Chapter 5 The Pope's Daily Life

After praying all morning and having a simple lunch, Lucein Wilder said in the afternoon that two city lords would be visiting. He rested for a while and then went to his study.

Unexpectedly, the two city lords were already waiting there.

These two city lords were the city lords of North City and Gaza City, respectively, within the territory of the Church of Destiny. Both were around forty years old; one had a kind face, while the other was somewhat imposing.

"Your Holiness, are you feeling better?" asked the city lord of North City.

“He’s out of danger.” Phil Gray then asked, “Did the two city lords come here for some business?”

"We came to visit you, and I have already given the gifts to your knight. We also came to discuss the aftermath of the divine descent ceremony," Lord North replied.

“Thank you both. I regret what happened that day, but as believers in the god of fate, we should believe that everything that happens is ordained by fate, and we can only go with the flow.” Phil Gray tried his best to come up with the words a devout believer should say.

I secretly gave myself a thumbs up.

The two city lords nodded, and the Gaza city lord spoke up, "Yes, but now those apostates are using this incident to continue to spread the message that our gods have abandoned us and to smear our Holy See. Some people have been misled by them and joined the apostates. These days they are causing a great disturbance in many districts and disrupting normal order."

“Okay, I understand. You should first try to appease the people and offer them some appropriate favors. As for the apostates, continue to investigate them thoroughly, and try them in public once they are caught.” Phil Gray thought for a moment and offered his suggestions.

In fact, he somewhat agreed with some of the statements made by those apostates.

For example, destiny is in your own hands, not in the hands of a god of destiny.

He still preferred his original materialistic world, a world where he could anger the gods at any time for unknown reasons and bring disaster upon himself.

However, as the Pope of the Church of Destiny, he can only act in accordance with his identity and position.

After all, there's a saying in the original world: "Your position determines your perspective."

After the two city lords left, Lucewyn Wilde said that Bishop Wendell was waiting outside the door, as if he had something to say.

Phil Gray thought about it carefully, and it seemed that Bishop Wendell was the better-tempered bishop that the two servants had mentioned.

"Okay, let him in."

"yes."

He stared into thought as Luce Wilder walked away.

Phil Gray always felt that Luce Wilder was a bit strange, not only because he might know his identity, but also because he always wore his black mask. Especially these past few days, seeing his mask always gave him a vague sense of unease.

Perhaps it's because I subconsciously believe that he might expose me that I have this feeling.

Phil Gray is not considering this matter for the time being.

Bishop Wendell entered; he was a very kind old man, and judging from his appearance, he was indeed easy to like.

“Your Holiness, I have been dealing with the Descent of God ceremony these past few days. The nobles and common people who came to attend the ceremony expressed their concern for you and hoped that you would be in good health. Meanwhile, some apostates have been spreading rumors and inciting unrest. There have been quite a few of these issues, which is why I was able to come and visit you today.” Wendell looked at him apologetically.

“It’s alright, thank you for your trouble,” Phil Gray replied. “I also heard about the apostates from the previous two city lords.”

“They are inciting the public and creating trouble. I even suspect that they might be behind your poisoning,” Wendell said worriedly.

"Then we have no way of knowing, but we believe that the god of fate will guide us."

“Your Holiness, I think it is more important for us now to let believers feel the blessings of God and the mercy of the Papacy.”

It's about winning people's hearts.

Phil Gray thought.

"What are the bishop's thoughts?"

“Winter is just around the corner, and some poor believers may freeze to death this winter. Our Vatican has a relatively large reserve of white stones, which can be distributed to these believers free of charge,” said Bishop Wendell.

White Stone? Phil Gray was hearing about this for the first time; it sounded like something to keep warm.

"Then let the bishop make the arrangements."

Wendell nodded. "However, you may need to be there in person to show your care and love for the believers."

“Sure.” Indeed, the motivational effect would be doubled if the Pope were there. Phil Gray didn’t have anything else to do anyway, so it would be good for him to go and see.
