Chapter 17 The Strong

He walked north along the tunnel to the end of the convoy, and then knocked on the hatch of a multi-purpose truck. Here was the expedition team's mobile factory, and many of the raw materials recycled along the way were gathered here.

Due to energy and material constraints, this facility doesn't mass-produce a wide range of equipment. In other words, it can only be used as a temporary stopgap, crafting common replacement parts and consumables. While metal can be smelted, the energy consumption is generally beyond the reach of the average person.

But now, everyone in the expedition is about the same.

"What do you want to change it to?"

"Add some spice and change it to dog tags."

Ten minutes later, a dog tag with a yellow-orange metallic luster was handed out from the window. It was engraved with the name of its original owner and a serial number.

"Li Qiunuo, A1379. It turns out he's from the second batch of volunteers."

Li Wenjia returned the dog tags to his RV and immediately headed for the supply pick-up point. He had just realized he might not be able to board the supply truck. The moment he stepped out of the RV, he was already on the command platform's AI list of nuclear contamination.

If he wanted to get back to the car now, he would have to go to Medical Cart No. 1 to perform the disinfection procedure.

That disinfection process would waste at least one ton of purified water and require an observation period of up to 72 hours.

Before that, Li Wenjia could only survive on emergency dry food and had no way to take a shower.

However, the situation has changed now. At least artificial intelligence will no longer interfere with his food and drink. The Rat Village cafeteria is next door. Maybe he can try barbecue there?

The People's Army will not take a single needle or thread from the masses for free. Li Wenjia once again approached the chief of Rat Village.

"Barbecue? No, no, no, that was a party. We don't usually eat meat. Well, I can't hide it from you. It wasn't a party, but it wasn't too bad. The tribe's attention needed to be diverted, right? At that time, we really thought Xiao Ba would never come back."

"Well, I heard that you are good at slingshot shooting?" Li Wenjia quickly recovered from the disappointment of not being able to eat barbecue, and he began to think about the hitting belt again.

"Want to go out and practice? If you catch some game, we can have a banquet. I can also give you a set of clothes, but where's your armor?"

"when?"

"Morning is best, now is the next best time!"

Changgu didn't say much. He blew a whistle, and immediately a man in a rough fur coat, with his weapons and tools and a young man, came over.

The leather-clad man sorted the weapons into categories and placed them in front of Changgu. Unexpectedly, the weapons were of excellent workmanship.

Changgu picked out two spears, a hunting knife, and a longbow. He didn't take his special weapon, as it was obviously not very helpful for the next task. After he finished selecting, he made an invitation gesture to Li Wenjia, indicating that he should also choose some equipment.

Li Wenjia was familiar with the situation and had wielded even the most crude weapons. He chose two arm-length scimitars, the blades of which seemed to be made of animal bones.

"Good taste. That's the toenail of a pterosaur. We brought it back from the north. And my name is Broken Star." The man in leather put away the remaining weapons, then handed a bag woven from plant fibers to the young man.

"Where are we going?"

Li Wenjia tied two knives to his waist and asked casually.

"We can't go to the north. There is a large group of mutants entrenched in the east. We can try our luck in the west. But we can't cross the line." Shattered Star replied.

"We can go hiking first, and then go to the abandoned city. There is a tunnel in the city that leads to the mine pool, and we can have a shooting competition there." Changgu replied.

As they were talking, several people were led by Changgu through the dark maintenance passage and came to an iron door.

"This was originally our only south exit. We won't be using this route anymore."

Outside the iron gate was a cleared path, flanked by small hills of snow. Peeking out from above the snowdrifts, countless tiny black dots loomed above the distant mountains.

Broken Star stood on the snow pile, felt the air, and gestured to Long Bone.

"He said it will be windy tonight, but it won't snow. He used to work at a weather station," Changgu introduced.

“How accurate is it?”

"It's almost impossible. The climate is completely different now, and experience doesn't work anymore."

Changgu walked in front, Li Wenjia followed behind, and Suixing hung at the end of the group. They followed the path to the main road, crawling along the side for a while, then crossed the road and, using all four limbs, climbed up the hillside.

There used to be a ring road on the mountain, but now it has been buried under the snow and its shape is barely recognizable.

Li Wenjia shivered uncontrollably as he stepped through the thick snow. His body instinctively increased its heat production, but he wasn't actually afraid of the cold. He pulled a piece of compressed dry food from his backpack, crushed it with immense force, and poured it into his mouth bit by bit. The excessive shivering made him feel a little hungry.

"You're eating that synthetic food, aren't you? I'm surprised you can even stomach it. If you ask me, that stuff should be consigned to the dustbin of history."

"It's different from before. It tastes better now. Do you want to try it?"

They all shook their heads. They had all been tortured by that thing during their most difficult times. No one here thought it was delicious, and it would be useless to improve it.

Their luck was not very good. They did not find any trace of the animals until dark. They could only continue west along the path and walked to the edge of the city.
