When Yan Shi overheard his daughter's phone call with You Jing, he rested his chin on his hand and asked Yan Nuan, "Do you treat You Jing like a pet or a son?"
Yan Nuan rolled her eyes.
"Can't he just be a friend?"
"I always feel that you are interfering too much with your friends, and you are basically arranging their lives."
"There's nothing I can do. He doesn't know anything and has no friends. If I don't spend more time with him, he'll be so pitiful."
"I felt the same way about your father at first. Don't underestimate a woman's sympathy; it can drag her into an abyss."
"Don't keep saying things like that to scare me."
"Sorry, I always end up saying these things without thinking. Just listen to it and don't take it too seriously. If we think Youjing's character is questionable, we'll remind you. Don't blame us for interfering then."
"Whether it's dating or friendship, character is the most important thing."
"That's right."
Seeing that Yan Nuanzhen had taken his words to heart, Yan Shi breathed a sigh of relief. He wondered if it was because they inherited it from their parents, but the children hadn't been very rebellious in middle and high school. Now that adolescence was almost over, he hoped they wouldn't be misled or led astray.
She felt more at ease with Yan Han, who was quiet and had a strong interest in learning. However, Yan Nuan, who was carefree and easygoing, was not someone who would easily come to her senses once she got stuck on something.
Ghost Festival
The temple was indeed quite interesting. You could listen to chanting, copy Buddhist scriptures, eat vegetarian meals, dig for bamboo shoots, pick mushrooms, and there were always some small animals visiting from the back mountain. Yan Han basically lived in the back mountain.
Yan Shi and Zhuang Zhao held hands as they watched the sunrise and sunset, strolled through the bamboo forest and admired the camellias, immersing themselves in their own little world.
Yan Nuan wandered around with her phone in hand, showing You Jing the scenery on the mountain, which made it not too boring.
As the holiday drew to a close, Yan Han headed straight to Youjing after returning from the mountain.
"I dug up the bamboo shoots myself, I picked the mushrooms myself, I got the lucky charm for you, and I packed the vegetarian meal for you. How about that? Pretty generous of me, right?"
"Yan Nuan, you don't need to take care of me like this anymore," You Jing suddenly said.
"Huh? What's wrong? Did someone talk about you?"
"I'm too dependent on you; I need to become independent."
"I just brought you some food. It's not like I'm hindering your independence. What's wrong with friends bringing each other food?" Yan Nuan was unhappy. From You Jing's words, she felt like she was superfluous and doing a thankless job.
"But friendship should be mutual, and I haven't done anything for you."
"That's true. You've just come to the human world and are still a baby. I'll take extra care of you. When you grow up, you can take extra care of me. There's no need to see who gives more now."
"Furthermore, even if my friends do nothing, just listening to my troubles and sharing my joys is enough."
"Everyone is busy and has their own life. It's already very kind of them to be willing to sacrifice their time to be with you."
"I'll visit you less often and give you enough space." Yan Nuan felt increasingly uncomfortable as she spoke, and the more she felt she had been presumptuous, the more her words went astray.
"That's all for today. If you don't want to eat the vegetarian meal, put it in the refrigerator. If you don't want to eat it tomorrow, just throw it away, it'll spoil."
"I'm going back now."
Yan Nuan finished speaking and turned to leave, while You Jing was still a beat behind, trying to figure out how to express himself. Before he could even utter a word, she was already gone.
It seems like things have been messed up.
When Yan Nuan got downstairs, she looked back one last time, but the place was empty and there wasn't a soul in sight.
"You heartless bastard, you don't want to talk to me, and I don't want to talk to you either. It's not like I can't live without you."
Yan Nuan became increasingly sad as she thought about it, tears welling up in her eyes, making them hurt and feel dry.
Before entering her home, she lingered downstairs for a while, afraid that her family would notice.
It's hilarious, nobody's even looking at her, there's no one in the living room.
He went back to his room, took out his diary, and began to verbally attack You Jing.
She felt a little relieved after writing a whole article, and when she looked at the time, it was already nine o'clock. The variety show she was watching had just updated.
Immersed in the joy of the variety show, Yan Nuan was too preoccupied to notice anything else and didn't see the message sent by You Jing.
When You Jing saw that Yan Nuan didn't reply to her, she knew that Yan Nuan must still be angry. Just as she was about to go and explain to her, she ran into her uncle making a phone call.
"Little Whale, come help unload the goods, and bring over the leftover lunch from your refrigerator at home as well."
I can apologize tomorrow, right?
You Jing happily shifted the blame to her uncle, refusing to admit that she wasn't ready to meet Yan Nuan and that's why she wanted to postpone it until tomorrow.
The next morning, You Jing brought some snacks to find Yan Nuan, only to be told that Yan Nuan had gone out early.
"Where did you go?"
"She didn't say anything, I thought she went to find you. Did you two have a fight?" Yan Shi recalled the expression on Yan Nuan's face this morning, and considering that You Jing had come up empty-handed, it was easy for him to guess that something was wrong between the two.
There's a slight misunderstanding.
"The misunderstanding will be cleared up."
"Okay, Auntie."
I called Yan Nuan, but no one answered. I searched all the places she frequented nearby, but she wasn't there.
Youjing was completely distraught and had no energy to search anywhere else. He sat down on a chair at the bus stop and began to contemplate life.
He only had Yan Nuan as a friend, and no one to discuss things with. He was just thinking wildly and trying to organize his thoughts, unsure if he could accurately express them.
When she came to her senses, she called Yan Nuan, but no one answered.
The sun had set, and I was so hungry from not eating all day that my legs felt weak and my vision was blurry. I had to hold onto a chair to avoid falling over.
Yan Nuan ignored him, and he seemed to have lost all interest in living.
After walking only a few steps, everything went black, and he lost consciousness completely.
"Someone has collapsed over there!"
