Chapter 146 Waiting for the Thief While Fishing

They waited for nearly half an hour, watching with utter boredom as another young priest helped other chosen ones receive their tasks.

The missions were bizarre and the rewards were not great. They suddenly realized that although the missions they had taken on before were always full of unexpected events, the rewards were definitely considerable.

"Oh, it's you lot. Long time no see." The person in charge of the mission hall, an elderly priest named Malken Buckle, finally arrived late and greeted them warmly.

The young pastor who had just left was following behind him, so he should know something about the situation.

Phil Gray spoke up, "Hello, you were the one who said you could trust us with the mission, and we've already completed it, but why does it still show as 'in progress'?"

“Yes, I remember. I just checked with the church. Our church offered 1,000 gold coins for this task. However, the person who posted the task said the target is already dead? Should we give you half of the reward?” Malken asked with a smile.

“No, no, no, the death of the mission target has nothing to do with us. We safely delivered him to the royal palace of the Kingdom of Puna. Who could have predicted that the king would execute him?” Eli retorted.

“Yes, the mission was all agreed upon from the beginning. We would receive our reward once he was safely delivered to his destination. We encountered many dangers along the way, and we all did our best to protect our target. As for what happens to him when we arrive at our destination, that’s none of our business,” Phil Gray said sincerely.

“This…” Malken hesitated, and Phil Gray continued, “If we halve the reward for each task taker every time for various reasons, how can other chosen ones feel comfortable accepting tasks in the future?”

Eli turned his gaze to the chosen ones who were selecting tasks before the Mirror of Life, as if he were about to go over and talk to them about the Church of Life's failure to pay the agreed-upon reward if Malken didn't agree.

"Alright, go collect your payment." With a sigh, Malken took out a stamp from under the table and stamped the document with the words "Completed."

“Praise life, and we will be more proactive in taking on more tasks!” Eli smiled as he took the bag.

The group seemed quite pleased, having initially thought the pastor wouldn't be so easy to talk to.

Malken looked at them, a sly glint in his eyes. “You did very well. It was you who wrote to the church to expose the conspiracy of the target. The elders who returned praised you highly. Actually, I was just about to say that although the mission reward was halved, I could give you an additional 500 gold coins as a bonus. In short, you can receive 1,000 gold coins.”

"Huh?" Phil Gray and Eli's faces fell. What was the point of all that rambling on?

"Alright, I look forward to your next mission. May the God of Life be with you." Malken smiled and nodded at them before going to attend to other matters.

"This guy is deliberately trying to ruin our success." Eli shook his head, but they were already quite satisfied with getting 1,000 gold coins.

As they walked out of the church, Ron greeted them, "How did it go? Did you finish your business?"

“Hmm.” Phil Gray had already placed the gold coins into the Death Stone. Since mastering the true method of using the stone and infusing it with his soul power, the space inside had become increasingly spacious, allowing him to put more things in it.

He plans to stock up on more things this time, just in case.

“I’ve called a carriage. Come with me to my place. I’ve also invited you to dinner. My wife’s cooking is excellent.” Ron waved to the carriage by the roadside, and the carriage drove towards them.

Two horses pulled the two-story carriage, and in front of it was a dark-skinned, extremely robust-looking coachman.

“Okay, no problem.” Phil Gray nodded, and the other companions boarded the carriage one by one.

They followed Ron to the warehouse he had mentioned.

Ron's home was far from the city center; it was a two-story building, and behind the building was this large warehouse.

Ron's wife was a native of Dur City. She looked very young and breathed in the air full of life. She and her three-year-old son both had rosy complexions and were very healthy.

“Praise life, thank you for coming to help us.” She prepared a large table of dishes and warmly entertained Phil Gray and the others.

"Thanks!"

However, after only half of the meal was eaten, someone came over and told Ron that their fish had arrived and needed to be put into the warehouse immediately.

“Let’s go quickly.” Phil Gray put down his knife and fork. Ron’s wife had packed the remaining food into a box for them to take to the warehouse to eat.

Upon entering the secret room in the warehouse, a chill swept over me; the temperature inside must have been below zero.

However, Phil Gray and his companions were all chosen by the gods, and by channeling their divine power, their bodies quickly warmed up.

Ron placed the iron box containing the fireblood fish on the table in the middle of the secret room, and then put a thick cotton coat on the wooden bed next to it.

The wooden bed is new; it must have been temporarily moved here to guard the fish.

"I'll bring you another small stove," Ron said, and soon a layer of frost appeared on his eyebrows, making him shiver.

“No need, none of us need it. You can leave, we can just watch,” Phil Gray advised.

"Alright, I trust you all. I was just worried you'd be cold." Ron was extremely grateful, then pushed open the door and left. But according to his senses, he hadn't gone far; he slept in the outer warehouse.

Feeling incredibly bored waiting in the secret room, Eli looked at the iron box. The box wasn't locked; it was simply covered. Inside were ice blocks, and in the middle of the ice blocks was a fire-blooded fish.

The fish was dead, but Eli could feel the heat emanating from it, and the surrounding ice showed signs of melting.

Phil Gray sensed the presence of the undead in the secret chamber and found no trace of divine power.

What could it be? He frowned.

Two hours later, Ron brought them three thick cloaks. The black cotton cloaks were very warm, and Phil Gray put them on, but he didn't wear hats so as not to obstruct his vision.

Before they knew it, it was already past midnight. Phil Gray's eyes were starting to ache from staring at the fish. Eli yawned, "When will that fish thief come? Will he be too scared to come out when he sees so many of us chosen ones?"

No sooner had he finished speaking than a dark shadow flashed by, and with a snapping sound, the fish inside the metal box vanished without a trace.

Although the shadowy figures were fast, the Chosen Ones were no pushovers either. The three of them chased after the shadowy figures like a gust of wind. Ron in the warehouse only saw the door to the secret room open and several shadowy figures flash by.

They chased after the shadowy figure and jumped to the top of the warehouse, where they could vaguely see the figure's true appearance!
