Chapter 17 The Strong



Only then did Li Wenjia realize that he was walking on a railway line, and this path was the driveway next to the railway tracks.

A steel billboard hung in mid-air, untouched by the nuclear blast's shockwave. Written in white paint on it were large characters: "Wanzhou Welcomes You."

Almost all the buildings in the city had collapsed, and several large craters had obliterated most of the city. The craters had been filled with river water, and the radiation had probably been washed away by the current. The area was frozen, and the white snow obscured the entire truth.

"Follow me, don't go the wrong way, there are a lot of mines here."

At first, Li Wenjia didn't know why the defenders laid mines in the city. It was not until he was blocked by a wall made of flesh and blood that he understood.

It's just a normal clash of crazy mutants against a crazy army.

He recognized the unit's designation; it was probably the second-line force covering the retreat. They were supposed to be the first to evacuate, but for some reason, they stayed put.

Now I know, that's why.

They arrived at an underground shopping street, where many long-dead wounded were frozen in time. There were men and women, young and old, and even some soldiers. Without exception, all had suffered from excessive blood loss.

There were massive injuries everywhere, huge wounds so deep that the bone was visible. Many people were missing arms and legs, and after the medical care collapsed, they couldn't even get clean bandages.

Li Wenjia followed Changgu, stepping over the frozen corpses. The ground was slippery, and the blood on the ground had already solidified into ice.

"Unfortunately, we don't have the men to collect them. They're all frozen solid. As you know in these weather, ice is as solid as concrete."

Long Bones stood in front of a half-open fire door and bowed to the bodies scattered throughout the corridor.

Li Wenjia wanted to say to them, "Your sacrifice was meaningful," but the words turned into a sigh. In fact, their sacrifice was meaningless. They failed to protect anyone, including themselves.

This is the sorrow of the weak, this is the original sin of weakness.
