The imagined pain did not come. Phil Gray saw Wilder's sword flash and the baby was cut down to the ground.
The swaddling clothes covering him had torn open, revealing his deformed, writhing body.
Wilder's sword severed half of his face, but his remaining body writhed on the ground, still trying to crawl toward Phil Gray.
"What kind of monster is this?" Phil Gray jumped onto the table in terror, while Luce Wilder was already locked in combat with the woman.
The woman's face developed wrinkles like toad skin, and her hands transformed into sharp claws, which she swung towards Wilder.
What the hell? Phil Gray remembered that there were escorting knights outside.
He hurriedly shouted, "Help! Someone's trying to assassinate me!"
The knights did indeed enter, more than a dozen of them, but their swords were pointed at themselves.
"What are you doing? I am the Pope!"
Before he could even think about why the knights had turned against him, Phil Gray hurriedly dodged the attacks, but he was no match for the ten well-trained knights on his own.
Just as he was about to be captured, a black bell appeared out of thin air in Luce Wilder's other hand, surrounded by eerie mist.
As the bell rang, white hands burst forth from the ground, followed by dozens of skeletons emerging from the earth to fight the knights.
Phil Gray stared in shock at the scene before him. Although he knew that gods existed in this world, he still thought that the human world should be the same as Earth. He never expected that the people here would have such strange abilities.
Luce Wilder simply abandoned his sword and replaced it with a black staff covered in spikes, swiftly smashing it down on the monstrous woman.
The woman had become a complete monster, constantly spitting green sludge at Wilder, and each time Wilder's staff struck her, she would howl like a demon.
Phil Gray's heart pounded. The tent had been destroyed, but the area was deserted. Those who had collected the supplies had probably already gone home, but there was no sign of Bishop Wendell.
He wanted to leave first, but feared that it would be even more dangerous if he left, so he could only pray that Wilder would deal with the monster soon.
The skeletons, lifeless, charged fearlessly at the knights, their bones clanging as they were struck, leaving no mark even on the swords.
"That's amazing!" Phil Gray exclaimed.
The skeletons quickly dealt with the knight and the wriggling baby, and then went to help Wilder fight the monster woman.
Although the monster woman was terrifying, she seemed to be no match for Wilder. With the help of many skeletons, the woman was quickly defeated.
"Who sent you?" Luce Wilder asked in a deep voice.
The woman continued to scream and struggled to lunge at him.
Finally, Wilder stabbed him in the heart.
Phil Gray finally breathed a sigh of relief. He walked over to Wilder and watched as Wilder rang the bell again, and the skeletons crawled into the ground.
"Thank you, I'm so glad you're here," Phil Gray said sincerely.
“It’s just my job,” Wilder replied.
"What kind of monster is this woman?"
“She is a chosen one of the gods, and should be someone who worships diseases or controls plagues.”
Phil Gray thought for a moment. According to the "Williams World Religions Overview" he had read, disease worship was a church that believed in a god of disease, while plague makers were a group that believed in a god of plague.
But what is a chosen one?
Phil Gray asked the question as well.
Luce Wilder explained, “Those favored by the gods are people who can utilize certain abilities of the gods. They are divided into seven levels according to the degree of divine favor: listening, blessing, gazing, divine revelation, divine descent, divine way, and quasi-god.”
The first three levels still belong to the realm of mortals. Listening means that those favored by God can hear the divine's words of wisdom. Praying means that one can pray to God about one's requests. Paying attention means that God's gaze will linger on you.
The next four levels transcend the limitations of mortals: divine revelation means that the gods will respond to your requests; divine descent means that you can invite the gods to descend into your body; the divine path means that you can use the power of faith like the gods; and quasi-god means that you have the qualifications to become a god and have mastered some of the power of the laws.
Once you reach the level of a god or quasi-god, there will be no lifespan limit. That woman was probably at the blessing level.
This must be the extraordinary system of this world.
Phil Gray's eyes lit up.
"Then how can one become a chosen one of the gods?"
Luce Wilder glanced at him and laughed, “Whether one can become a chosen one is predetermined at birth. Your Majesty has indeed forgotten that you are the first pope in the history of the Church of Destiny who is not a chosen one. This matter once caused dissatisfaction among many people. It was only through the efforts of the former pope and the Grey family that you were able to become pope.”
Phil Gray felt embarrassed, as if his heart was broken. He didn't know if he, like the original owner of this body, was not qualified to become a chosen one of the gods.
Wilder continued, “To become a chosen one of the gods, one must be devout enough to the gods and constantly pray to them. During prayer, one may have the opportunity to hear the gods’ words of wisdom. By following the instructions of the words of wisdom and completing the corresponding tasks, one can obtain a power of the gods, and one’s soul will be strengthened, thus advancing to a higher level.”
“Every church has many chosen ones, because it is easy to become a priest in the church, but the positions of bishop and above must be held by chosen ones, and the positions of cardinal must be held by people of divine revelation or above.”
Phil Gray suddenly remembered the phrase he had heard a few days ago in a half-dream state: "Listen to the whispers of fate." Could it be that he wasn't dreaming, but rather receiving divine advice?
He felt a surge of excitement, but he didn't show it. Instead, he asked with a smile, "You're definitely not a chosen one of the Church of Destiny, are you?"
Although he didn't know much, the abilities of the chosen ones of the Church of Destiny shouldn't be summoning skeletons.
Luce Wilder chuckled, “You’re quite clever. I’m a member of the Church of the Dead, and my god is the god of death, Veno. But now is not the time to talk about that. It’s more important for us to get back to the Holy See.” Then his expression turned serious. “It seems someone is coming.”
He and Phil Gray became a shadow.
Phil Gray marveled at his skill, and then saw that the people who had arrived were Bishop Wendell and Knight Commander Valck Dodd.
He was about to go up and say hello, but suddenly stopped himself, because he thought of those rebellious knights.
Turning around, he noticed that Luce Wilder was also staring intently at the two men.
As they drew closer, they could hear the two of them talking.
"They're all dead? Your knights can't even catch an ordinary person?" Wendell's voice.
"Didn't you say that the plague-controllers you hired have never failed? A plague-controller at the Blessing level can't even kill an ordinary person?" came the voice of Knight Commander Valk Dodd.
hateful!
Phil Gray gritted his teeth; these two guys had betrayed him.
