretched out its rapidly turning skeletal hand towards the two men, its jaw opening and closing: "Don't go."
"Holy crap, this is terrible." Xiao Cheng pulled his leg back with lingering fear and slammed the door shut. But it was no use; the digital figures passed through the steel door smoothly, like ghosts.
"What are you waiting for? Run!" Fang He immediately grabbed Xiao Cheng, kicked the slow-moving security guard to the ground, and turned to run towards the stairwell.
The gatekeeper, having just risen from the dead, hadn't yet gotten used to his new limbs and lay on the ground, struggling for a long time before finally getting up. The digital human was clearly much more agile and dangerous, following closely behind the two and nearly tearing Xiao Cheng's clothes several times.
"Where are you going?" Brother Number 7 asked in a very calm tone, as if he were just having a casual chat.
"Stop chasing me, brother. Let's just be together forever, brother." Xiao Cheng felt the cool wind whistling behind him and was almost crying. His heart was pounding in his chest, and he was asserting his presence like never before.
Fang He was also a little out of breath. The large iron gate that had been forcibly demolished was now an obstacle, and the broken iron railings were rolling down the stairs. If one was not careful, one would trip and fall.
The digital beings continued their relentless pursuit, emitting inhuman roars, and were only one or two steps away. The increasingly agile gatekeepers also caught up, their sharp finger bones capable of piercing holes in the iron bars.
"Are we going to the top floor?" Xiao Cheng asked breathlessly, her words slurred.
"The rooftop," Fang He said succinctly.
Time was of the essence, and they had finally reached the sixth floor. Fang He shifted his feet, kicked up an iron bar, and caught it steadily. Xiao Cheng was pushed by him and stumbled two steps towards room 608.
"Climb through the window!" Fang He didn't have time to explain much. He picked up the iron bar and hit Number 7 hard on the head, knocking it into a daze. Together with the digital figures behind it, they blocked the stairs.
Xiao Cheng was briefly moved as she watched his reliable figure blocking the stairwell, a man who could hold off ten thousand men. Then she turned and ran towards room 608, entering, opening the window, and climbing out in one smooth motion.
The distance from the sixth floor to the rooftop is not far. Under the life-or-death crisis, Xiao Cheng even unleashed amazing physical strength and performed a smooth and beautiful somersault.
The rooftop was empty and quiet. She lay there sprawled out, panting heavily.
Through the ceiling, the sounds of fighting could be heard coming from room 608, followed by the sound of windowpanes shattering. Fang He'a carefully climbed to the edge of the roof, but his hand slipped and he almost fell.
