Chapter 49 The Mysterious May 3rd

"Yes, I have a case to handle, so I really can't attend. That's why I'd like to ask you to go in my place."

"Yes, the invitation says you're welcome to invite friends along. You'll be with your dad, that kid named Guangyou, oh, and that guy with glasses, what's his name...?"

"Conan."

"Yes, you guys can all go to the tea party together! Please! I've already put the invitations in your mailboxes."

Hearing that she was only asked to attend a tea party, Xiaolan seemed a little angry: "You finally called me, and all you do is ask me for a favor!"

However, as if she had just thought of something, the anger on Xiaolan's face vanished: "Sure! But you have to agree to one condition!"

Upon hearing that conditions were required, Conan broke out in a cold sweat: "What conditions?"

"You have to promise me you'll go to see a midnight movie with me next Sunday."

Hearing the hesitation on the other end of the phone, Xiaolan said with a hint of threat, "It's nothing, we haven't seen each other in ages, let's meet in the lobby of Mihua Cinema!"

Remembering that he was still in a child's body, Conan panicked a little: "Wait a minute! Next Sunday, I won't be able to come!"

Xiaolan's attitude was very firm: "No, it has to be on May 3rd! It can't be changed! If you want me to go in your place, you have to come!"

Suddenly, Ran asked, "By the way, Shinichi, which do you prefer, red or blue?"

Conan pondered for a moment, then tentatively said, "Red, perhaps red..."

To Conan's relief, Ran seemed quite satisfied with the answer: "As expected, it's red! I knew you'd like red!"

Conan thought to himself: Because red is your favorite color. Kōyū told me before that if I encountered this kind of question, I should say what the other person likes. He was right.

Kogoro's voice came through the microphone to Conan's ears: "Ran, is dinner ready yet?"

Ran gave a perfunctory reply and turned to Conan, saying, "It's settled, Shinichi, it's 10 PM on the 3rd, don't forget!"

After saying that, Xiaolan hung up the phone.

Meanwhile, Conan was extremely troubled about how to go to the movies with Ran.

"But speaking of which, why does it have to be May 3rd? After watching the midnight showing, it's May 4th. Is it some kind of special occasion? Is it because that's the day Holmes and James Moriarty fell into the waterfall and died, and May 5th is Children's Day? Ran doesn't seem to care about any of that. What's the point of all this?!"

Conan racked his brains but couldn't come up with a solution; he was determined to go see a midnight movie on the night of May 3rd.

"Hey, is that Conan?"
