Chapter 14: Midnight End

It was already ten o'clock in the evening when the children went to bed.

Qi Mi used a roll of black sticker to cover the glass completely so that it was opaque. The annoying moths then dispersed and stopped flying towards the glass. The room became quiet.

Zheng Yuanyuan was afraid that the children would not be warm enough, so she divided the ten children's beds into two rows, left and right, so that they could sleep feet to feet, and covered the children with a large quilt.

Soon, the children stopped turning over and only their steady breathing could be heard.

Du Rui and Qi Mi went out and carefully cleaned the corridor and toilet, spraying several cans of insecticide in the hope of reducing the number of insects. After tidying up, Du Rui returned to the Douding class to keep Zheng Yuanyuan company, while Qi Mi went to the Yaya class across the street alone, pushing a shopping cart full of waste.

A small iron bucket was burning, and the classroom suddenly became bright.

After a while, Du Rui knocked on the door with a thermos cup filled with hot water.

Qi Mi was sitting on a chair, carefully fiddling with the iron sheet with a soldering pen.

"What are you doing?" Du Rui put the thermos aside and pulled a chair over to sit down.

Qi Mi replied without even looking up: "It's for making weapons. That fruit knife won't be used many times."

Du Rui thought about it, looking puzzled: "I saw you brought back a kitchen knife and a watermelon knife earlier, don't you want to use them?"

"That's for you. I'm not used to using that stuff. I like to make it myself." She replied with a smile. Suddenly she thought of something and looked up to remind Du Rui: "By the way, those things must be kept away. Don't let those brats see them."

"Don't worry, it's already been put away."

Du Rui adjusted his glasses and leaned forward to take a closer look at what Qi Mi was holding.

It is a hollow elliptical cylinder, about half a meter long and about the thickness of two fingers.

He was watching intently when Qi Mi suddenly put down his welding pen and started grinding the outer skin of the elliptical cylinder with sandpaper.

In the silence, the scratching sound was loud. She paused, gripped the sandpaper tightly in her hand, and rubbed it slowly but firmly, trying not to disturb the child across the street.

Without waiting for Du Rui to ask again, Qi Mi took the lead in explaining the production process to him. She picked up an oval iron sheet with smooth edges and a round iron ring welded in the middle of the iron sheet. She said, "What I'm making now is a knife handle. Later, I will put this thin chain into it. One end of the chain is connected to the iron ring, and the other end is connected to the blade. In this way, the melee weapon can be transformed into a long-range weapon at will. Don't look at it as it is very rough now. When you see it tomorrow, it will be exactly the same as the one made in the factory."

As she said this, she smiled triumphantly, put down what she was holding, and stood up to get the thermos.

Du Rui was thoughtful for a moment, then sighed, "Thanks to you being here this time, otherwise we wouldn't know what it would be like if so many of us came to the end of the world." He thought, at least now we won't have to sit here and chat like nothing happened.

Qi Mi took a sip of water and said with a smile, "I'm the teacher of the Douding class, that's my duty."

Du Rui hummed softly, leaned forward slightly, and placed his hands over the fire to warm them.

In the silence between the two, the only sound was Qi Mi's soft rubbing of the iron sheet.

A few minutes later, she broke the silence first: "Teacher Du, do you have anything to ask me?"

Du Rui hesitated for a moment and adjusted his glasses:

"Just now I heard you say that humans in this world are divided into three types due to advancement. One is ordinary humans who haven't advanced, one is those who failed to advance and turned into monsters, and the other is the advanced ones who have successfully advanced... I want to ask, if the advancement is successful, will those people's bodies become very special?"

Qi Mi paused and looked up.

Du Rui pursed his lips, raised his head, and finally asked the question he wanted to ask the most: "I mean... can humans who have successfully advanced still be called humans?"

A hint of surprise flashed in Qi Mi's eyes.

After a moment's silence, she chuckled and said, "It probably... depends on whether there's still any humanity left, right?"

She couldn't say anything too absolutely. After all, she had never seen the [Advanced People] in this world, and she didn't know what this kind of people looked like.

Moreover, even she herself is different from Du Rui and the others.

After several apocalyptic experiences, her body has been honed to develop special skills.

"Strictly speaking, I can't be considered a 'person' in your words." Qi Mi stared at Du Rui, pulled the corner of his mouth, and emphasized the word "person".

After all, who among normal humans could possibly possess the ability to kill monsters?

Du Rui thought Qi Mi was talking about her, so she quickly waved her hands and explained, "No, Teacher Qi, I'm not talking about you. I'm just... just worried..."

"Well, I know you're not talking about me. I'll find a way to find Shadow as soon as possible. Don't worry."

"Um……"

"Teacher Zheng will be scared if she stays there alone for too long. Why don't you go over and keep her company?"

"Huh? Oh."

Du Rui slowly stood up after being ordered to leave by Qi's fans. When he reached the door, he couldn't help but look back: "Teacher Qi..."

Qi Mi looked up.

Du Rui's face was stern as he spoke word by word, "You are a human being, a beautiful and strong one."

As he said this, he nodded seriously.

Qi Mi was stunned for a moment, then raised the corner of his mouth after he reacted.

It is said that nephews take after their uncles, usually they are taciturn and expressionless, but when they start praising others seriously, it can really warm people's hearts.

Her eyes turned, and she suddenly smiled playfully: "Who is beautiful, me or Teacher Zheng?"

Du Rui: “…”

Qi Mi raised an eyebrow: "Teacher Du?"

Du Rui paused for a few seconds, then turned around with an expressionless face.

Although he spoke softly, Qi Mi's hearing was sharp, and he still heard two faint words -

It's her.

For a moment, Qi Mi's lips curled up even deeper, and he unconsciously hummed a relaxing tune.

She was humming so seriously that she didn't notice that there was another person outside the window.

The young man leaned against the wall, a smile in his eyes, and tapped the wall with his fingertips to help her beat the rhythm.

A few moths saw the bright flame in the window, flapped their wings and flew over quickly, and turned into ashes the moment the boy raised his eyes.

He seemed to be afraid of being noticed by Qi Mi, so he quickly took a peek inside the room. Seeing that she was fiddling with the things in her hands without moving, he let out a sigh of relief.

That look was so tender and lingering, like a tightly wound string that couldn't be retracted for a long time.

Suddenly a gust of wind blew, and the boy withdrew his gaze, his expression suddenly becoming cold.

He glanced reluctantly into the house once more before transforming into a black-tailed swallowtail butterfly and fluttering away. After he was a little further away from the kindergarten, he returned to normal, his elegant face expression expressionless.

He was summoned by two men and one woman, dressed in formal black suits with a distinctive phoenix emblem pinned to their collars. Upon seeing the young man, the three men immediately put their hands behind their backs, stepped forward, and whispered, "Judge."

The boy nodded and hummed softly.

"We went back and checked the information of the players in this doomsday. The thirteen people from the kindergarten are indeed not there. There may be some unknown bugs this time." The leading woman reported. She had a high ponytail and wore a pair of red-framed glasses. Her name - Zero - was engraved on the phoenix badge.

The boy seemed to have known the result for a long time. His expression remained calm as he waited silently for Zero's next words.

Ling frowned and tentatively asked the boy, "Judge, do you think we should send some people over to secretly protect them?"

"No need," he replied.

Zero hesitated for a moment and wanted to continue speaking, but was interrupted by the boy: "Leave this to me."

After hearing this, Ling adjusted her glasses in disbelief. If she hadn't been so well-trained, her mouth would have dropped open. Hiding her surprise, she coughed softly and asked, "Are you planning on guarding this place yourself?"

The boy glanced at her and said, "Yeah."

He was about to leave when he suddenly thought of something and turned back: "During this period, don't come to me if there is nothing wrong. If there is anything... let the agency handle it themselves. Understand?"

Zero stood at attention and nodded, "Understood!"

The boy stood there for two seconds, looking her up and down: "Why don't you leave?"

"Yes!" Ling suddenly realized and immediately left with his two men.

The three of them were light and nimble, leaping onto the roof in a few steps like cats, and soon disappeared into the darkness.

Bud class.

The knife handle Qi Mi had made was already taking shape, and now it was time to weld the chain. While this battery-powered welding torch was convenient and lightweight, it wasn't as easy to use as a plug-in welding torch. She stared until her eyes were dry before she finally finished welding the knife handle to one end of the chain.

She carefully placed it aside, stood up, tapped her shoulders, stretched a bit, and opened her phone to check the clock. It was almost eleven o'clock. Worried that she wouldn't be able to get the little ones up in time tomorrow morning, she walked around the room twice before sitting back down and speeding up.

She picked up a machete.

I picked it up on the road by accident. It looked very much like the waist knife used by ethnic minorities, with a crescent-shaped blade. Unfortunately, there was a big crack on the handle, and there was no matching scabbard, so I had to find it and make it myself.

Just as I used tools to pry open the old handle of the waist knife, I suddenly heard footsteps outside the window.

Maybe it was because he stepped on some dry grass, making a slight noise.

Qi Mi immediately stood up and walked towards the window with a scimitar in his hand.

While pushing open the window with one hand, the scimitar in the other hand had already stabbed out neatly.

Swish!

The metal friction made a sharp sound, and the force was so great that a few sparks were produced in just a few seconds.

Looking closely, she saw a long, broad sword that was as tall as a person lying in front of her.

Qi Mi frowned, using one hand to fight against the machete and the broadsword, while the other hand quickly supported the window sill and jumped out. Just as he reached for the fruit knife at his waist to strike the sneaky man again, he heard the man shouting to stop.

"Oh my god! Wait a minute! I'm not a bad person, I just saw the light and came over to take a look!"

Qi Mi paused for a moment, holding the knife tightly.

In the dim firelight, she saw that the person coming was a blonde, blue-eyed foreign woman wearing a sexy army green tank top, camouflage overalls, and a beautiful rose tattooed on her chest.

She looked frightened, her eyes wide open, and she repeatedly waved the glowing phone in her hand to prove her innocence: "Don't be impulsive, pretty girl, I don't have any ill will towards you!"
