"Ouch!"
The old lady eventually tripped and fell, but then she came to her senses.
It wasn't that Yue Jiuyue wasn't paying attention to where she was going; it was simply that the old lady's legs couldn't keep up, and she tripped over herself.
Where am I?
The old woman asked in a trembling voice.
The old lady was just thinking that if her daughter had married the scholar back then, he would have given their family a high dowry, and they could have built a new house. Her youngest son would have married a girl from town, and her big, fat grandson would have been learning to read and write from the scholar's son-in-law, so he could eventually become a top scholar and marry a princess!
Unexpectedly, before her eldest grandson could even pass the imperial examination with top honors, she suddenly found herself standing on this desolate mountain road, not knowing how she got there or where she was going. She was immediately thrown into a panic.
The main reason is that this is the first time she has walked this road today. When she came, she was so busy being angry with her daughter that she didn't even think to send the new rice seedlings to her mother's house. She had to come all this way to get them herself. She didn't pay attention to what was on both sides of this road.
Suddenly realizing what was happening, I found myself in unfamiliar territory, and I was terrified.
"Mother, I'm taking you home now. We're on our way home, about ten miles away."
An explanation of Yue Jiuyue's good temper.
In other words, the old lady behaved quite well the whole way, even though she was in a daze. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been so easy to talk to, and she might have taken the opportunity to scare the old lady.
"Huh? On your way home?"
The old lady looked at the road ahead, then looked back, but couldn't tell where she was. So she stopped looking and turned around to stare at the basket Yue Jiuyue was carrying.
"You really took that little bit of wild vegetables home for your mother? So stingy, let's see if your sister-in-law will even let you in!"
The old lady got all angry when she heard this.
“Mother, didn’t I tell you? My fourth son was attacked by a pig while fetching water up the mountain a few days ago. He was seriously injured and barely survived. We’ve already sold all the wheat we just harvested, but the money isn’t enough to pay off our debts. We still owe our clan chief a lot of money.”
Although I married into the Lin family, I'm still your daughter. As her mother, you can't just stand by and watch your daughter struggle to afford food without helping her out, can you? Those wild vegetables are truly awful! Not only do they make your throat sore, but they're also bitter. I haven't tasted any real grains in years!
Mother! My life is so bitter! So bitter!
Yue Jiuyue started complaining about being poor again, mimicking the village aunties and grandmas in a affected, affected tone, with her voice taking eighteen turns at the end.
The old lady shuddered. Was this really her daughter who rarely spoke throughout the year? She seemed more and more unfamiliar to her!
"Well, as you know, your younger brother and sister-in-law are the ones managing the household these days. I just want to help you, but there's nothing I can do!"
The old lady was really afraid that her daughter was possessed by something, so she didn't dare to scold her as usual. She spoke calmly and explained herself without caring about saving face.
"Mother! Please help me! We're really struggling to survive. We've been eating wild vegetable soup every day, and our intestines are turning green. Even so, we're almost out of wild vegetables. You can't just stand by and watch us die, Mother!"
While tugging at the old lady's arm and pretending to cry, Yue Jiuyue didn't forget to pull her along as they continued walking forward.
