Chapter 9

The first period on the timetable was supposed to be Chinese class, but it was Ms. Hu, the English teacher, who walked in.

As soon as she came in, she said, "We've switched classes with your teacher, Ms. Liu. The first two periods will be English quizzes. Put all the books away from your desks and don't do anything embarrassing. If you're going to cheat, try cheating in the college entrance exam."

After she finished speaking, she divided the test papers in her hand into three parts and placed them on the tables in the first three rows, asking the students to pass them on to the back.

When they reached the third group and saw Ruan Bei, Teacher Hu paused for a moment, placed the test paper on Lin Dengke's desk, and turned back to the podium.

“Get the test paper and start working on it. Don’t dawdle. There’s no break in between. You all, what time is it and you still don’t know how to cherish time? There’s a student at No. 3 Middle School who was in a car accident and lost his leg and arm. He goes to school every day on crutches and with bandages in his arm. And look at you guys, you even ask for leave for a cold. You’re so delicate…”

Ruan Bei wrote his name at the top of the paper, ignoring what the English teacher said.

He was the only one in his class to have taken leave recently, and it wasn't a cold, but a persistent high fever.

However, there was no point in arguing with this teacher who was clearly making veiled criticisms. Ruan Bei believed that his temperament had been tempered and he had become strong enough.

If this were the real young Ruan Bei, he would be truly ashamed and saddened right now.

Having experienced more, and with English no longer a weak point, Ruan Bei ignored everything else and buried himself in writing the test paper.

Although Jincheng No.1 High School, where he studied, was not the best high school in the city, it was a long-established prestigious school that had once been the top school in the city.

However, in recent years, while other high schools have implemented various reforms to attract teachers and outstanding students, No. 1 High School, which is proud of its status, has been slow to react, allowing other schools to catch up and now it has fallen behind.

However, the school has a solid foundation, and most of the teachers are very skilled. They often give students practice tests, which are considered "secret tests" when taken outside the school.

Even Mr. Hu, whom Ruan Bei dislikes, is quite skilled at setting exam questions; he once correctly predicted the cloze test section of the college entrance exam several years ago.

So even though she has a foul mouth and a bad attitude towards students, her position remains secure.

The practice tests they are doing now are also set by Teacher Hu. She is most proud of the fact that she once predicted the college entrance examination questions. She often tells her students, "You should cherish every set of practice tests I set. You never know when you might encounter the same questions on the college entrance examination."

The quiz didn't have a listening section, and two classes plus a break were barely enough time to finish it. Ruan Bei wrote it down very smoothly, experiencing a joy she had never felt before when taking high school English exams.

Teacher Hu stood on the podium, looking down at Ruan Bei from time to time. Seeing that Ruan Bei wrote quickly and spent very little time thinking about the questions, Teacher Hu secretly curled his lip.

The bell rang for the end of the second period. Teacher Hu collected the papers and said a few unpleasant things to some students who hadn't finished and were slow to hand them in.
