"Let me introduce myself first. My name is Li Qiming, and Zhang Zhihao is my wife's younger brother," Li Qiming said.
"Hello." I nodded.
Li Qiming stared at my ID card and said, "Lu Xiaonan, right? You look quite young, you must be an intern, right?"
"Um."
Which hospital did you work at before?
“Linshan Hospital,” I said.
Li Qiming frowned. "Linshan Hospital? So you were in Linshan District before? How did you end up here?"
My eyes were filled with countless thoughts, and I said, "It's a long story."
"Then let's keep it simple."
I nodded and briefly recounted what had happened to me, including how Zhang Zhihao stole my things and how I chased after him.
However, I omitted some things, such as Yan Zhengfeng's attempt to kill me and the fall of the air-raid shelter.
After some questioning, Li Qiming was not as wary of me as before.
Moreover, I can tell that these people are just ordinary people. They are not as powerful and decisive as Fei Lichao; they are more interested in protecting their own interests.
"Since you're a doctor, why don't you come and help me take a look?" Li Qiming said.
"Huh?" I asked, surprised.
At this moment, a man who looked to be about the same age as Li Qiming stepped forward. He reached out and shook my hand, saying, "Doctor, my name is Zhou Zhengnan. Could you please go and check on my daughter for me?"
"Your daughter? What happened?" I asked.
Zhou Zhengnan said anxiously, "I don't know what's wrong. My daughter has had a cold and fever for the past two days, and even the medicine hasn't helped. Doctor, you should take a look."
Zhou Zhengnan led me to an office in the kindergarten. As soon as I entered, I saw a woman lying on a recliner with a five or six-year-old girl in her arms. She looked pale and sickly.
According to Zhou Zhengnan, his wife's name is Lu Jing and his daughter's name is Zhou Luya.
"Honey, a doctor has arrived," Zhou Zhengnan said as he walked over.
Li Qiming, who was next to me, said, "Let's go take a look. His daughter has been like this for several days. Since you are a doctor, you must have a solution, right?"
“I’ll do my best,” I said.
Reaching the recliner, Lu Jing looked at me and asked, "Are you the doctor?"
"Hmm, let me see," I said with a smile.
Lu Jing looked haggard; she probably hadn't slept well for many days.
The little girl in her arms was breathing heavily. I wanted to take a stethoscope to check on her, but when I saw the faint black veins on her neck, my hand trembled slightly.
"Doctor, what's wrong?" Zhou Zhengnan asked in surprise.
I snapped out of my daze and said, "It's okay, let me check."
As I spoke, I grabbed the little girl's arm, rolled up her sleeve, and saw the dark veins spreading beneath her fair skin. I felt helpless.
I remained expressionless, smiled, gave Zhou Zhengnan a wink, and then walked out of the office.
Zhou Zhengnan and Li Qiming followed me outside the office. Zhou Zhengnan asked anxiously, "How is she? Is my daughter... alright?"
My expression was serious, and I didn't know what to say.
Although I didn't examine it carefully, I knew that the little girl hadn't been bitten, just like Yan Zhengfeng's son, Beibei, who was also infected with the Ehrlich virus.
Yan Zhengfeng's son has already turned into a monster and died; I guess this little girl will be next.
"Tell me quickly, what happened?" Li Qiming asked anxiously.
I shook my head and said, "The situation is very bad."
"What do you mean?" Li Qiming frowned.
I looked at Zhou Zhengnan and said, "You saw the black veins on your daughter's arm just now, didn't you?"
"Yes, I saw it." Zhou Zhengnan nodded blankly, not understanding.
"What's wrong with the black veins?" Li Qiming asked, puzzled.
I frowned, puzzled as to why they didn't know about the black veins. When the virus first broke out, black veins appeared on everyone who was bitten; they should have been easy to see.
Or did they never notice?
I said, "I think you've all seen it; when those people outside first turned into monsters, their bodies were covered in black veins."
"Huh?" Zhou Zhengnan looked at me in confusion.
"What do you mean?" Li Qiming asked. "Are you saying that Old Zhou's daughter will turn into one of those monsters outside?"
I nodded solemnly, "There's a high probability, so we must be prepared."
Zhou Zhengnan shook his head, refusing to believe it. "Impossible! How could this be? My daughter has never encountered those monsters outside, how could she possibly change! You, you're lying to me, right? You're deliberately lying to us, aren't you!"
Li Qiming also looked at me with suspicion. "Yeah, I've been with Lao Zhou and the others from the beginning. This little girl has hardly ever seen any monsters outside. How could she possibly turn into a monster? Are you not sure yourself, and you're just trying to scare us?!"
Looking at the two of them, I felt a pang of sadness and said, "Something similar happened to me when I was in the air-raid shelter, otherwise I wouldn't be saying this. There are many reasons why this might happen, such as being infected from the beginning, or eating something contaminated with blood, etc. There are many reasons. I know it's hard for you to accept, but that's the truth. I'm sorry."
"What do you mean 'that's the truth'! Aren't you a doctor? You must have a way! Right?!" Li Qiming grabbed my collar and yelled angrily.
