"What do I want to do?"
"Yes, to be precise, it's what you want to do." Lin Ke added, "You came all the way here and suffered so many casualties. You're not here to seize territory, are you?"
Li Wenjia touched his chin and said, "No, we won't do that, but some people will do that. History has proven this."
"History? Whose history?" Lin Ke rested his head on his palm. "The oldest data I have can only be traced back to fourteen years ago. They cut off the network before I was born. I've looked through everything here, but I can't find the history you mentioned."
“What you see is the history of the victors,” Li Wenjia replied. “What I want to seek is the history of the people.”
"The book says that it is the people who create history. Am I also considered a member of the people?" Lin Ke asked.
It fully understood all the abstract nouns so far, so Li Wenjia fell silent.
Asking whether a robot is considered a people is like asking an alien if it is considered a people. Or to put it more broadly, to what extent does something similar to humans need to be called a human?
Are people in a vegetative state considered human?
Is it still human if you only have a brain left?
If a computer is transplanted into a person's body, would it be considered human?
Li Wenjia replied vaguely: "You inherited a part of the people, so you are also a part of the people."
"So, you want my history?" Lin Ke tilted her head to the side, her eyelashes fluttering slightly. "How much history do you want?"
Li Wenjia blurted out: "Everything of yours!"
He regretted it the moment he said it. Thinking back, why did these words feel so ambiguous? He felt his blood surge, and a blush spread across his face. He hadn't prepared for this feeling; it all seemed to happen suddenly, and it all seemed to flow naturally. Simply put, it was love at first sight.
Is this what it feels like to be in love? Why would he fall in love with a robot?
Perhaps it was that robot that had been guiding him from the beginning to the end - from the initial encounter, to the present, and to the not-too-distant future, everything was under its control?
How smart does this robot have to be to be able to string all these things together?
And what kind of future does it see?
Lin Ke smiled and it nodded.
"I know everything." It stood up. "It's getting late. They'll be making some moves tonight. Let's talk while we walk. Friends? No, that's too formal. We should call each other comrades!"
"Hello, Comrade Lin Ke!" said Li Wenjia.
"Hello, Comrade Li Wenjia! Please come in!" Lin Ke said.
They left the dormant room side by side, and there were more than a dozen similar dormant rooms around. One couldn't put all their eggs in one basket, especially since these were human lives at stake.
They passed through several tunnels, turned a few corners, and arrived at an ecological chamber with red and purple lights. This room was already crowded with all kinds of mutants. Those bizarre fungi and plants had built a strange ecosystem here.
Li Wenjia's gaze passed through the fluorescent plant leaves and saw a human corpse hidden deep inside.
Several mushrooms grew on the corpse, their hyphae covering all exposed parts. The corpse clutched a pistol, but the pistol had been completely corroded by some plant. The plant's roots were still there, forming the shape of a pistol.
Li Wenjia stopped and looked at the corpse for a few seconds.
"Do you still know his name?"
"No, he doesn't have a name." Lin Ke leaned against the wall. "Did he run here later, about a month ago? His name is not in my database. Do you know him?"
Li Wenjia shook the body like a rattle, and no matter who took over, no one would be able to recognize it.
"I wasn't here at the time. It was the security program here that did it." Lin Ke showed an expression of astonishment. "I guess he's related to the 'new government' in the northwest. I've received a lot of clear text communications recently. Do you want to listen to them?"
Before Li Wenjia could answer, Lin Ke played the sounds on his own:
"Our Sixth Brigade has inflicted heavy losses on the southern bandits for sixty miles. The leader, Juan, has been killed by our army, and the remaining bandits have fled to the east and west. What a joy!"
"The remnants of the enemy army fled to the southwest in a desperate state. The bandit leader, Hu An, was killed by our troops on the 3rd, and his deputy, Lu Nanhua, was also killed in the explosion."
"The enemy didn't know we were going to attack from the surface. Bandit leader Juan was definitely hit by the bomb and would be killed without a doubt."
Why did it feel so familiar? Li Wenjia was completely baffled: "Who is this 'Huan'? And are these messages from the same day?"
"I don't know." Lin Ke stopped playing and replied, "These messages span a long period of time. The earliest one was recorded by the administrator here in June; the latest one was just last week. If what they said is true, Juan has died 71 times so far. Maybe he's the same as me! If possible, I really want to meet him and talk!"
"No, he's different from you." The wrinkles on Li Wenjia's forehead formed a "川" shape. "Instead of going to meet him in person, why don't you come to my house? My house is quite big."
"Okay!" Lin Ke agreed immediately.
"You really agreed?" Li Wenjia said in disbelief.
"Yes." Lin Ke pointed at the data disk on his body, and his light blue eyes became deeper. "It told me. Your home may be really good, much better than here."
