“Your great-grandfather didn’t taste the soup, so I reckon it’s still warm,” Li Chunlai said with a laugh.
“No,” Chen Feng said.
"Why would you dig up someone's grave? Didn't your great-grandfather see the tombstone?" Qi Minglin asked, puzzled.
"It's quite a coincidence that the village chief's mother died suddenly, and the one who usually carves the epitaph went to visit his father-in-law."
"They originally planned to erect a monument later, but before they could, my great-grandfather dug it out," Chen Feng said with a laugh.
"So what happened after that? Your great-grandfather didn't have anyone beat him to death?" Qi Minglin asked.
"What could we do? When no one was around, my great-grandfather put the coffin lid back on and buried it all over again."
"In the rush, my great-grandfather's hand trembled and he spilled half of the soup in the earthenware pot. It startled him, but he didn't care and just threw the pot and lid back."
“Originally, things would have been fine at this point. When the village chief erected the monument, he wouldn’t have noticed, and the matter would have just passed.”
"And as luck would have it, another mishap happened," Chen Feng said, slapping his thigh.
"What happened now? Did someone see you?" Qi Minglin's curiosity was piqued again.
"No, but the village chief's father died three days later because of excessive grief. According to local custom, when someone dies, their kneecap is dug up, which means they dig up his mother's grave and throw his father in there."
"There were so many people at the funeral that day, and then when the grave was dug up, everyone was shocked," Chen Feng said.
Needless to say, when the village chief opened her mother's grave and found that the coffin had been dug up, how could he not explode?
Li Chunlai and Qi Minglin could both imagine how suffocating that scene must have been.
“Let me tell you, my great-grandfather was trembling with fear when he was in the crowd. He had even packed his luggage and was ready to run away, afraid of being discovered.”
"The village chief jumped down with a livid face, looking at the coffin with its corner pried open and the soup with its lid opened."
He pondered for a long time, then looked up and spoke with an incredulous expression.
"My mom was thirsty, so she actually climbed out to drink the soup herself?"
"Let me tell you, when those words came out, everyone was terrified. They had only heard of the story of a dead person coming back to life, but they had never actually seen a dead person come out of thirst, drink some soup, and then go back."
"My great-grandfather reacted quickly; he immediately ran out and shouted."
"Village chief, this is the soup your mother loved to cook, it's a miracle!"
After hearing this, the village chief was instantly moved to tears and immediately knelt down and kowtowed three times.
Then he asked his wife to preside over the burial ceremony, and he went home to cook another pot of soup for his mother to take with him on the way.
"this…"
Qi Minglin was speechless after hearing this.
"Although this village chief is a bit dim-witted, he is quite filial."
"And then what? Did you just let it go?" Li Chunlai asked.
"Later, my great-grandfather was discovered, and the village chief threatened to kill him. So my great-grandfather fled with his family overnight," Chen Feng said casually.
"Huh, didn't we manage to fool them all? How did we still get caught?" Li Chunlai asked, puzzled.
“My great-grandfather was also indebted. When the village chief brought over the soup, he said something from the side.”
"What wonderful dates and goji berries! It's such a waste to just bury them like this."
"The village chief was dumbfounded. He had specially obtained the jujubes and goji berries from elsewhere, and no one in the village knew about them. How did you know that there were jujubes and goji berries in the burial soup?"
"At that time, my great-grandfather and the village chief stared at each other, and the scene was quite awkward."
"Later, if it weren't for so many people holding him back, my great-grandfather would have been killed on the spot by the village chief. He was only twenty-four years old," Chen Feng said with a shrug.
“Your great-grandfather… wasn’t very smart either.” Qi Minglin shook her head and chuckled.
"All done, let's go." The driver then got into the car, started the engine, and drove off onto the road.
Not long after the car started moving, Li Chunlai and Chen Feng fell fast asleep in the back seat. Qi Minglin wasn't particularly sleepy, but hearing their snoring made her eyelids droop.
Putting down her phone, which she was using to look at documents, Qi Minglin closed her eyes and fell asleep.
The three of them slept very comfortably, but the driver suffered the most.
Listening to the three of them snoring, the driver couldn't help but mutter something under his breath.
"Or maybe I should just take a nap too."
The car drove on until nightfall, and Chen Feng, still half asleep, felt the car stop.
"Captain, we've arrived at the service area. Let's eat something before we go, or there won't be any food left." The driver called out to Qi Minglin.
"Okay, let's eat before we hit the road." Qi Minglin stretched, opened the car door, and got out.
When the group arrived at the service area, Li Chunlai looked at the food and asked Chen Feng in a low voice, "So we don't have to pay for it ourselves?"
"Eat whatever you want, they'll take care of it," Chen Feng replied.
"Alright, give me a bowl of meat sauce noodles, and three braised eggs!" Li Chunlai said generously as he walked up to the stall.
The group ate and drank there, rested for half an hour, and then continued on their way.
"Are you planning to travel overnight?" Chen Feng asked as he got into the car.
"Time is tight and the task is heavy. We've already wasted a lot of time, and we can't afford to waste any more," Qi Minglin said, turning the heater up a little.
"Okay." Chen Feng put the wireless earphones on his ears and continued to rest with his eyes closed.
Chen Feng only remembered waking up intermittently twice, both times when the car stopped, probably when the driver was refueling.
When he woke up again, it was already broad daylight, and Li Chunlai and Qi Minglin were both looking at their phones.
"What time is it?" Chen Feng asked, yawning.
"It's a little past eleven. We'll be at the service area for lunch soon. You woke up at just the right time," Qi Minglin replied.
"You can smell it now, can't you?" Chen Feng cracked the window open a crack and lit a cigarette.
Qi Minglin heard the sound of the lighter, glanced at Chen Feng in the rearview mirror, frowned slightly, but did not say anything.
She doesn't smoke and doesn't like the smell of smoke, so the drivers assigned to her are all non-smokers.
Since everyone knows Qi Minglin's habit, no one smokes in her car; in fact, no one dares to.
Qi Minglin saw that Chen Feng had already lit all the cigarettes, so she didn't say anything and let him smoke.
When Li Chunlai saw that Brother Feng had started smoking, he quickly lit one up for him.
To be honest, he had been holding it in for a long time, but he didn't dare to make a move, waiting for Chen Feng to step up.
Hearing the lighter click again, Qi Minglin frowned and glanced at the rearview mirror, her tone somewhat displeased.
"Next time, smoke them one at a time. Who do you want to choke to death if you light them both at the same time?"
"Um... I'll open the window wider," Li Chunlai said with a dry laugh.
Although Chen Feng does smoke, he always blows the smoke out of the window cracks, so the wind blows it all away, and there is very little smell in the car.
