Chapter 21

Shi Mingyue couldn't help but look at the person who came. It was a pretty girl in pink clothes. Her eyebrows and eyes were quite similar to Lu Lingyan. She must be his sister.

The girl's name was Lu Lingjing, and she was indeed Lu Lingyan's biological sister. When she walked in, she found Shi Mingyue standing next to Fu Yueli. She suddenly realized that her cousin was married, and this woman was her sister-in-law.

"Jingjing, your cousin can see again!" The old lady called her over happily.

Lu Lingjing walked over and said in surprise, "Cousin, can you really see it?"

"Yes, you are wearing pink clothes and a small yellow flower in your hair, right?" Fu Yueli said with a smile.

Lu Lingjing had dressed up carefully because she heard that her cousin was coming back. Even if Fu Yueli couldn't see, she wanted to greet him in the best possible manner. "Great!"

"Lingjing, this is your cousin's wife." Fu Yueli introduced Shi Mingyue to Lu Lingjing. The joy in Lu Lingjing's eyes suddenly dimmed, but she still forced a smile and called out to Shi Mingyue, "Cousin's wife."

Lu Lingyan saw all of this and thought to himself that his sister must be feeling bad. He had watched Lu Lingjing grow up. Lu Lingjing had liked Fu Yueli since she was a child. He could also see that Fu Yueli had no romantic feelings for her and only treated her as a sister. Lu Lingyan thought it would be best to find a good husband for his sister as soon as possible.

Shi Mingyue, always sensitive, also noticed the girl's vague feelings for Fu Yueli. Her first thought was that in his previous life, Fu Yueli was lucky to have such a girl in love with him. She smiled kindly at Lu Lingjing and said, "Hello, what's your name?"

Lu Lingjing replied: "Lu Lingjing, Ling as in Reiki, Jing as in Jingshu."

"My surname is Shi, and my given name is Mingyue, the bright moon in the sky." Shi Mingyue said with a smile.

Lu Lingjing suddenly felt that her cousin-in-law was easy to get along with, so she took the initiative to say, "Since this is your first time here, I'll take you around the mansion."

"That's good. You are of similar age and have something to talk about. But Lingjing, where is your father?" Lu Lingyan asked.

Lu Lingjing said, "Dad went to the bookstore early this morning and should be back soon." After that, she pulled Shi Mingyue out.

Although the Lu Mansion is not big, being small has its advantages. The pavilions and towers are exquisite and elegant, and the flowers and plants are distributed appropriately.

Shi Mingyue had just asked Lu Lingjing about her age, and she was two months younger than she was now. Shi Mingyue had died at the age of twenty-six in her previous life, so her mental age couldn't be sixteen. So, she treated Lu Lingjing like a younger sister.

The two of them gradually walked to a quiet place, and Lu Lingjing said, "This is the courtyard where I live."

Shi Mingyue followed her inside for a walk. Though the courtyard was small, it was full of interesting things to see. Green creepers covered the walls, and there was a swing not far away. The two continued to tour the mansion and came to Fu Yueli's small courtyard. Several servants were coming in and out to clean it.

"This is where my cousin lived when he was a child. But later on, my father bought a separate courtyard and let my brother and cousin live in it together. He said he would find a teacher to teach them their lessons, and it would be quieter in the separate courtyard." Lu Lingjing explained to her.

Shi Mingyue thought that Fu Yueli would have to hide the matter from her grandparents and Lu Lingjing at that time, so it would be much more convenient if she moved out.

After touring all the places in the Lu Mansion, the two of them returned to the lobby. Lu Shulin, the head of the Lu Mansion, also returned. Lu Shulin was thirty-six years old this year, but he still looked young and handsome, and he looked like a very stable person.

After the dinner, Shi Mingyue followed Fu Yueli back to his residence. It was a very simply decorated room, not very large, and could be seen at a glance.

"You've been traveling hard these past two days. Go to bed early tonight." Fu Yueli sat down and poured a glass of water for Shi Mingyue and himself.

Shi Mingyue took the water he poured and said with a smile, "How interesting! You lived in my childhood room, and I lived in your childhood room."

Fu Yueli also laughed: "Isn't it fate?"

Shi Mingyue was drinking water when she suddenly remembered something. Lu Lingyan had exaggerated Fu Yueli's paintings. She asked curiously, "Is your painting here? I want to see it."

"If the servants haven't moved my cabinet, then they're there, but there are only a few. The rest are in the villa. After my eyes recovered at the age of thirteen, I moved to the villa with Ling Yan." Fu Yueli said as he stood up and walked to the desk and opened the drawer. Fortunately, his paintings were still there.

There were two scrolls in total. The first, opened to what Lu Lingyan described as an imitation of Zhao Ji's "Auspicious Cranes," was indeed a stark departure from the original. In the original, eighteen cranes, each with its own distinct demeanor, circled above the majestic palace, with two more alighting on the palace's two towering chiwen (chiwen) towers. This scene was considered a sign of good fortune, earning the painting its name. However, Fu Yueli's painting was eerie and strange. The original sky's azure blue had been replaced with a dull, oppressive gray-yellow. Black cranes, with white lacquer eyes, circled above the eerie palace. Lu Lingyan's playful reference to them as crows was, indeed, accurate.

The atmosphere of the painting was a stark contrast to the auspicious imagery of the original. Shi Mingyue was deeply shocked and said after a long pause, "Emperor Huizong believed the celestial bird's auspicious omen foreshadowed the prosperity of his country. He never expected the Jingkang Incident to occur fourteen years later, leading to the demise of his country. You painted this painting to allude to the Jingkang Humiliation, right?"

Fu Yueli nodded slightly: "You can understand me. I happened to be reading the History of Song Dynasty at that time, and I was sad and angry. Let's not talk about it. Look at the next picture."

The next painting depicts a red fox. It's not a novel depiction, but a remarkably realistic one. A beautiful red fox comes to life, set against a lush forest backdrop. Could this be the fox that healed Fu Yueli's eyes?

"This is the red fox from before, but I only saw it that once."

Shi Mingyue was puzzled: "Actually, I've always wondered why the red fox would lick your eyes."

Fu Yueli's expression suddenly grew serious. "The red fox is incredibly human-like. After I fell into the trap, it jumped down and directly pulled the cloth covering my eyes. I was so terrified I couldn't move. The red fox's paws pressed against my chest, and it lowered its head to lick my closed eyelids. Only then did I realize I had found the red fox. After it licked my eyes, I sensed light, and the scene before me became increasingly clear."

Shi Mingyue believed his words without a doubt. If even such a bizarre thing as rebirth could happen, then it was not impossible for the red fox to cure his eyes.

“This painting should be well preserved.”

Fu Yueli nodded and put the two paintings away.

At this moment, someone knocked on the door. Shi Mingyue hurried to open the door, and the familiar smell of medicine hit her face.

"Miss, it's time to take your medicine!" Hongyin came in with the medicine.

Shi Mingyue was helpless. She had stopped taking the medicine a few days ago because she was traveling, and now she had to start taking it again. During the seven days that Fu Yueli treated her, he also specifically instructed Hongyin to remember to boil the medicine every day, so she never stopped taking the medicine.

Fu Yueli put the painting away and said with a smile, "Now that the medicine is here, Mingyue, come and drink it."

Hongyin left tactfully. Shi Mingyue sat down with a bitter face. She always had to go through a mental struggle before taking the medicine. It was too bitter. She picked up the medicine bowl, held her breath, and drank it in big gulps.

Just like before, Fu Yueli stuffed a piece of osmanthus candy into her mouth. The sweetness overwhelmed the bitterness, and her heart also felt sweet.
