Chen Feng looked at his phone, leaned his head slightly forward, and opened his mouth to take the pastry.
“I ate two on the way. Didn’t you see there are still two missing from that box?” Chen Feng said, swiping up his phone.
"No, both boxes are full. You must be mistaken," Lin Nian said, looking at the two full boxes of pastries with a puzzled expression.
"How could that be? I ate two right after I bought them." Chen Feng sat up as well, rummaging through the box in disbelief.
Only the first box was missing two pieces; Lin Nian had just eaten one, and there was one in his mouth. The other box was full.
"Huh? Holy crap?" Chen Feng subconsciously scratched his head, immediately sensing something was wrong.
He made a mistake; he gave the food he had eaten to Xia Yingying, while keeping the rest for himself.
"Brother, no way..." Lin Nian also realized something and hesitated for a moment before speaking.
"Damn it, I gave the food I ate to Xia Yingying." Chen Feng shook his head and sighed.
"Should we tell her now and ask her to change it?" Lin Nian suggested.
"Never mind, let's talk about it tomorrow."
Chen Feng leaned back on the bed and continued looking at his phone.
After Xia Yingying finished showering, she sat on the bed, picked up a box of pastries, and opened it with great anticipation.
But when she opened it, the scene inside immediately stunned her.
The pastries were neatly arranged, but two pieces were missing.
Xia Yingying looked puzzled, but after a moment's thought, she immediately understood what was going on.
"You, Chen Feng, are you cutting corners when giving gifts these days?" Xia Yingying snorted, somewhat annoyed.
She picked up a piece of pastry and put it in her mouth to taste it.
"Mmm~ Delicious."
Xia Yingying said with a satisfied look, her angry expression vanishing instantly.
The next evening, Chen Feng called her downstairs as usual, and she instinctively went downstairs when she heard his voice.
But when she turned around and saw the pastry box, she let out a soft snort and went downstairs with a stern face.
She wasn't actually angry, but for some reason, she inexplicably wanted to pretend to be angry, and she didn't know why.
Chen Feng went downstairs with a stern face. He was used to Xia Yingying's expression; he greeted her with the same look every day.
"Bring me a pot of tea. I brought my own tea leaves this time," Chen Feng said, waving the tea bag in his hand.
Xia Yingying remained standing at the top of the stairs, staring at him with a cold expression.
"What are you doing?" Chen Feng blinked. He had already realized what was going on, but he pretended not to know.
"What do you think?" Xia Yingying asked indifferently.
"I don't know, how would I know why? My period started today," Chen Feng asked tentatively.
Upon hearing this, Xia Yingying immediately glared at him, causing Chen Feng to quickly look away.
"You're really going too far. Now you're even taking two of the pastries you gave me, huh? Why don't you just finish them and give me the box back?" Xia Yingying snorted.
"It's too sweet, I can't eat that much, so I brought you the leftovers..."
Chen Feng said with a grin, but seeing Xia Yingying's increasingly cold face, he quickly stepped forward to coax her.
"Just kidding, why are you so easily amused? I just took the wrong one. I meant to leave it for Lin Nian, but when we got back, haha, the box was full of food, and the ones we'd already eaten were with you."
"I'll make it up to you next time. Would I be so heartless as to take two of them away? They were bought especially for you."
"Go boil some water, I'm thirsty," Chen Feng said, gently nudging Xia Yingying.
Xia Yingying turned around and glared at him fiercely before reluctantly going to boil water, but her expression was completely different from her inner thoughts.
And so, Chen Feng spent the rest of his time there, digging for ore at the edge of the mining site.
Xia Yingying would also buy too much groceries every few days, always saying the same thing.
"Eat up, it's a waste if you don't, otherwise we'll just feed the rest to the dogs."
Chen Feng couldn't help but smile at this, but didn't expose her.
There's no dog here. Why feed a dog? You might as well just say you're feeding me.
Sometimes when Xia Yingying buys some fancy dishes, Chen Feng usually cooks them himself.
For example, Xia Yingying prepares dishes like sweet and sour pork, braised pork slices, and bok choy.
The two of them were getting along better and better, while Lin Nian, as an observer, saw everything clearly.
He always felt that their relationship wasn't just a simple friendship, and it was becoming more and more... there was a feeling he couldn't quite put his finger on.
Three days before the auction, after dinner, Lin Nian was smoking outside while Chen Feng was inside fooling around with Xia Yingying.
At that moment, Lin Nian received a phone call from his father.
"Dad," Lin Nian said as he answered the phone.
"Xiao Nian, have you been busy lately?" His father's voice sounded tired and heavy.
"It's alright, what's wrong?" Lin Nian suddenly felt uneasy and asked with a frown.
“If you’re not too busy, come back for a visit. Your grandfather suddenly fell ill and was hospitalized. He told me not to tell you, saying you’re too busy out there, but I think it would be better if you came back.” His father took a deep breath and asked.
"What happened to my grandpa?!"
Upon hearing this, Lin Nian was startled and immediately stood up.
"He suddenly fainted while sitting at the door. It was someone from the same village who took him to the hospital and then called me. That's when I rushed back."
"He's awake now after the injection, but his condition is very bad and he needs immediate surgery. I didn't quite understand what the doctor was saying; my mind was completely blank. But the doctor said it seems like there's something in his stomach, and he might not make it off the operating table."
Lin Nian's father's voice was slightly choked, but he was clearly controlling his emotions.
"What did you say? You can't get off the operating table?" Lin Nian was stunned, as if his mind had been struck by lightning.
How could this be? His grandfather was perfectly fine when he came out. His grandfather hadn't moved into the new house, hadn't seen him get married and have children, and hadn't even held his great-grandson.
How could things have turned out like this...?
"Come back," Lin Nian's father said, taking one last deep breath.
"I'll go back right away."
Lin Nian hung up the phone and rushed into the villa. Chen Feng was still joking with Xia Yingying when the door was suddenly slammed open.
"Holy crap, what are you doing? You scared me!" Chen Feng turned around and looked at Lin Nian, subconsciously touching his chest.
Xia Yingying was also startled and couldn't help but take a breath and look at Lin Nian.
"Brother, something's happened! My grandpa's dying!" Lin Nian said, his eyes filled with panic.
"What the heck? Speak slowly, what's wrong?" Chen Feng stood up instantly upon hearing this, his expression extremely serious.
"My grandpa fainted in the yard and needs to have surgery. My dad just called me, and I have to get back right away," Lin Nian said urgently.
"I understand. Don't worry, a few more minutes won't make a difference."
Chen Feng pulled Lin Nian over and made him sit down. He straightened his clothes and took out his phone. Panicking wouldn't help; only calmness could solve the problem.
"I'll transfer you 500,000 yuan first. I reckon your dad doesn't have much money on him. Transfer 200,000 yuan to him now and tell him to tell the doctor to use the best medicine and supplies. Do you understand?"
"Okay." Lin Nian nodded repeatedly upon hearing this, immediately took out his phone, transferred money to his father, and then dialed the number.
