Chapter 6 The Kind-hearted Chieftain's Wife

The fourth brother, Lin Chaobei, was left to continue queuing, while the eldest and third brothers went to the place where the villagers said their mother was digging for wild grass.

When they arrived, Yue Jiuyue was resting on a rock, but her hoe was still busy, having cleared away all the grass around her.

"mother!"

Although the two brothers came over and saw that their mother had indeed dug up a lot of inedible weeds, they didn't know how to persuade her. After all, it was because the three of them, as her sons, hadn't tried their best to find food that their mother had to go out and dig up weeds to eat.

"Oh? What brings you here? Perfect timing! Come and help me dig up all this grass, Mother needs it!"

Yue Jiuyue didn't care what her two sons were doing there. She was so tired that her back hurt so much she couldn't stand up. With her two sons digging for medicinal herbs, she could earn four taels of silver in an hour, right?

Wheat is currently worth about 20 to 30 coins per pound. If the two sons dig for an hour, they can probably get about 150 pounds of wheat. Or they can just buy flour, and then she can eat soft steamed buns!

Thinking about food and steamed buns, Yue Jiuyue's stomach rumbled loudly with hunger.

It was just an ordinary steamed bun, which she ate every day before yesterday. Sometimes she would change it up when she got tired of it and eat rice for two meals, and flatbread or steamed buns for two meals. She never thought that one day she would be craving steamed buns so much that she would be swallowing her saliva.

So she urged her two sons to dig faster, making it even harder for them to say what they wanted to say.

Besides, judging from their mother's words, these weeds were useful, so it seemed they weren't going to eat them, which put their minds at ease.

So, the villagers carrying spring water home saw the mother and her two sons digging weeds on the mountain. They were even more disappointed in the two brothers. They had been asked to come and persuade the old lady Lin Yue, but they had joined in the nonsense.

Not long after, the kind-hearted old lady, whose legs were not very strong, climbed up the mountain.

"Her auntie, my eldest grandson told me that you're digging up these weeds here, are you going to cook them at home, or is there some other use for them?"

It's not that I, this old woman, want to meddle, but these herbs aren't something you can just eat casually. A sore throat is the least of your worries; what if you get an upset stomach? Then you'd have to take medicine, and medicine costs money. With that money, we'd be better off buying some food for the family, wouldn't you say?"

This old lady is Wang, the clan chief's wife. Since she married the clan chief, she has never suffered any grievances. Even now, during a famine, her family has no shortage of food. Therefore, she is very easy-going and warm-hearted. She will advise people in the clan whenever they encounter any problems and will lend a helping hand when she can. So the villagers trust her very much.

Including the original owner.

The original owner had also received help from the Wang family, especially when she was first separated from the family. The thatched hut she lived in was built with the help of the Wang family's son. Therefore, Yue Jiuyue naturally did not treat others the same way and was unusually gentle in her tone.

"What brings you here, ma'am? Come and sit down and rest for a while."

After helping Wang Shi sit on the rock, Yue Jiuyue began to explain.

“Auntie, it’s like this. There’s a famine going on right now, and we’re so poor we can’t even afford to eat. I’ve been staying at home these past few days with nothing to do, and I suddenly remembered that when I went to town before, I saw someone delivering medicinal herbs to the clinic. I didn’t pay much attention at the time, I just remembered that they were wild herbs. So I was thinking of digging up some wild herbs and asking the clinic if they would buy them.”
