Digging holes with a stick was a childhood pastime that Yue Jiuyue didn't recall. She did remember digging for earthworms as a child, which she did to fish.
An old woman and a young girl... well, she's only middle-aged, so the word "old" doesn't quite fit her yet.
The two of them squatted by the lake and dug a hole. Yue Jiuyue had to follow Xiao Man'er's instructions and dig wherever she was told, otherwise Xiao Man'er would scream and throw a tantrum, and be very unhappy.
Yue Jiuyue felt like she was being manipulated by this little girl.
Aside from being a little annoyed and feeling uncomfortable in the sun, she thought this kind of recreational activity was alright.
Especially when she dug out a clam.
Upon opening it, it was filled with mud and sand, and hidden among the mud and sand was an irregularly shaped pearl!
"Grandma, stone."
The little girl was amazed when she saw these "strange stones".
Yue Jiuyue was also surprised; it was the first time she had ever seen a pearl inside a clam, although it wasn't round yet.
"This is called a pearl, Zhen, Zhu."
Yue Jiuyue taught Xiaoman'er to read the word "pearl," but unfortunately, Xiaoman'er's pronunciation was unclear, and she was also lazy. She only read out the last word, "pearl," and anyone who didn't know better would think that Xiaoman'er was saying "pig." So the two of them started arguing.
"pearl."
"Pearl".
After steaming the cornbread, Liu went out to look for someone and heard her grandmother and grandson muttering to each other, one calling the other "Pearl" and the other "Pig," neither willing to concede to the other.
"Mother, little girl, what are you doing here?"
Liu asked curiously.
Upon hearing Liu's voice, Yue Jiuyue stiffened, then stood up as if nothing had happened and said to Liu:
“My little girl insisted that I make her dig a hole to play with. I didn’t listen to her, so she started making a lot of noise. Just now, she dug out a clam and even picked out a pearl. I taught her to say ‘pearl,’ but she insisted on saying ‘bead.’ She won’t listen to me at all.”
Hearing Yue Jiuyue's "complaint," Madam Liu wanted to laugh but dared not, afraid of angering Yue Jiuyue. She could only agree with Yue Jiuyue and criticize Xiaoman'er:
"Little girl, you must listen to Grandma!"
Little Man'er innocently looked up at Madam Liu, then at Yue Jiuyue, and blinked.
Yue Jiuyue: ...
It made her seem unreasonable.
Yue Jiuyue gritted her teeth, but ultimately said nothing more.
What should she say?
At such an advanced age, acting so aggressively towards a two-year-old toddler doesn't act like an elder at all.
"Once you're done with your work, go take care of Xiaoman. I'm going back to lie down and rest for a bit. I've been squatting here for an hour or two, and my legs are numb and my back feels like it doesn't belong to me anymore."
Yue Jiuyue rubbed her lower back and legs, muttered a few words, and then headed home.
"Mom, let me massage your back for a bit!"
Behind her, Liu shouted something to Yue Jiuyue's back.
"No need, I'll be fine after lying down for a while."
Yue Jiuyue waved without turning her head and stepped into her own front door.
After taking care of her physical needs and washing her hands and face, Yue Jiuyue went back to her room, took out her bed, and lay down to rest.
I never imagined that raising a child would be so difficult!
If anything doesn't go her way, she'll whine and scream. You have to personally accompany her to sunbathe, and you don't even have time to feed her water. You're also incredibly lazy when it comes to teaching her to speak. Yue Jiuyue felt that today was the most patient she had ever been in her two lives.
Yue Jiuyue sighed for a while, and then fell asleep without realizing it.
