Chapter 17 The Strong

From a biological perspective, humans are not at the top of the food chain. Walking upright comes at a high cost. While it has increased our intelligence to levels unimaginable to animals, our overall physical fitness has fallen far behind.

Compared with most large animals, human muscle strength is not as good as that of a black bear of the same weight, human explosive power is not as good as that of a cheetah of the same length, and human endurance is not as good as that of most herbivores. A little external injury can make a person lose the ability to move.

Not only that, the bacteria that coexist with humans cannot rely on a single diet to synthesize a comprehensive enough range of nutrients, so humans must be omnivorous. Otherwise, malnutrition will find you, and then you will meet death in a long period of weakness and pain.

Human beings have never been considered strong. From the moment the ancestors of modern Homo sapiens were born tens of thousands of years ago, humans have not been considered strong.

Li Wenjia spent the night in his RV, pondering. He didn't know what to do with the people he protected. He had originally thought that humanity's enemies would come from across the sea, but now it seemed that was not the case at all.

Human beings have always been pursuing the superego. They will fantasize about a self that surpasses themselves, and then use it as a goal, constantly improving themselves, and eventually achieving that possible outcome.

That's the reality.

To circumvent their own flaws, humans created a monster that was far superior to them in every way. That monster was actually quite common, and its name was "civilization."

The enemies of civilization come from civilization.

The enemy of mankind is mankind itself.

For the past few months, Li Wenjia has been fighting people's enemies and he has not felt happy. Admittedly, there is a saying that "fighting with others is endless fun", but this saying obviously has its limitations.

The fun comes from people, not monsters. Monsters can only bring fear, and the more you understand them, the more frightening it becomes.

In fact, what has supported him has always been that belief and that passion to protect the weak.

Difficulties and obstacles cannot defeat the brave, but what should those who follow the brave to cheer them on do?

The dragon slayer eventually becomes a dragon. When the day comes when he himself becomes a dragon, will anyone still cheer for him?

A knight possesses extraordinary skills. When his power is beyond people's control, can he still become a hero admired by everyone?

At one point, Li Wenjia felt very lonely.

There was one less person in the world who understood him. He hysterically opened a tin box, took out the bullet that had pierced his comrade's brain stem, and held it in his palm.

Death gives everyone the final peace, but it also gives every living person endless pain.

He left no final words, not even a suicide note. Li Wenjia wondered if he had prepared anything. Perhaps he didn't want to create problems for the expedition's doctors, or perhaps he wanted to save face for himself. Anyway, the man named Li Qiunuo pointed his service pistol at his own head.

Come to think of it, it was quite difficult for this guy to shoot.

The nurse had just given him a Methylphenidate and a Benzodiazepine in the middle of the night. Logically, he should have slept peacefully until the next morning.

He only had one arm left at that time, with only two fingers on the palm.

Li Wenjia imagined how that bastard was fighting sleepiness and using his less comfortable arm to take things out of the backpack on the bedside table - just like how he looked the last time he was injured.

"Puff~"

Li Wenjia suppressed a laugh.

The rest of the expedition was probably in the same boat. When someone is deeply saddened, they lose control of their behavior and are capable of anything. There's no need to blame them; just feel it.

Of course, it was normal for someone to die on the expedition, and most of the survivors were able to control themselves well. Some of the insensitive ones even said self-deprecatingly that even if their own mothers died in front of them, they wouldn't shed a tear.

Li Wenjia used a bit too much force, and by the time he finally regained control of his hand, the bullet had already been crushed into a pancake. The old-fashioned pistol bullet was still too soft, after all, it was made of precious nonferrous metals.

Considering that the warhead was his brother's relic, Li Wenjia decided to recast it back to its original shape. He got up from the bed and glanced at the electronic watch hanging on the wall of the carriage.

It's already eleven o'clock in the morning. If he hurrys up, he might be able to make it in time for lunch today.

He subconsciously wanted to take the helmet from under the bed, but there was nothing under the bed. He then remembered that he had returned the exoskeleton to the service department after chatting with Lao Ma last night.

There weren't many protective suits left, as he had just missed the supply yesterday.

He opened the car window cover. The tunnel was brightly lit. Several familiar strangers were carrying boxes and walking along the sidewalk, talking and laughing.

Li Wenjia put on a nylon vest, walked through the isolation room in the RV, and took a deep breath of the air in the tunnel. The ash from the mushroom wood mixed with the volatile engine oil suddenly choked his throat.

Beyond that unhealthy mix, there was a strong smell of rust in the air, mixed with some spicy and some sweet, the smell of radioactive dust, which he hadn't tasted for a while.

There were few survivors left in the expedition, breathing the same air without protection as he did. Of course, perhaps he was the only one completely immune to this radiation. Several others were now suffering from severe radiation lung disease, and their names would soon be written on Lao Ma's list.

Li Wenjia had some suspicions about his own health, but they were superficial. He hadn't mentioned the potion to anyone, and this secret would probably never be revealed.
