Chapter 59 Unexpected People

(Two updates today, and tomorrow as well)

As soon as she said it, Wu Shuang cried even harder.

If it weren't for the glass separating us, I really would want to hug her right now.

After a moment, Wu Shuang calmed down, wiped away her tears, and asked, "Xiaonan, how did you get here? Did Zhang Jianzhou capture you too?"

"I guess so." I didn't know how to answer, so I asked, "And you, why were you locked up here?"

Her face contorted in pain as she rolled up her sleeves, revealing her pale arms.

However, on her arm, there was a bite wound that looked several days old, scabbed over, and quite gruesome.

“I was bitten, and they locked me up here when they caught me.”

I was instantly filled with despair—I'd been bitten!

Wait!

I stared at her in confusion: "But, but if you were bitten, how could you... Could it be that Zhang Jianzhou succeeded in his research?"

Wu Shuang shook his head decisively and said, "No! How could he possibly succeed in his research! Xiaonan, you must not listen to him, you know? What he said is all wishful thinking! I'm only alive now because I'm exposed to radiation every day. It's because of the radiation that the Ehrlich virus in my body has delayed its onset!"

"But I can still feel my body changing, I can feel it. In fact, before I was locked up here, someone was treated like this, and he still died."

Wu Shuang looked dejected, pained, and frightened.

I clenched my fists, filled with resentment. Why! Why did Wu Shuang have to endure such despair!

Seeing my expression, Wu Shuang suddenly smiled and said, "Actually, after I was captured and brought here, I thought about you every day. I was even thinking that it would be great if I could see you one more time before I die. It seems that God has really been kind to me and has brought you here to see me."

Seeing her smile, I couldn't hold back any longer, and tears streamed down my face.

"Don't talk nonsense. There's definitely a way to save you, a way to keep you alive!"

Wu Shuang shook his head, touching the glass as if he were touching my cheek: "Stop talking such useless nonsense. You know in your heart that the world has become like this and is beyond saving."

"I don't believe it!" I shouted.

Wu Shuang laughed and said, "Don't worry about me. The most important thing now is for you to live well. I can't survive. Of course, if you can, I want to leave here. I want to see the sunrise before I leave this world. I haven't seen the sun in so long. Also, I want to get my watch back. It was a gift I was going to give to my boyfriend!"

"I guess that's impossible. Zhang Jianzhou definitely won't let me out," Wu Shuang said with a smile.

Her smile seemed so desperate to me.

I clenched my fist, about to speak, when the lab door reopened.

Zhang Jianzhou and the soldiers came back in and said, "Five minutes are up. Go and bring him out."

Two soldiers came over and dragged me away. I tried to resist, but they didn't give me a chance to fight back.

"Wu Shuang..." I called out, and was led out of the laboratory.

My arms were held in two soldiers' hands, and I couldn't move at all. It was impossible for me to make a move against Zhang Jianzhou!

Zhang Jianzhou stood in front of me, hands in his pockets, and smiled, "How was it?"

I stared at him. "What do you mean, 'how about it'?"

Zhang Jianzhou wiped the tears from my cheeks with his fingers and said, "The young couple is crying quite a lot."

I looked away and said, "I'm asking you, do you have any way to cure her?"

Zhang Jianzhou shook his head and said, "I'm not sure."

"What's the meaning?"

Zhang Jianzhou raised an eyebrow: "Her condition is very serious. She was on the verge of death when she was brought in, and she's only barely surviving thanks to the radiation. There's almost no chance of a complete cure. After all, antibody research is still in its early stages and is currently ineffective. However, if we can make further progress in the current research within a month, it might be possible to extend this little girl's life a bit."

I stared at him. "So what do you want me to do?"

Zhang Jianzhou said with a smile, "It's very simple. Stay here with me and we'll study this together. Maybe one day we can develop an antibody for the virus. Of course, if you don't want to, I'll kill that little girl inside and throw you into the zombie horde. Anyway, I don't care if you're missing. I'm just keeping you here to speed up the research."

I squinted and pondered his words.

If what Zhang Jianzhou said is true, my staying might be of some help, but only minimal. To advance the research, we absolutely need him. But what if the research is successful and he refuses to save Wu Shuang?

But now this is the only hope to save Wu Shuang! I don't want her to die!

I looked up and said, "I'll let you stay, but I hope you'll agree to my conditions!"

Zhang Jianzhou stared at me with a half-smile and said, "You can say whatever you want, as long as it's not excessive."

"Release my friends, the two who were arrested with me."

Zhang Jianzhou seemed thoughtful, then finally nodded: "No problem, I can release them now and let them fend for themselves outside. Anything else? Are there any other conditions?"

"I want to see them leave with my own eyes."

"no problem."

...

Ten minutes later.

I stood at the window on the fifth floor and saw that Pu Weichao and Shen Dian had been released outside the main entrance downstairs. Under duress, they had returned to the tile shop across the street.

Zhang Jianzhou said, "Are you satisfied now?"

I turned my head and said, "I want to go see Wu Shuang again."

“No problem. You’ve already agreed to stay here, so you can look at her however you want,” Zhang Jianzhou said. “However, it’s best not to stay too long. That room is full of radiation, and staying there for too long is bad for your health. So, I’ll give you five minutes this time. Come out after five minutes, understand?”

...

They returned to the laboratory where Wu Shuang worked.

I looked around the room and noticed a camera on the ceiling pointing directly at the glass enclosure; it was clearly for surveillance.

When Wu Shuang saw me return, she excitedly came to the edge of the glass room and asked, "Are you alright?"

By this time, I had calmed down and said, "It's okay, don't worry."

"I just saw them take you away. I was so scared that I would never see you again." As Wu Shuang spoke, tears streamed down her face again.

Seeing her like that really pained me. However, I've also come to understand something, so I've decided to do something about it.

I said, "I went out just now and found out something."

Wu Shuang looked at me curiously and asked, "What's wrong?"

I smiled and said, "I plan to take you to see the sunrise."
