There was nothing but weeds, and it was a pretty steep slope, looking almost the same as the south slope.
Walking along the edge towards a certain place, the old man stopped when he was almost at the boundary. He pushed aside the weeds on the road ahead and revealed a set of steps. These steps were obviously dug by himself, but they were much gentler, unlike the steep ones from before.
The old man held onto the mountainside and started walking down. Qian Xiao quickly followed, trying to prevent him from falling. At the bottom of the steps was the entrance to a cave, neither too big nor too small, just like many other caves on the mountain.
Without hesitation, the old man went straight in, and Qian Xiao followed closely behind. After walking for a while, the visibility dropped considerably. The old man fumbled around and took out a torch to light, which clearly illuminated the scene inside the cave.
This cave is quite deep. It took the old man a long time to stop and open a door in front of him, gesturing for Qian Xiao to take a look.
Qian Xiao was incredibly curious. It was obvious the cave had been artificially created; the natural cave wouldn't look like this. She stuck her head inside for a peek, and her eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
My goodness, this place is at least a hundred square meters, and you can tell that it was made with care. The walls and floor are paved with stones that were picked up, and there are also shelves that have been set up, with bags full of grain.
I don't know how it was done inside, or maybe it was natural, but it was very dry and perfect for storing food. Seeing so much food money, Xiao felt like an idiot. If she had asked earlier, would she have been spared from going hungry as a child?
"Grandpa, you should have said so earlier! Otherwise, would your granddaughter be as thin as a stick? Grandpa, who else here would know?"
“It’s just our family. Your second and third aunts don’t know about it, but your mother does. Now there’s another one, you. I discovered this place back when the Japanese were fighting. Later, I went out to make my own way in the world, and I didn’t have time to tell your great-grandfather and the others.”
"Not long after we came back, we were liberated. I kept this place a secret. Even the best of brothers have families and we have to be careful. Don't tell anyone. I brought you here today to tell you that we have plenty of food. We can feed two more people, let alone just you."
"I understand, sir. Don't worry, I'll speak up if anything happens in the future, and I won't act on my own anymore."
"Good to know. Come with me."
The old man went into the innermost part of the cave and pointed to a large rock: "Erdan, try to move this big rock."
Qian Xiao looked at her stick-thin arms and then at the millstone-sized rock on the ground, feeling like her grandfather was teasing her. She was strong, but not superhuman; she couldn't possibly move it. But since her grandfather had spoken, she'd give it a try.
To make it look realistic, she really put in all her strength. The old man saw his granddaughter's face turn red and her neck bulge, thinking that if she couldn't move it, he would just give up. But no one expected that Qian Xiao would actually lift the big rock.
He picked him up!
Seriously, Qian Xiao was completely dumbfounded. No, she had tried to move much larger rocks than this before, and she couldn't move them at all. Had she taken some kind of superpower?
Or is the stone hollow?
The old man's pupils dilated in shock when he saw it. He knew that his granddaughter had always been stronger than others since she was a child, but he never expected her to be this strong. Even his eldest son, who was strong enough, had some difficulty lifting this rock, and his face turned red.
But looking at his granddaughter, she seemed quite relaxed. His original intention was just to have her push and move the rock, but who would have thought that his granddaughter would be so bold as to pick up the big rock!
The grandfather and grandson stood there, stunned, staring at each other, seemingly forgetting what they were supposed to do next.
The old man was the first to come to his senses: "Erdan! Isn't it heavy?"
Qian Xiao bounced up and down a couple of times, looking rather silly: "Not bad."
"Hey, be careful, put it aside for now." The old man's heart trembled as he looked at the large rock, mainly because its size was so different from his granddaughter's little arm.
"Okay."
Qian Xiao put down the big rock and saw that there was actually a hole under the rock, just like her own vegetable cellar. It had been blocked by the rock before, so she hadn't seen it.
"Grandpa, is there something hidden in here too?" Is her grandpa a rat? Why is he digging holes everywhere?
"Yeah, let's let it air out a bit before we go in. Erdan, I don't remember you being this strong before?"
Qian Xiao touched his bald head, thinking about how to explain: "Well, I guess I wasn't eating enough before, so I didn't fully utilize my strength. Now that I can eat my fill every day, I'm stronger than before."
She guessed it was probably the effect of the drug. Although it didn't trigger any special abilities, it made her stronger, which was a good thing! At least the pain she endured that night wasn't for nothing.
As they say, strength can overcome skill; as long as she's strong enough, she won't be afraid of encountering bad people.
"Looks like you'll have to eat properly from now on. But this is something we'll keep to ourselves, don't tell anyone else."
This is his granddaughter. She's so strong, people outside don't know how to behave. He loves his own granddaughter and doesn't want to hear those kinds of comments.
Judging that the time was about right, the old man took out a box of matches from his pocket, walked to the entrance of the cave, struck a match and threw it in. The match was still burning when it landed on the ground, proving that it was safe for the person to go down.
A ladder stood by the entrance to the cellar. The old man went down first, followed by Qian Xiao. Once down, Qian Xiao realized that the cellar was quite large, much bigger than his own vegetable cellar, and it was still very dry inside. He wondered how that had been done.
After walking about five meters from the cellar entrance, she was blocked by a series of large boxes. She tilted her head to look behind her and saw that there were also boxes stacked together. Roughly speaking, there were at least thirty or forty large boxes.
"Sir, what are all these? Are they all gold and silver jewelry?" Could it be that their family were high-ranking officials for generations? I've never heard of that. It's said that their family has lived here for generations.
"You also know about gold and silver jewelry?" the old man asked, amused.
"Sir, who are you looking down on? Why can't I know about gold and silver jewelry? Although I've never seen it, I've certainly heard of it. Is all of this our family's? Did we used to be some kind of wealthy family?"
"What nonsense are you talking about? Our family has been farmers for generations. These were all collected by Grandpa. Just leave them here and we'll take them out to use when it's more convenient later."
