"A roar?"
The group held their breath and listened carefully, and sure enough, they heard several faint roars.
They were walking out of the church's back door, heading back to their lodgings to rest. There was a long corridor leading to the church's backyard, where the clergy of Dawn lived, and there were also guest rooms for worshippers who came to the church to pray.
The roar came from the backyard.
"What's going on?" Phil Gray and his group rushed toward the direction of the roar, only to be met with a horrifying scene.
A priest in a golden robe was kneeling on the ground, gnawing on the neck of another priest. Blood flowed onto the ground, accompanied by the sound of bones being chewed.
"My God!" Phil Gray stopped in his tracks. This scene was exactly like the zombie movies he had seen on Earth. Could there be zombies in this other world?
The bitten priest's eyes bulged, and he trembled all over. Then he got up from the ground, tilted his head, and followed the priest who had just bitten him. They saw Phil Gray and his group walking over and rushed towards them frantically.
Ernest stood in front of them. As a highly skilled Fate Knight, dealing with these zombies was effortless for him, but he frowned. "These zombies have retained their divine power from when they were alive."
“Divine power?” Phil Gray asked in surprise. “Can these zombies still use divine power? But those below the divine level cannot retain their original divine power after death, and these priests are at most at the level of invocation.”
He saw Ernest wield his sword of destiny, cleaving the onrushing zombie in two, but the zombie did not stop attacking; its body continued to writhe, trying to reassemble itself.
“No, they don’t seem to be able to use divine power on their own, but their bodies still retain the power bestowed upon them by the gods, which makes them stronger and more resilient than ordinary zombies,” Ernest replied.
“This is clearly impossible. I’ve never heard of a low-level chosen one retaining divine power after death.” Eli was also full of doubts. Two more zombies pounced from behind them. A faint golden layer appeared on their bodies, which convinced him that these zombies still had divine power within them.
"Wait, if it's true that divine power cannot be retained after death, does that mean these people didn't actually die?" Phil Gray asked suddenly.
“Very likely.” Eli agreed with this guess.
Phil Gray's divine power coalesced at his fingertips, "Burning—"
A ring of fire appeared on the spot, surrounding the two intact zombies. They instinctively avoided the sun's flames and were trapped inside the ring.
Is there any way to restore them? After all, these people might still be alive?
So Phil Gray didn't kill him.
“There are even more howls coming from inside,” Ernest said.
“Let’s go in and take a look.” Phil Gray walked ahead, and they headed deeper into the backyard.
Sure enough, there were too many zombies inside. They were gnawing at each other, and a large group of zombies surrounded Melody.
"Damn zombies!" Melody held a golden bow and arrow, continuously firing arrows formed from divine power.
But there were too many zombies, and they were all extremely ferocious; she could barely hold on.
Upon seeing their arrival, Melody cried out in a panic, "Your Highness, please save me!"
Eli kicked away the zombie that was about to bite him and planted a patch of cacti next to Melody, forming a barrier to stop the zombies from closing in.
Phil Gray cannot use the abilities of other gods; he can only continuously unleash flames to keep the zombies away.
Ernest was the main fighting force, defeating one zombie after another that crossed the obstacles.
Their help relieved Melody, but just then, another person appeared in the backyard and rushed over anxiously.
"Your Highness, are you alright? It seems the church has been completely destroyed; most of the priests I know have turned into zombies!"
Phil Gray looked at the person who had come and saw that it was Reverend Hodgson. They had just been having dinner together, and after dinner, the three of them wanted to take a walk outside, so they parted ways.
At this moment, Reverend Hodgson suffered a severe blow. His already wrinkled face aged even more, because the zombies were all pastors who had lived with him for many years.
"How could it spread so quickly? By the way, what about the homeless man we found at the Ruins of Life today? Where is he?" Phil Gray's eyes showed worry; that man was indeed very suspicious.
"Him? He should have been put in a guest room. I think he's over there. Should we go and take a look?" Hodgson said, suppressing his sadness, pointing to a room on the far east side.
"Okay." They nodded and ran towards the man's residence while dealing with the zombies.
I pushed open the door, and there was no one inside.
“It seems he’s involved,” Eli said.
"Oh no! If these zombies leave the church and spread into the city, then..." Phil Gray pursed his lips. At this rate of spread, the entire city would become a zombie city!
After all, even the church pastor has turned into a zombie, so ordinary people have no way to resist.
"Oh dear, the bishop and the city lord are both not here, what should we do?!" Pastor Hodgson looked distressed, at a loss for what to do.
Melody's blonde hair was stained with blood, and her expression was grave: "We will report to headquarters as soon as possible and ask them or the chosen ones from the surrounding cities to come and provide support."
After saying that, she took off one of her earrings, channeled her divine power into it, and the earring instantly turned into a streak of light that flew towards the sky and disappeared.
"Hopefully His Holiness the Pope will receive this, so he will know that we are in danger."
“But their arrival will take time. This is a brilliant diversionary tactic…” Phil Gray thought to himself. He then said to the others, “We need to keep these zombies inside the church as much as possible. Now, let’s see how many have escaped outside!”
"Um!"
When they arrived at the church entrance, they found that the situation was far more serious than they had imagined, because outside the church, screams and roars were even louder than inside!
“It’s over there, that’s a residential area!” Hodgson’s eyes were red, and his voice was loudest in the place where he often went to help. He had prayed for the sick and baptized newborn babies there. He had lived in this city for decades. How could his peaceful days turn into this overnight?
He crouched down in despair, his aged back a sight that was suffocating to behold.
They stood bewildered under the night sky, seeing dismembered limbs and entrails on the street.
Then another voice came from behind:
"Cough cough, there are still living people?"
