Back at the camp, I told Pu Weichao and Fei Lichao about it, and their expressions were quite different.
Fei Lichao looked thoughtful and said, "These two really went into Jiajiang City?"
I nodded: "Yes, if they're not lying to me, the two of them should be heading into Jiajiang City, and one of them even hinted that he has a companion in the city and asked if I wanted to go back with him."
Pu Weichao stroked his chin and said, "Judging from what you said, I estimate that these two college students really do have a team behind them, a team similar to ours."
Fei Lichao and I watched him.
He said, "But we don't need to worry too much. If that group is really in Jiajiang City, they are probably far away from us. Plus, there are so many zombies in the city, so the chances of us running into them are very small."
"Yeah, even if we run into each other, it's no big deal," Fei Lichao laughed. "Let's not talk about that. Xiaonan, let me tell you, we've had a really big haul today!"
"What's wrong?" I asked curiously.
Pu Weichao smiled and said, "The situation at the school is much better than we expected. I estimate that we can move in before the Chinese New Year."
Before the New Year? I gave a wry smile, then suddenly remembered that it was already early February, and in two more days it would be almost Chinese New Year.
Does celebrating the Lunar New Year still have any meaning now? I'm wondering.
"Let's set off together tomorrow and clean up the scattered zombies on campus first. Then, the next day we'll go to the dormitories to deal with the zombies there, and then we can move in and get a good night's sleep." Pu Weichao was very excited.
"Yeah, at least we can finally get a good night's sleep," Fei Lichao said, smiling, but his eyes were full of exhaustion.
In fact, not only him, but Pu Weichao's eyes were also full of fatigue.
To be honest, I'm tired, and everyone is tired. In the current situation, everyone has to be on edge every day, afraid that a monster will appear behind them and bite them to death. How can we not be tired if we keep going like this every day?
However, once the school issue is resolved, this constant state of tension will likely ease. With the school as a defense, no one will need to be afraid of the monsters outside.
If things go smoothly tomorrow and the day after, we should be able to move in before the new year.
"By the way, I heard you extorted a vacuum-packed chicken from those two college students?" Pu Weichao asked.
"Yes, that's right." I nodded, without denying it.
"How about this, since the chicken is vacuum-packed, it won't spoil in a day or two. Let's not eat it today, and we can take it out and eat it on New Year's Eve after we move into the school," Pu Weichao suggested.
I smiled and said, "I have no objection, but you should hurry over and tell the others, otherwise they'll cook the chicken and then we won't have anything to eat."
Pu Weichao raised an eyebrow. "Right, I need to go tell them right away!"
After saying that, he ran off towards the old house.
Fei Lichao watched Pu Weichao's retreating figure, shook his head, and smiled bitterly.
"Sigh." Fei Lichao suddenly sighed and said, "These days have been really damn tiring."
I stood beside him, and I saw him take a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket. I saw that there were only two left in it, and he shook them all out and handed one to me.
Without hesitation, I took the cigarette and put it in my mouth.
He pulled out a lighter and flicked it in front of him, the flame shooting out and igniting the cigarette butt.
I took a drag, and a hissing sound came from the cigarette butt. The smoke entered my lungs without me feeling anything. I turned my head and saw two plumes of smoke coming out of Fei Lichao's nostrils.
"I won't be so tired once school is over."
“Yes, once I get to school, I’m not tired anymore.” Fei Lichao chuckled, changing the subject, “I haven’t asked you yet, what did you see after you got home?”
I took a drag of my cigarette and said, "I didn't see my parents' bodies, nor did I see any living people. I only saw that they left a note on the door saying that they had gone to the safe zone."
Fei Lichao's hand paused because of my words. He turned his head and asked after a long pause, "What are you thinking? What are you planning to do?"
I shook my head: "I don't have any thoughts. I believe they are still alive until I see my parents."
Fei Lichao nodded. "It's a good thing to have this idea."
I smiled and asked, "And you, where are your family?"
Fei Lichao smiled but didn't say anything.
Seeing that he didn't seem interested in answering my question, I didn't press the matter further and changed the subject, chatting about some random things.
We didn't go back to our room until they called us to finish eating.
Upon entering the house, Pu Weichao found that he had managed to keep the vacuum-packed chicken. Although there was no meat to eat today, having rice was still a good thing. Along with other odds and ends, this dinner was the best he had eaten in recent days.
After tonight, we'll begin our struggle for a new life!
...
The next morning, around 7:30, not long after dawn.
Our group of six set off for the vocational high school in the southwest corner of Jiajiang City.
Besides me, the six people were Pu Weichao, Fei Lichao, Yan Zhengfeng, Lu Jing, and Zhang Zhihao.
The sedimentation didn't come because someone had to keep an eye on the camp to prevent anything from happening.
Moreover, according to Fei Lichao, six people are enough, and the main force is the four of us. Lu Jing and Zhang Zhihao only need to cooperate with us.
In less than half an hour, we entered Jiajiang City from Wutong Avenue. After about a kilometer, we headed north and stopped after about two or three hundred meters.
The vocational high school is located in a rather remote area, so there aren't many monsters or vehicles around.
Actually, a large part of the reason why this place is safe is that when the disaster occurred, all the living people in Jiajiang City ran to the safe zone, which is far away from here, so this place was suddenly empty.
The six of us got out of the pickup truck and easily dealt with the monsters around us.
I looked around and noticed that there was an even larger school in front of the vocational high school. I pointed to the larger school and asked, "Is this... a university?"
Pu Weichao nodded: "Oh, right, Jiajiang Vocational and Technical College, a junior college. I originally chose this university, but I thought it was too big, and I guessed there were all sorts of monsters inside, so I settled for this vocational high school instead."
I nodded, realizing that a university was indeed too big.
There are too few of us to swallow.
One high school is enough for us.
When we arrived at the school gate, we found that the movable gate was full of monsters. These monsters became excited as soon as they saw us.
Fortunately, they were blocked by the retractable gate and couldn't get out.
Fei Lichao looked at us and said, "Damn it, let's start! We're going to kill all these beasts today!"
