However, after the power was restored, the three of us heard noises downstairs, like the sound of doors opening. The doors that had been locked seemed to have opened the moment the power was turned on.
Moreover, the power system seemed unstable; a moment later, the outside lights dimmed instantly.
It doesn't go out, it just gets darker.
Seeing this, Wen Guochao said, "The battery must have run out of power before, and it can't hold up all at once. But it's okay, as long as the solar panels on the roof are working, we can keep using it. Don't worry. I'll turn it off for now and turn it back on when the power is fully restored tonight."
"Well, it's up to you to decide. We don't know anything about this either," I said.
As Wen Guochao spoke, he turned off the main switch, and the entire research institute fell into a deep sleep once again, with all the lights being turned off.
The surroundings were plunged into complete darkness once again.
The flashlight in his hand was still on.
I said, "Since it works, let's go downstairs and check the places on the second floor and the first floor where the doors were not open before, to see if there are any zombies."
We left the power distribution room and didn't linger on the stench-filled third floor; we went straight to the second floor.
Upon entering the second floor, we heard the roar of zombies coming from the darkness.
Upon hearing the noise, we all retreated to the stairwell.
Then, shining a flashlight forward, we soon saw a zombie emerge from an open door. The zombie was wearing a white coat, and its body was already rotting.
Lu Yun wanted to go over and deal with it, but I stopped her and said, "Don't rush, there are definitely more than just this one zombie on the second floor. Let's lure them all out first."
As I spoke, I tapped the wall with my machete. After a few crisp clangs, the zombies that had been locked in the rooms clearly heard the noise coming from the stairwell, and more and more roars came from those rooms.
The rooms on the second floor were originally pitch black, so the zombies inside didn't move. But now that they heard a sound, they naturally came out.
Under the light of the flashlight, we saw many zombies; I roughly counted about a dozen.
They all walked towards us.
Upon seeing this, Wen Guochao had already retreated to the very back.
Lu Yun stood in front of me, and when the first zombie came to her, she slashed it down and killed it.
Then, more than a dozen zombies all rushed up to me. I stood behind Lu Yun and helped her kill the zombies.
The zombies in front of us are all slow-moving, and there are no zombies that can run, so killing these zombies is a very easy task.
In less than two minutes, more than a dozen zombies were all lying on the ground.
I tapped the wall with my machete again, but this time, there was no response from the houses.
"I'll go take another look," Lu Yun said.
"Hmm, be careful."
A few minutes later, Lu Yun returned from her check and confirmed that there were no more zombies on the second floor.
When we returned to the first floor, we were very careful. However, the situation on the first floor was much better than on the second floor. Moreover, we learned after we came down that the zombies on the first floor had been killed by Sister Jing.
When Sister Jing saw that we had come out of the research institute unharmed, she relaxed and came over to hug me and Lu Yun, saying, "It's good that you're alright. I was so scared when I saw the zombies coming out."
I said with a smile, "Sister Jing, don't worry, we're fine. Besides, I think we can live here from now on."
Jingjie looked at me and Lu Yun in surprise.
Lu Yun said excitedly, "Sis! The solar panels on this research institute still work! So, we don't have to worry about anything anymore! With electricity, we can do so many things! We can even turn on the air conditioner!"
Jing asked me, "Is there really electricity?"
I nodded and said, "Sister Jing, it's true. Wen Guochao just restored the power system, but the battery still has low power. It should be usable by tonight."
Jingjie looked up at the research institute in front of her, somewhat incredulous.
To be honest, I find it a little hard to believe.
When we came here, our plan was clear: if the research institute fell, we would leave and find another place to live.
But now that we can use electricity in the research institute, it is very tempting for us. Moreover, with electricity, our lives will be much more convenient. Therefore, this place has become our first choice for living.
Moreover, this is on the outskirts of Mingzhu City, not far from the city center, making it convenient for us to go to Mingzhu City to find supplies.
The only problem now is cleaning up the corpses in the research institute.
The corpses in the research institute are already rotting and must be removed. Then, the air in the institute needs to be circulated; otherwise, we might get infected by the bacteria inside and become sick if left there for too long.
Without hesitation, we got ready and had Fei Lichao take care of Wen Yue. The rest of us, all wearing masks and gloves, entered the research institute and started moving all the corpses from the first floor outside.
Then there's the second floor, where the dozen or so corpses are a real problem.
One of the corpses was so badly decomposed around the waist that when Jingjie and I lifted it up, the waist broke off, and a bunch of disgusting stuff came out, which annoyed us a lot.
Despite the numerous problems that arise.
Fortunately, we accomplished our mission. A little over an hour later, we moved all the corpses from the research institute outside and also cleaned up all the other things inside.
Afterwards, Wen Guochao turned on the power, activated the sterilization system and air circulation system in the research institute, and also opened the electronic retractable gate outside the institute.
Next, all we need to do is wait for the lab to sterilize and disinfect itself. As for the corpses outside, we'll load them all into the back of a pickup truck, drive them a distance away, pour gasoline on them, and burn them.
With all this commotion, time really flew by.
It was around 5 p.m. when we parked both cars inside the walled area and started a fire there.
The disinfection and sterilization process at the research institute will take almost the entire night, with the air circulation system running continuously. I think we'll be able to move into the institute tomorrow.
Looking at the research institute beside me, I smiled slightly.
Life should get better from now on.
What a twist of fate! I thought I would be wandering forever after leaving Jiajiang, but I never expected to find such a wonderful place as the research institute!
What luck!
