Chapter 7 One pushed the other up the mountain

"Really? These weeds that even pigs won't eat are medicinal herbs? The kind that can cure diseases?"

Wang asked in disbelief.

"I'm just giving it a try. As for whether it works or not, that's up to the doctor to decide."

Yue Jiuyue looked like she wasn't quite sure either, and to be honest, this performance actually made Wang Shi believe her even more.

"If it really is a medicinal herb, that would be fantastic news!"

Wang was so happy she slapped her thigh. If there really were medicinal herbs among these weeds, even just one kind, then they would be able to get through this famine more easily. Digging for medicinal herbs was an easy job that even the elderly and children could do, and they could earn some copper coins to buy a few pounds of grain.

Seeing that the Lin family patriarch's wife was also fooling around digging up wild grass with Lin Yue's wife, the villagers were very puzzled. They pushed each other up the mountain to find out what was going on.

"I'm just advising Yue Shi here. Everyone has something to do while chatting. This is just a convenient thing to do."

Wang didn't tell the villagers what Yue Jiuyue had explained to her. After all, it was still unconfirmed. If she told them now, it would be fine if it really was medicinal material, but what if it wasn't?

My family has been busy for days, but all weeds are left. Forget about selling them for money, they're really weeds that even pigs won't eat. Of course, no one in the village raises pigs, so who will bear the brunt of the villagers' anger?

Lin Yueshi?

She just wanted to try; no one said it would definitely work.

Herself?

Can she say she's doing it for the villagers' own good? Will the enraged villagers listen to her explanation then?

Therefore, it's better to say nothing from the beginning and wait until things are settled. Even if some people are still dissatisfied, it's still much better than if things don't work out.

The old ladies who came up the mountain to inquire found out that it made sense. When they sat together chatting, everyone had something to do. It would be uncomfortable to be idle all the time, so they had to find something to do.

So, this group of people stayed behind to chat and pull weeds, which puzzled the villagers even more.

Why did they all stay behind to pull weeds? Is there some secret they don't know?

Then, another group of idle old ladies came up the mountain...

Yue Jiuyue felt bad seeing more and more people helping to pull weeds, since all the money from selling them would be hers.

She couldn't sell the herbs openly to Mall 2023 anymore; she would definitely earn far less money. She was certain that the price the clinic would pay for the herbs would be lower than the price offered by Mall 2023.

It hurts!

That means we'll lose a lot of money!

We can buy so much less flour!

How many fewer steamed buns will I have to eat!

Fortunately, the situation ended by noon.

"It's almost noon, isn't it? We should head back."

An old woman covered her forehead with one hand, looked up at the sky, and estimated the time as she spoke.

Upon hearing this, the other elderly women also looked up at the sun, and one by one rubbed their aching backs and sighed:

"Sigh! Getting old is no good. It's only been less than an hour, and my back is already hurting so badly."

"Yes, I'm getting old! I'm useless now!"

The elderly women were filled with emotion.

Back then, these women were just as capable as men, doing just as much farm work as men, and also taking care of household chores like laundry and cooking. They didn't think much of it at the time.

I guess I'm getting old and useless!
