Forty-eight

From afar, I could see the city lord's mansion decorated with lanterns and streamers, a festive and lively scene. Rows of people stood at the grand and spacious gate.

"You two take the new son-in-law to change his clothes." The barbarian city lord casually pointed to two little demons and gave them the order as they entered the door.

"Yes, Lord City Lord." The little demon replied respectfully, turned around and bowed to me, saying, "My lord, please follow me."

I nodded slightly and followed behind the little demon, carefully observing the surroundings of the city lord's mansion and secretly memorizing the route.

"My lord, we've arrived." The little demon stopped in front of a door. This room was some distance from the front hall, and a long corridor led to the front courtyard.

"I can go in and change myself, no need for you to trouble yourselves." As I entered the room, I saw the little demons coming forward to take off my clothes and put on my wedding dress, so I quickly stopped them.

"Okay." The little demon was sensible and didn't say anything more, silently retreating to wait outside the door.

The room was neither too big nor too small. The wedding dress was folded up and placed on the table. It was indeed something prepared by the lord of the city; one could tell it was extraordinary just by looking at it.

If I don't slip away now, when will I? There are only two minor demons at the gate; with their cultivation level, they can't possibly stop me.

I used magic to slip out of the room unnoticed and ran along the route I had just silently memorized. But after walking for a while, I realized something was wrong. This didn't seem to be the courtyard I had just passed through.

I stopped and scratched my head. I remembered that the path I had just taken seemed different from the one I was on now. Just as I was thinking, two little demons rushed past me, shouting, "Oh no! The young lady has committed suicide!"

Someone committed suicide? I murmured to myself, "Young Miss? Isn't this the spoiled brat I was supposed to marry? No way, marrying me isn't that bad, is it? She actually committed suicide!"

I originally wanted to go see that girl, but then I thought it best not to cause trouble and to slip away as soon as possible.

I'd only taken a few steps when I turned back, stamping my foot slightly. "Fine, I'll go check it out anyway." It was still a life lost, and I had a good impression of Man Jiao'er. I also felt a pang of guilt; my disruptive behavior, whatever the reason, was somewhat unacceptable.

I followed the direction the two little demons had come from. Such a big event as Man Jiao'er's suicide was bound to cause quite a stir. I hadn't walked two steps when I noticed a courtyard ahead that was unusually lively. That must be it.

I quietly sneaked into the courtyard, which was already in chaos. Today was a joyous day, so the bride's courtyard was naturally crowded with people, and they were all talking about it outside.

I couldn't be bothered to listen to their gossip, so I went straight inside to check on Manjiao'er.

The girl's room always had a faint, pleasant fragrance. The room was much quieter, with only two servants and a man who looked like a doctor treating the little girl.

Through the red veil, Man Jiao'er's figure was faintly visible. I used my divine sense to probe and found that Man Jiao'er's breath was weak, but she still had a breath left. I was relieved, and it seemed that she could be saved.

Just as I was about to leave, the barbarian city lord rushed over in a panic. "Jiao'er, my precious daughter, why are you thinking of committing suicide?"

Unfortunately, Man Jiao'er was currently lying weakly in bed and unable to answer the city lord's questions.

"Witch doctor, is my daughter alright?" The city lord first glanced worriedly at the barbarian girl on the bed, then turned around and grabbed the man's arm, speaking urgently.

"Reporting to the city lord, fortunately, she was discovered in time, and the young lady is unharmed." The man spoke calmly and unhurriedly, a stark contrast to the city lord's anxiety.

"Then why isn't he awake yet?" the city lord asked, still somewhat worried.

"Miss is still quite weak and unconscious for the time being. She will wake up soon."

"That's good." The city lord of Man City was finally relieved. He released the man's arm and sat down by Man Jiao'er's bedside, quietly watching Jiao'er.
