Side Story (1): New Year, Same Wishes

"Click-clack~"

"Clang~~"

The offering money fell into the offering box through the gaps between the thin wooden strips. The bell was rang, hands were clasped together, and wishes for the new year were made.

Ring out the heavy bells to dispel last year's misfortunes and welcome the new year.

The fortune-telling place was unattended, but in such a place, no one would be foolish enough to try and get a cheap bargain of a hundred or two yen.

Insert a coin and draw a fortune stick that predicts your fortune for the new year.

After the drawing was completed, the group huddled together, opening it with a mix of anticipation and trepidation.

"Ai, what's yours?" Kōyū leaned close to Ai, his eyes darting back and forth to the fortune slip in her hand, but he didn't manage to get it.

Turning her body to avoid Kōyū's gaze, Ai glanced up at him before lowering her head again to look expectantly at the fortune slip.

Upon opening the fortune slip and seeing the word "Great Fortune" on it, Xiao Ai's slightly furrowed brows instantly relaxed.

Just like someone who has obtained something they love and wants to show it off to others, Ai unfolded the divination slip completely so that Kōyō could see it clearly.

"Great luck! Not bad!"

"Maybe something good will happen to you soon."

Seeing that Ai was so lucky, Kōyū was also quite happy.

The content of the fortune slip does not guarantee that your luck in the coming year will be exactly as described.

Even great fortune can turn into misfortune, and conversely, great misfortune can lead to good fortune.

But no matter what, being able to draw a "great fortune" on the first shrine visit of the new year is a good start to the new year, definitely a good thing.

"It has already happened."

After thinking about it for a moment, Ai gestured to the unopened fortune slip in Kouyu's hand and asked, "What about yours?"

"Let me see."

After opening the fortune slip and reading its contents, Kōyū smiled and showed it to Ai, saying to her:

"Just like you, great fortune."

"It seems like something good might happen to you soon too," Ai said to Kouyu, turning her gaze away from him.

"It has already happened."

"There are quite a few," Guangyou said, counting on his fingers.

"The basic resolution of the distillery issue is one thing, the antidote development is progressing smoothly, being able to completely let go of the past is another, and there's more..."

As he counted, Kōyū pointed to Ai standing next to him and continued:

"And the fact that you're by my side counts as one of those things too."

"Looks like the fortune slip was pretty accurate." Ai's lips curled up slightly, then quickly returned to normal. "Mine came true too, just like yours."

“It really is very effective.” Kōyū looked at Ai, then looked down at the fortune slip in his hand, and said, “Another good thing has happened.”

What did you guys draw?

At that moment, Conan walked over to Kousuke and looked at his fortune slip. "Great luck! You're in good fortune!"

"And you?" Kōyū asked, noticing that Conan's fortune slip was still unopened.

"Isn't this what you just asked for? I haven't watched it yet. Let's watch it now..." Conan said as he opened the app, then stopped talking and opening it.

"Oh? Looks like your luck isn't so good!" Kōyū laughed gleefully, saying, "It's an ominous sign."

He paused for a moment and then said:

"In some ways, you're also very lucky."

"After all, the fortune sticks in this temple have seven levels, and six of them are auspicious, but you managed to draw an inauspicious one. You can't say your luck is bad!"

"I'll just go tie this fortune stick over there," Conan said casually, glancing at the area in the temple where unlucky fortune sticks were tied.

"I feel like the fortune slips here are really accurate," Kōyū said to Conan, stroking his chin thoughtfully. "Your fortune slip might come true too."

"Hey, is it really okay to say that?" Conan looked at Kōyū with half-moon eyes.

"No, I'm not kidding, I'm serious."

This time, Kōyū wasn't joking; he explained it to Conan:

"The distillery is now settled, and all that's left are the remaining rebels, but they're no longer a threat."

"That means you can safely turn back into Shinichi Kudo, so Ran..."

Reminded by Kōyū, Conan understood. He clicked his tongue and nodded in agreement.

"It is indeed possible that this will come true."

"Go get your own fortune slip," Kōyū said, patting Conan on the shoulder. "I need to go draw a love fortune slip now."

After saying that, Kōyū and Ayā went to a place next door where they could draw love fortune slips and inserted coins to draw lots.

Both of them are still very lucky.

The main content of the divination slip can be summarized in one sentence:

"Relationships that have weathered storms become even more beautiful."

I must say, it quite fits their experiences.

After drawing their fortunes and walking a few steps outside, Guangyou and his companion ran into Xiaolan and Sonoko, who had also come to draw their love fortunes.

"Kuangyou, Ai, what did you two draw?" Ran asked curiously.

"Both Ai and I have very good fortune." Kōyū showed the fortune slip he had drawn earlier to Ran and Ai.

"You two are lucky!" Sonoko told them her draw. "I drew Kichi, which is alright, just average."

She added:

"I hope my love life will be very lucky this year."

"I'm from Zhongji," Xiaolan said.

"It seems that Conan is the only one among our group who drew the ominous sign." Kōyū glanced at the place where ominous signs were drawn and saw Conan standing there drawing a sign.

"Looks like the fortune-telling was very effective." Sonoko said, recalling what happened last year. "After all, wherever that brat goes, trouble follows."
