After finding the gift box containing chocolates in the refrigerator, Kwang-woo took the gift box directly back to the basement.
"I'm back."
Pushing open the basement door, Kōyū saw Ai sitting on her own bed, holding the teddy bear in her arms.
When she saw Kōyū come in, Ai put the teddy bear back on the bedside table and simply replied, "Mm."
"Here's the chocolate you wanted." Kwang-woo took a chocolate from the gift box and brought it to her lips.
After putting the chocolate in her mouth, Ai looked at Kousuke, who was still standing there, and asked, "Aren't you going to sit down?"
Upon hearing this, Kwangyu was stunned for a moment, but he quickly realized what was going on.
After placing the lidped gift box aside, Kōyū sat down next to Ai.
While eating chocolate, Ai leaned her head on Kousuke's shoulder.
Guangyou didn't say anything, just let her lean against him.
For the two of them, this peace was already a blessing.
They enjoyed the peace.
A few minutes later, Ai checked the time.
It's a little past eight in the evening.
It's not too early, not too late; it's time to wash up.
but...
Ai glanced at Kōyū sitting next to her; he showed no intention of getting up.
Let's go later.
After a while, Ai said, "I'm going to wash up first."
“Okay, go ahead,” Guangyou replied.
After saying that, Ai stood up, took a set of pajamas from the closet, and left the basement.
Kōyū, who remained in the basement, also stood up, walked to the table, picked up a novel, and sat down to read it.
There were no entertainment facilities in the room, only books and a computer.
Having just experienced some emotional turmoil, Guangyou wanted to calm himself down by reading.
Soon, Guangyou became immersed in the world created by the novel.
...
The protagonist in the novel has a tragic background.
Shortly after her birth, her parents' company went bankrupt, and they were even forced to the rooftop by debt collectors.
The court sent the young protagonist to an orphanage.
The protagonist wasn't exactly happy in the orphanage, but at least he had enough to eat.
But this didn't last forever.
Three years later, the orphanage was short of funds.
The director led the older children and staff of the institute to work and earn money.
After managing to hold on for a while using this method, the orphanage finally launched a fundraising campaign.
However, problems arose with the donations. A large portion of them was intercepted by certain individuals, and the remaining funds could not sustain the donations for long.
With so many children in the orphanage, the costs of food, medical care, and labor add up to a considerable sum.
The money earned from working and the remaining donations were just a drop in the bucket.
When things became unbearable, the orphanage launched another fundraising campaign and helped children in better circumstances find adoptive families to alleviate the burden.
Those people remained greedy, and the donations ran into problems again.
The dean knew perfectly well what was going on, but he had no evidence, and coupled with the corrupt system, he could only swallow his anger.
Another year passed, and the director, looking at the children in the orphanage, could no longer bear it.
He told the public about the donation, but it was quickly suppressed.
He himself was falsely accused, imprisoned, and eventually died in despair.
The orphanage's funding chain quickly broke down, leading to its closure, and the protagonist was adopted by a young couple.
Everything was fine for the first few months, but then the young couple's marriage ran into problems, and he was awarded to the woman.
The woman, taking advantage of her youth, found a man to take her in.
However, the man who took over the relationship didn't like the protagonist, so the protagonist was pushed back to his previous adoptive father.
The adoptive father was also young and didn't want to have a burden on him.
The protagonist, caught in the middle, silently left that home one night.
From then on, he lived on the streets, sometimes going hungry and sometimes barely getting enough to eat.
...
Upon seeing this, Guangyou felt that his mood not only did not calm down, but instead became even more depressed.
Am I just asking for trouble?
Guangyou, questioning the meaning of life, glanced at the book title—"Sunshine."
Judging from the title, there should be a twist at the end.
If there is no reversal...
Reopening the book titled "Sunshine," Guangyou felt that if there was no plot twist later on, he would need to send the author some razor blades or go to him for a talk about life.
With this in mind, Kwangyu continued watching.
...
The disheartened protagonist wanders the streets.
In his eyes, the world had lost its color.
After drifting along aimlessly for a while, the protagonist encountered a dog with a broken leg on the street.
He was resting in the alley when the dog walked up to him and lay down for some reason.
The protagonist didn't pay any attention, glanced at it, and then continued to rest.
For some reason, ever since then, the dog has followed the protagonist.
Wherever the protagonist goes, the dog follows.
Once, the protagonist was tripped by a thug on the street.
The thugs laughed beside him, but the protagonist didn't care. After struggling to get up, he wanted to leave.
But the thugs didn't let him off the hook so easily; they followed and tripped the protagonist again.
To the protagonist's surprise, the lame dog barked wildly at the thugs and even adopted an aggressive posture.
A lame dog posed no threat; the thug kicked it once, sending it aside, and then ignored it, continuing to bully the protagonist.
A few seconds later, a dog barked suddenly.
"Woof!"
