"I guess so? What's the matter?" Jiang Ling put the crossbow she had demonstrated back on her back. She realized that this guy seemed to have something else to say. If she could get some information out of him, she wouldn't mind chatting more.
"Is that so? That's good, that's good, haha~" Dong Xie scratched his head and let out a meaningless laugh.
Xidu immediately realized what was happening and explained, "Your destination isn't the main station, right? So we'd like to travel with you for a while."
"You should be going to the Green Zone, right?" Jiang Ling guessed a reason. Nowadays, anyone who can afford it likes to go to the Green Zone.
The two men seemed to have seen through their thoughts and immediately laughed. Xidu said, "We have a guide, if you can help?" He winked as he spoke, as if he was sure Jiang Ling would agree.
That was indeed the case. Jiang Ling considered it for a moment before agreeing. She didn't understand why a guide was needed to reach the Green Zone, but since they mentioned it, it meant something unknown must have happened along the way. Rather than rushing to inquire at the main station, she decided to just go with them; it was on the way anyway. Furthermore, she wanted to see what was happening with the "Three Yang Caravan," who had disappeared without a trace for half a month.
Since Jiang Ling had just joined a new group, she didn't experience as many strange feelings during the rest of the journey. Perhaps chatting with them distracted her, or perhaps it was true, as Xidu had said, that with so many people, there was more energy. Those fears and tensions never came to her again. Humans are social animals after all, and once her social needs were met, she put aside her previous thoughts.
"Ms. Pharmacist, do you care a lot about time? I see you are wearing a watch, which is rare nowadays!" Xidu asked this question while continuing to ride the subway.
"Yes, but I don't care about the exact time." Jiang Ling nodded, then shook his head.
"That won't work. At least we should pay attention to the exact time at certain times!" Xidu objected thoughtfully.
"Why? Now the lights in the station are on day and night. Except when they are broken, people don't know what it is like at night." Jiang Ling was very confused, thinking back to the month she lived in the station.
"Yes, their light is hard-earned, so of course we should turn it on if possible." Xidu blinked his eyes. He was a little dazzled by the lights.
"Anything to say?" Jiang Ling remained noncommittal. She intended to pass the question to someone else.
"You're absolutely right, Pharmacist. You've certainly never seen the surging energy flowing through the coolant in a reactor. Those glowing red pipes instantly heat the special liquid to a boil, and then the vaporized mist is continuously heated to hundreds of degrees. The gas expands hundreds of times in volume in an instant, rushing out of the sealed pipes and into the distance."
In short, by the time the steam drives the turbine to start generating electricity, hundreds of procedures have already been completed, and the losses during this period are difficult to estimate.
And when that insignificant bit of energy is finally converted into electricity, people call it "infinite." This is one of the reasons why they want to keep the light eternal. Behind every ray of light lies unimaginable loss.
They will collect as much of that supposedly infinite energy as possible, then let people waste it and squander it. Perhaps you think waste is shameful, but what can you do? If you don't waste it, someone else will. Because in the eyes of most people, that energy is infinite, and they can't use it up even in their lifetime.
In fact, they also expect people to waste, because that will in turn force them to demand more energy, so that people will have sufficient motivation to support them in researching more efficient machines and equipment. This is another reason why they want to keep the light eternal, because the light illuminates the way forward. . . .
So you see, they keep the lights on, making it impossible for people to distinguish between day and night, but they are recording consumption every minute and every second. For those who cannot see consumption, time is meaningless to them, so they do not need to record time;
For those who focus on consumption, light is meaningless to them, because they only need to remember the time. This is my answer. I hope you can know it when you need to know the exact time, because it may be very important to someone!
Xidu said a lot of things, but these were the only things Jiang Ling was interested in. It seemed that this new stranger had equated consumption with time, so she didn't refute him.
She summarized his words a little bit, and it became easier to understand immediately: some people's time is meaningless, but they are still consuming endless resources; while others are creating value, but their time is running out.
He didn't summarize his remarks; he simply recounted the phenomena. But Jiang Ling had already grasped what he was trying to say, summing it up in one sentence: "Development problems must be solved with development, and you must remember that there are problems here. Don't be deceived by beautiful appearances!"
Jiang Ling didn't intend to obey him. She was an adult, too, and didn't need to be taught or educated. This world wasn't about beauty or ugliness. To her, it was just endless unknowns and adventures waiting to be explored. She wouldn't be deceived by appearances, because they were all part of the world. She would choose to accept them, regardless of whether they were inherently good or bad. If they were bad, she would at most try to change them. So she replied, "Okay, I'll remember them all!"
