Jiang Yufan felt that Gu Sidu was really strange. He spoke without thinking, saying whatever came to mind, saying things he shouldn't have said, and turning any matter into a strange and complicated situation, which was really baffling.
Jiang Yufan thought about it for a while and then said to Daoyun, "Is there something wrong with Gu Sidu's head?"
"Amitabha, Buddha, you should be more careful with your words. You must not use such vulgar language." Daoyun clasped his hands together, praying for Jiang Yufan's earlier falsehoods.
Before Jiang Yufan could finish her rant about Gu Sidu, the character she was referring to appeared at her door.
Jiang Yufan didn't know how Gu Sidu got home last night, nor did she need to worry about it. This was Gu Sidu's home; surely he wouldn't get lost. It was just that Gu Sidu had come to bother her far too early today.
Gu Sidu brought vegetarian food with him, and he wanted to have a vegetarian meal with Jiang Yufan.
Jiang Yufan couldn't refuse, otherwise she wouldn't get the vegetarian meal, and she couldn't let herself go hungry, so she sat down opposite Gu Sidu: "You don't need to go to roll call today?"
“Knowing that the Bodhisattva would be chanting sutras early during the Qingming Festival, I came early. I will finish my vegetarian meal with you, and I will go to check in while you go to chant sutras, so it won’t be delayed.”
Gu Sidu carefully observed and remembered all of this.
Jiang Yufan knew that Gu Sidu wouldn't come on his own initiative, so she didn't refuse: "Speak, what do you want to see me about today? If you're talking about how I kicked you out last night, I won't apologize."
"I don't remember what happened last night. What kind of person is the Bodhisattva? How could I dare to be angry with the Bodhisattva?"
With her smooth talk, Jiang Yufan didn't press Gu Sidu about whether or not to call her "Bodhisattva." Gu Sidu was unlikely to change her mind, so she would just let Gu Sidu call her whatever she wanted. Every time Gu Sidu called her "Bodhisattva," she would consider it as reciting a scripture and accumulating merit.
Gu Sidu didn't come for the vegetarian meal. He watched Jiang Yufan set out her chopsticks and eat. Just looking at this woman with the face of Guanyin filled him with joy. He didn't even need to eat. Last night, he heard about this Bodhisattva, which moved him even more and filled him with compassion. He didn't want Jiang Yufan to return to Chenxiang Temple. He wouldn't let go, but he still had worries.
“Last night, the Bodhisattva said that you were tricked into going to Chenxiang Temple. Chenxiang Temple has been able to continue its incense offerings because of a true Bodhisattva. Now that you have left, what will become of Chenxiang Temple? Isn’t that a loss?”
“The abbot told me that there is a Guanyin statue in Chenxiang Temple for people to pray to. He would say that he has gone on a pilgrimage to save the world, and people can make wishes. The Bodhisattva will bless them. In fact, whether mortals’ wishes can be fulfilled is not up to me, but up to the other people in the temple. As long as it does not affect the incense offerings, they will naturally let people go.”
Gods and Buddhas reside in one's heart, not in any particular place. The fact that Jiang Yufan doesn't go back makes it even more believable.
Gu Sidu dispelled his doubts and felt relieved. At this moment, he became bolder and stared at Jiang Yufan. But that wasn't enough. Gu Sidu also cupped his cheeks in his hands and looked at Jiang Yufan.
Jiang Yufan hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to eat the bite of food she had just picked up, and then shifted her position slightly.
Later, Gu Sidu followed and continued to look at Jiang Yufan in the same way.
This time, Jiang Yufan thought for a moment, then used a different pair of chopsticks to put the food into Gu Sidu's bowl.
Gu Sidu was still looking at her.
Jiang Yufan said that Gu Sidu was crazy, and she was right. She was really suffering. She put down her chopsticks and looked at Gu Sidu: "Are you going to eat or not? If you're not going to eat, then Lord Gu should hurry up and go to report for duty."
"Hehe, I'll eat, I'll eat. This is food that the Bodhisattva picked for me. I'm sure I'll have good luck today." Gu Sidu said this, but he didn't rush to pick up his chopsticks. Instead, he took something out of his pocket.
Unfolding the handkerchief, what was revealed to Jiang Yufan was a gleaming gold hairpin.
A pure gold hairpin, yet plain in appearance, doesn't seem like something a Buddhist would use. That's why Gu Sidu chose an extremely simple hairpin without any design. Gold is precious, shining brightly, and dignified.
“Bodhisattva, please don’t be so quick to refuse. I know you don’t value these things, but this is a small token of my appreciation. Please accept it after you understand the reason.” Gu Sidu presented the hairpin to Daoyun and asked Daoyun to pass it on.
“I hope you can dress yourself up nicely. You are in the prime of your youth. In the Chenxiang Temple, you may have only worn plain clothes and wasted these years. Don’t worry, I have no other intentions. I just think that flowers should bloom in their best years, and I also hope that you will love yourself more first.”
“This is not the Chenxiang Temple. Here, I respect you above all others. You may do whatever you wish.”
After saying this, Gu Sidu got up. It was getting late, and he had to go to check in. He had come so early today for this very matter, and now that he had successfully completed it, he naturally had to take his leave.
Gu Sidu was overjoyed with what she had done and quickened her pace on the way back.
From behind, and from Jiang Yufan's perspective, Gu Sidu seemed to have gone mad.
But they had to wait a bit longer. Jiang Yufan watched as Gu Sidu, who had walked halfway, suddenly turned back. He deliberately put the food that Jiang Yufan had just picked up for him into his mouth, said goodbye again, and then left.
Jiang Yufan was still holding the gold hairpin in her hand.
“What a strange person. Daoyun, can you tell what he’s trying to do?” Jiang Yufan asked.
"I think it's Lord Gu who wants to pursue you."
What?
Upon hearing this, Jiang Yufan coughed violently. What pursuit? She looked at Daoyun.
"Guan Guan cry the ospreys, on the islet in the river. Do you know what the next few lines mean, Buddha?" Daoyun recited the poem first, deliberately keeping it a riddle for Jiang Yufan.
The next two lines are, of course, "A fair maiden is sought after by a gentleman."
Such a pursuit.
Jiang Yufan didn't believe it. She shook her head and said, "You're just talking nonsense. He thinks I'm a true Bodhisattva. Who would have such thoughts about pursuing a Bodhisattva?"
"But he is Gu Sidu!"
"Oh, that makes sense, it's understandable." Jiang Yufan lowered her head and tucked the gold hairpin into her hair bun. Gu Sidu meant well, so she accepted it.
Gu Sidu's words and actions were always unreasonable and unpredictable. While others dutifully reported for duty and went home to pursue their ambitions, Gu Sidu was nowhere to be seen all day. Perhaps the Hanlin Academy was too busy, and the servants were not in a hurry.
But as night deepened and the moon hung high in the sky, Gu Sidu still hadn't returned home.
It was almost midnight, and Jiang Yufan was still half asleep when she heard noises outside. Daoyun seemed to be talking to someone. She got up, put on a robe, and went out. The closer she got, the clearer the sounds became.
She listened as Daoyun said something about it not being their business, and that the Buddhist nun had already gone to sleep.
Having heard her name mentioned, she couldn't stand back and interrupted the argument: "What's wrong? What happened?"
"Buddha, Bodhisattva, please enlighten us! Our master has not yet returned. What should we do?"
"If Gu Sidu hasn't returned, then he hasn't returned. Perhaps the Hanlin Academy is too busy, and he can't handle it all. Maybe he'll be back tomorrow. You should all go to sleep and stop making noise." Jiang Yufan thought it was something serious. Was such a trivial matter worth arguing about in the middle of the night?
"No, Bodhisattva! Please have mercy and save our master! He failed to deliver the gift, and who knows if someone in the Hanlin Academy holds a grudge against him? Do you think he might have been assassinated on his way back?"
"Good heavens! Yesterday, our patriarch was fighting with that dog. Did that dog come at us in the middle of the night and tear our patriarch to pieces?"
Jiang Yufan and Daoyun exchanged glances, and Jiang Yufan decided to listen to them quietly for a while.
She only thought that Gu Sidu had official duties to attend to, but these loyal servants were even worse than she thought; they didn't want anything good for Gu Sidu at all.
And once they started talking, they wouldn't stop, making it impossible for Jiang Yufan to get a word in edgewise. Heavens above, all she wanted was to get some sleep, why couldn't they just leave her alone?
Is it really that hard to get some sleep?
Jiang Yufan even missed the days at Chenxiang Temple.
Never mind, Jiang Yufan leaned against the door and listened quietly to their conversation. Before she knew it, she had fallen asleep. In her half-awake state, she suddenly heard someone calling her name. She opened her eyes abruptly and smiled slightly at the servants who had stopped talking.
"Is there anything else, everyone?" Jiang Yufan was still a little sleepy, but fortunately Daoyun had already come over and quietly helped Jiang Yufan to stand still.
"Please, Bodhisattva, bless our master and grant him great spiritual power."
Well, they haven't forgotten.
There was no other way; Jiang Yufan couldn't refuse, so she had to think of another way.
On a sudden inspiration, Jiang Yufan secretly squeezed Daoyun's hand and said to everyone, "Since that's the case, then I'll give it a try. Daoyun, set up the prayer mat for me. I want to sit quietly and ask the Buddha for help to see if there's any way to resolve this."
"That's wonderful! Thank you, Bodhisattva! We'll wait outside the door for you!"
Dao Yun didn't understand, but he did as he was told, setting up the prayer mat and lighting the incense. Jiang Yu Fan said to Dao Yun, "Sit close to me."
"Buddha, are you really planning to perform spiritual communication for them? Don't let it slip again. These people don't seem any easier to fool than Lord Gu." Dao Yun was very worried.
"Don't worry, just listen to me. Tell the people outside that I am meditating and communicating with the divine, and I cannot be disturbed. I will go to find Gu Sidu, and I will ask the gods and Buddhas to let Gu Sidu return home." Jiang Yufan was not worried. She had already straightened her posture and begun to meditate.
Jiang Yufan had no knowledge of psychic abilities, nor would she attempt them. The servants' worries were unnecessary; Gu Sidu knew the way home and would return on his own. The most important thing right now was for Jiang Yufan to sleep peacefully without being disturbed.
She appeared to be meditating but was actually falling asleep. This method of catching up on sleep, done discreetly, was something Jiang Yufan rarely showed to others, but it was perfect for today. As for the servants, if they wanted to wait outside, so be it; she was going to sleep first.
Dao Yun was initially worried about how Jiang Yu Fan could communicate with the gods and deceive the servants, but she gradually noticed something amiss. Jiang Yu Fan's body, which should have been meditating, began to tilt, and her mouth opened slightly as she leaned against Dao Yun.
So that's what they meant by having Daoyun lean over. But could they fool the servants like this? If Jiang Yufan leaned any further, it would give them away. Daoyun was very worried. She turned her head and secretly looked at the servants waiting at the door. She noticed that the servants were also leaning to one side, and some of them were even sleeping on their backs at the door.
Several others were also rubbing their eyes and yawning.
Everyone was sleepy, and no one questioned it further, so Daoyun felt relieved. She relaxed a little and closed her eyes slightly. Since everyone was asleep, she would keep them company.
Poor Gu Sidu, although it seemed that his family cared about him, they also completely disregarded him.
No one knew when or who suddenly cried out among the sleeping crowd, startling the servants awake, who were unaware of what had happened.
"What's wrong? What happened?"
"Oh my god, the Bodhisattva has appeared! Our patriarch has returned!!"
Dao Yun was also awakened by the sound. She looked outside and saw Gu Sidu lying on the ground. She was shocked and gently patted Jiang Yufan.
"Buddha, wake up."
"Hey, don't bother me. Can't you wait until I'm awake to talk about it?"
"Gu Sidu, he has fainted again."
Jiang Yufan suddenly lost her drowsiness and sat up in surprise, looking outside.
Indeed, who else could it be but the unlucky Gu Sidu lying on the ground outside? This was the second time Gu Sidu had fainted in front of her.
