Chapter Twenty-Two: Our Friendship

It suddenly started raining in the afternoon, and the whole city was shrouded in a thin fog.

Chen Wenzhi stood at the restaurant entrance, holding an umbrella and with his back straight.

Under the umbrella, Ying Qian looked up and complained, "Damn, am I the Rain God? Why does it always rain whenever I go out to play?!"

The rest of the people have already gone to Longhu Shopping Mall.

As for the two of them...

“If you remember to bring toilet paper when you go to the bathroom…” Chen Wenzhi paused, his brows furrowed, and his tone became extremely serious: “you might not have encountered the rain.”

Ying Qian was speechless, but it was indeed the truth. She crossed her arms and slammed her fist on the ground in annoyance, "I didn't make you wait for me!"

"If I don't wait for you, won't you be furious?"

"Who said that!" she retorted forcefully, but her tone quickly deflated, her voice becoming half its previous volume. "Am I that kind of person...?"

Chen Wenzhi was amused by her appearance and shrugged his shoulders, beaming with joy.

"Mocking me?" She keenly sensed the unusual smile.

He quickly suppressed his smile, feigning a respectful demeanor, and said, "I wouldn't dare."

"Tsk!"

Ying Qian couldn't help but wonder, "Are you possessed? Where did your arrogant demeanor from when I first met you go?"

No, I don't think so.

With that, the two of them headed towards the mall together.

"My white dress is ruined." She stumbled a few times as she went downstairs, her whole body leaning forward uncontrollably.

Chen Wenzhi's breath hitched, and his entire being was on edge. He instinctively rushed forward to protect her.

His hand rested on her lower back.

Ying Qian finally calmed down, patted her chest, and breathed a long sigh of relief.

Chen Wenzhi breathed a sigh of relief, his tense expression relaxing as well, though his heart was still pounding wildly, as if it were about to leap out of his chest.

She lowered her eyes, let out a soft sigh, and continued, "A muddy skirt only for rainy days... I give up."

"It doesn't matter," Chen Wenzhi said calmly. "I won't laugh at you."

“I know—” she smiled.

"If you dare to laugh at me, our friendship ends here!" she said seriously, hooking her two little fingers together as if to break off their friendship.

Chen Wenzhi's smile deepened, his eyes seemingly empty except for her smile and her every move...

He didn't know when it started, but there was someone else in his eyes, and his heart seemed to be filled even more by this person who had fallen from the sky.

A light drizzle falls, and some people wish time could stand still forever.

Chen Wenzhi received the message from Ren Yi and the others in the evening.

A girl's dream: Where are you all? Want to come eat cake?

Gentle conspiracy: Send me your address.

A girl's dream: OK, OK, you and Ying Qian, come quick!

Ying Qian leaned closer to look, with cream still on her lips, "Going to eat cake?"

There were only a few scraps left on the plate on the round table; an ice cream cake had just been eaten... who would have the appetite to eat cake?

She looked embarrassed: "What should we do then?"

Chen Wenzhi handed her a napkin, saying, "It's okay, no one will blame you if you don't eat."

"Oh." Ying Qian pouted and wiped her mouth with a tissue.

She asked worriedly, "Won't they think I'm being difficult? And then they won't play with me anymore, and they'll isolate me..."

Hearing her worried groans, Chen Wenzhi frowned slightly, put down his phone, and prepared to have a serious talk with her: "Why do you think that?"

Her voice choked, "Won't you feel out of place?"

Chen Wenzhi didn't respond, and seemed a little stunned.

“I have very few friends. Sometimes I have to go to great lengths to please them and maintain the friendship. I used to think that as long as I did what they liked, they would be my friends forever.”

"But I later found out that this was not the case. No matter how hard I tried to get along with everyone, there were still people who didn't like me, would talk about me, spread rumors about me, and make jokes about me. When my parents first got divorced, they always said that I was an oddball."

“Even a casual remark I make will be used by these people to criticize me for a long time. I feel really helpless. That memory is almost entirely dark for me, but I really want some real good friends.”

She paused for a moment, then chuckled self-deprecatingly, wondering if real experiences would touch people's hearts, before looking into Chen Wenzhi's eyes.

His clear eyes seemed to be asking, "Are you my friend?"

Chen Wenzhi's eyes were deep, and after hearing these words, he showed sympathy. He seemed to be in a heavy mood, as if a huge stone was pressing down on him.

“Ying Qian, I can only offer my personal opinion.” He sighed and came to a conclusion, “I think you’re very starved for love.”

Ying Qian was slightly incredulous, but upon closer reflection, she realized there was nothing to refute.

“There’s no need to deliberately maintain a friendship. True friendship doesn’t need any fancy stuff. It’s just that when you’re standing there, she considers you a friend.” Chen Wenzhi softened his tone considerably.

He listened for a while, observing Ying Qian's reaction.

Ying Qian listened attentively, and a hint of enlightenment appeared in her eyes.

"You need to know how to make choices. Some people are just not suitable to be friends. Don't try to please others. To put it bluntly, that's being a sycophant. Mutual support is the best approach. True friends should help each other and lend a hand when you're in trouble, not offer sarcastic remarks."

Ying Qian lowered her head. "I understand."

Chen Wenzhi opened his mouth, looked at her, and hesitated to speak.

She moved a chair next to Chen Wenzhi and whispered, "What about our friendship?"

Her breath gently touched my earlobe, the fine downy hairs tugging at my nerves.

Chen Wenzhi closed his eyes, as if he had been under some kind of spell and frozen in place. He couldn't utter a single word and was inexplicably nervous.

"If you don't say anything, I'll take that as you admitting we're good friends." She straightened up, placed her hand next to his face, and said in a carefree tone.

Chen Wenzhi nodded stiffly, turning his face slightly to touch her icy fingertips. He wanted to experience that feeling of being energized all over his body again, but reason wouldn't allow it.

"Our friendship will definitely last forever!" Ying Qian cheered.

"Um."

The rain that had been falling stopped.
