Chapter 9 The Exiled Pope

"Damn it! Where did you teleport the Pope?" Valcke Dodd cursed angrily.

He raised his greatsword and slashed at Wilder's body in a fit of rage, but Wilder not only did not dodge but instead met the attack head-on, and strangely, no blood flowed out.

Valcke Dodd was somewhat surprised.

Wilder stared intently at him. "I'll remember you!"

His body fell to the ground, and the moment it touched the earth, he turned into a decaying corpse.

No matter how much Valcke Dodd hacked at the rotting corpse, there was no reaction.

"Dead?" Valk Dodd narrowed his eyes. The Death God's passage of the Church of the Dead does indeed require the sacrifice of a life to activate, but those who worship the God of Death may have other means of resurrection.

Thinking of this, he summoned several knights and ordered them to "bring his body back to the Papacy."

"yes!"

Phil Gray's consciousness blurred for a moment, and when it returned, he was surrounded by darkness.

He felt that the magic circle was very cold, not like the kind of cold in the physical sense.

Rather, it's a cold that penetrates to the bone marrow and permeates the soul.

Is this the aura of death?

Phil Gray wondered if Wilder could escape, and what his last words, "life is the only means to save me," meant—was he trying to save himself...?

Before Phil Gray could think any further, his consciousness blurred again, and he fell into a coma.

"Listen to the whispers of fate..."

"Listen to the teachings of the deceased..."

"Listen to the whispers of fate..."

Two different voices clashed in his mind, throwing him into a state of confusion, until finally the deep, sinister voice grew weaker and weaker, leaving only one sentence echoing endlessly in his mind.

"Listen to the whispers of fate..."

The words grew brighter and brighter, making his head buzz.

"Okay, okay, I'll listen!"

He sat up abruptly and found a large face staring at him.

He still had a simple, honest smile on his face.

But it startled him.

“Ah, who are you?” Phil Gray asked.

He looked around again. It was a small room, barely big enough to fit the bed he was lying on and the chair the person in front of him was sitting in.

The house was somewhat dilapidated, and the lighting was dim. You could see something that looked like a candle standing in the corner, emitting a faint light.

Having grown accustomed to the Vatican's luxurious palaces, he felt somewhat out of place.

"Hello, nice to meet you, my name is Barry!" Barry grinned and reached out to shake his hand.

“Ah, hello, my name is…” Phil Gray paused, he couldn’t reveal his real name.

After thinking for a moment, he said, "My name is Kane."

I'm sorry, my dear manservant, but I'll borrow your name.

“Hi Kane, how old are you?” Barry asked again.

But why does this tone sound a bit childish? Like a little kid.

Phil Gray looked at him with a puzzled expression.

"twenty three."

"Okay, okay, Barry is 20 this year. Can Barry call you brother?"

Is he an idiot?

Before Phil Gray could answer, an old woman's voice called out, "Barry, stop fooling around, please come over here, I have something to say."

“Okay.” Barry nodded, looking aggrieved.

It turned out that this room was connected to another room. Pushing open the door, we entered a slightly larger room. On the east side of the room was a stove and a dilapidated cabinet, while on the west side was a bed with an old woman sitting on it.

The old woman smiled kindly. "My son suffered a head injury when he was young, and he's a little slow-witted. Please don't mind him."

"Ah, it's nothing, it's nothing. Where am I? How did I get here?"

“My silly son went out for a stroll and happened to see you lying at my door, so he carried you back. Judging from your clothes and manners, you must be a nobleman, right?”

“Hmm.” Phil Gray looked at his attire: the Pope’s magnificent robes and a silver jeweled crown.

That's way too conspicuous.

“I was originally a very prominent nobleman, but I was betrayed by other members of my family, and they also swallowed up my family property. Now I am penniless and homeless. In despair, I wandered around aimlessly. In the end, I don’t even know where I ended up. I collapsed from exhaustion.”

Phil Gray said sadly that he had concealed part of the truth about himself.

The old woman sighed.

“What a pitiful child! This is the lower district of Kao City, which is what you nobles call the slums.”

Kao City?

The headquarters of the Holy See, which is also where he resides, is in North City, while this city of Kao is a city far away from North City. Although it is also within the diocese of the Church of Destiny, this city is close to the boundary of the diocese.

Wilder's teleportation was amazing.

However, the bishops and knights now control the Papacy, and if they use the Papacy's power, it's only a matter of time before they find him.

However, the issues that need to be addressed now are hiding and housing.

“I have nowhere to go right now. I wonder if you could take me in for a while?” Phil Gray asked sincerely.

He was unfamiliar with this place and had no choice but to rely on these two kind-hearted people.

“No problem.” The old woman smiled. “It’s just that my place is too poor, and I’m afraid you won’t be used to it.”

“It’s alright, thank you for your kindness!” Phil Gray said gratefully.

"Great! If you stay at my house, I can play with you!" Barry clapped happily from the side.

Phil Gray looked at his clothes, which seemed out of place in the room, and asked, "Do you have any spare clothes? I'm too conspicuous in this outfit."

“Yes, Barry, go and get the clothes I sewed for you a few days ago. My lower body is paralyzed, I can’t move, and I can only rely on my mentally challenged son.” After instructing her mentally challenged son, the old woman explained to Phil Gray.

Barry nodded and took a brown coarse cloth shirt from under the bed in the inner room.

"Here you go, Kane, Barry brought you some new clothes!"

Phil Gray almost didn't realize it, then remembered that Kane was indeed his alias.

Thank you.

One is paralyzed, and the other has an intellectual disability.

Yet they took him in as a stranger and gave him clothes that were extremely valuable to the poor. Phil Gray was moved by the kindness of the mother and son.

He went into the inner room and changed into coarse cloth clothes. He put away the luxurious clothes and stuffed them under the bed. He planned to burn them tomorrow. The Pope's clothes could not be exposed.

As for that crown, we'll have to find an opportunity to bury it somewhere else, and then have someone dig it up when we return to the Vatican.

He lived in the inner room, while Barry lived with his mother in the outer room, where they made a bed out of planks.

By the time everything was finally settled, it was almost dawn. After a day of ups and downs, Phil Gray lay exhausted on his bed and quickly fell asleep.
