Zhen Tian heard the rumbling thunder outside and shrank back; there were only a few minutes left before the exam ended. She chewed on her pen, pondering how to run to the school gate in the rain to avoid getting too wet.
The familiar ringing of the bell interrupted her thoughts. Zhen Tian sat in her seat waiting for the teacher to hand in her test paper and answer sheet. After tidying up her stationery, she slowly walked out, partly to avoid the rain, and partly because, due to her special physical condition, she never allowed herself to be in crowded places.
The rain pattered against the windowsill and glass, making a tinkling sound. Zhen Tian glanced outside, then wrinkled her nose in frustration. Well, she knew she'd get soaked no matter where she went. Downstairs, the pattering noise grew louder. Because of the heavy rain, almost all the students who had finished their exams were crowded in front of the door.
Zhen Tian scratched her head, unsure of what to do.
"Sweetie." Ji Yuzhi spotted the bewildered girl at the back of the crowd at a glance.
"Zhizhi!" Zhen Tian looked at him with surprise.
Ji Yuzhi was completely unaware that the murmurs in the crowd had subsided considerably after he spoke. He coldly called out "Excuse me" twice, walked in, and led Zhen Tian out.
"How did you get here? How did you get in? That's amazing! Aren't parents supposed to keep you out of school?" She was still in a state of surprise, chattering away like a little bird that had just learned to talk.
Ji Yuzhi glanced at the not-so-large umbrella, hugged Zhen Tian tightly, wishing he could bury her entirely in his arms, tilted the umbrella towards her, and managed to keep a single drop of rain from falling on her.
Turning around, Ji Yuzhi had already led her to the car.
"Get in the car."
"Oh, okay!" Zhen Tian stepped forward obediently: "Mom and Dad, I've finished my exams!"
"Congratulations, my dear daughter." Dad Zhen pulled out a small toy horn from somewhere and started blowing on it.
"What is this?" Zhen Tian nudged her father, both disgusted and wanting to laugh.
"Yuzhi, get in the car quickly!" Mother Zhen shouted at the top of her lungs, "Why are you soaking wet?"
"Huh?" Zhen Tian then realized that the boy who came out with her did not get into the car with her, but walked backwards instead.
"Only one?"
She rolled down the window, clung to the windowsill, and called out to him.
The boy paused for a moment, then turned around: "Put your head back in, quick."
"Oh." Zhen Tian shrank back into the car.
Ji Yuzhi also got into the same car he had been in before.
"I wonder if the child has taken his clothes off or not." Mother Zhen pinched Father Zhen's arm anxiously.
"Zhizhi still has a cold, how did he get his clothes wet?" Zhen Tian was also worried.
"It's all to pick you up."
Lu Kai pulled out a suit that he always kept in his car and handed it to Ji Yuzhi: "Change into this, otherwise Tian Tian will feel guilty to death later."
He showed his phone screen to Ji Yuzhi, which was full of text messages from Zhen Tian urging him to tell Ji Yuzhi to change his clothes.
Ji Yuzhi remained silent, took the clothes, and changed them in the car.
A moment later, Lu Kai tossed another towel to Ji Yuzhi.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Lu Lin grumbled twice in dissatisfaction: "You really have everything in this car."
The car moved forward slowly.
Ji Yuzhi continued to lean back in his chair and close his eyes to rest.
His thoughts gradually drifted back to the days when he had just moved to H City.
Because of his parents' work, Ji Yuzhi has been moving between different cities since he can remember. In some cities he might stay for a year, while in others he might stay for only a few months.
Therefore, he had been constantly changing schools since kindergarten. He was in third grade when he moved to H City, and he had already completed five elementary schools. This was the sixth. After moving, his parents were still very busy, and he rarely saw them. He also disliked the nanny they hired. After discussing it with his parents, he was given the right to make his own decisions.
I first met Zhen Tian at school, when she had just started first grade.
…………
Everything was unfamiliar to Zhen Tian.
Zhen Tian only stayed in kindergarten for a few days because she couldn't adapt to not having her parents around. As soon as she was handed over to the teacher, little Zhen Tian would start crying loudly if she couldn't see her parents for even a moment.
Zhen Lei was young then, and had just had a child, whom he cherished like the apple of his eye.
He couldn't bear to hear Zhen Tian crying. He ran back and looked at his youngest daughter through the glass. Seeing her crying pitifully, reaching out her arms for a hug, made his heart ache. Zhen Tian cried inside the glass, while Zhen Lei cried outside. Lu Ti's head throbbed with pain from crying.
In the end, it's unclear whether Zhen Tian couldn't bear the separation or Zhen Lei couldn't bear it, but Zhen Tian spent her kindergarten years happily at home playing with her parents.
When Zhen Tian started elementary school, she still couldn't adapt and cried terribly, which affected all the children in the class, causing them to cry as well. The homeroom teacher had no choice but to ask Zhen Tian's parents to take turns staying at school to help her adjust.
Surprisingly, Zhen Tian adapted quite well, and in less than half a month, she no longer needed her parents' company.
Zhen Lei started complaining every day about being abandoned by his daughter again.
During class, Zhen Tian suddenly stood up without warning, took an apple from her desk drawer, and started eating it while looking around. She even wandered around and interacted with the other children. The homeroom teacher was utterly exasperated. It took another half a month to get Zhen Tian to understand that she shouldn't walk around during class.
Zhen Tian loves to laugh and is very cute; all the children in her class like her very much.
The calm lasted until the second semester of first grade.
Mischievous little boys in school often liked to make little girls cry.
Zhen Tian couldn't escape it either.
She sat quietly and listened to the lecture.
The little boy behind her and his deskmate secretly tugged at her ponytail. Zhen Tian didn't react.
The two little boys chuckled and secretly picked up their art scissors, starting to haphazardly snip at the ends of Zhen Tian's hair. Afterward, they were quite pleased with their work.
By the time the other girls pointed out that Zhen Tian's hair looked wrong, it was already the next class. The girl, who always cared about her appearance, couldn't hold back any longer. Her wailing echoed for three days straight. Ignoring the fact that it was class time, Zhen Tian ran straight to the second-grade section to cry to her brother. She was sobbing uncontrollably, pointing only at her hair.
Lu Lin, a second-grader, was the leader of the troublemakers, and he immediately knew his younger sister had been bullied. He told his classmates to find older boys from other grades, while he took his sister and stormed into the classroom.
When the two arrived, the older boys, who were quick on their feet, rushed over. Not long after, their uncle, who was studying at a university nearby, also arrived.
Eight men of varying heights stood in front of the boy who had cut Zhen Tian's hair. Even the oldest of them was only in his early twenties, but it was still quite frightening for the little boy.
Before the older brothers could say anything, they scared the two boys sitting behind Zhen Tian into tears.
