Chapter 2 Trouble at the Door

Two men in suits, ties and sunglasses calmly sat down opposite Jiang Ling and placed a folder on the dining table.

They did not alarm the people around them. As if they knew Jiang Ling, they took off their sunglasses on their own, revealing their golden pupils that had been blocked.

"Interesting!" Jiang Ling crossed her legs under the table, put down the spoon in her hand and said, "I think you've learned your lesson this time."

Just now, when their figures crossed paths with Jiang Ling, their spiritual powers burst out slightly, blocking Jiang Ling's detection.

"We've read the report about you." One of the expressionless faces replied.

"Oh? Since you know everything, why are you still staying here?" Jiang Ling asked.

"This shouldn't affect your peaceful life," another ordinary-looking person replied. "And from what we know, you're actually quite curious about those secrets, right?"

Jiang Ling pretended to be angry and asked into the microphone, "Lin Yi? You did it?"

"I'm not here! There's no one here!" Lin Yi replied.

"Okay then." Jiang Ling straightened her legs, propped up her chin with one hand and said, "Let's talk. What do you want to talk to me about?"

The two smiled at each other, and the expressionless man tapped the folder on the table with his hand and said seriously: "The contents are all in it."

The next moment, the blue folder slid from one side of the table to Jiang Ling's side without any wind, and then opened itself.

She glanced at it and then yawned.

"You've got the wrong person, haven't you?" Jiang Ling said. "Although stargazing is my dream, I can't do something this dangerous!"

"If there are no problems, we can leave now," the ordinary-looking man said. "We've already sent someone to sort out the things in your room. Don't worry, we guarantee it will be exactly as it was when we get there!"

Jiang Ling nodded, returned the folder, and said, "Wait until I finish lunch."

The brief exchange of high IQs didn't seem to affect her energy-boosting mood, but that was actually her disguise. The two people opposite her clearly understood this, so they didn't expose her little trick.

Although the contents of the folder were slightly different from what Lin Yi said, it was not a big deal.

Jiang Ling just couldn't understand their ultimate goal.

The purpose of selecting astronauts is simply to increase their chances of survival when they risk their lives. Otherwise, why invest so much manpower and resources in training them? But the problem now is that they don't even have the qualifications to risk their lives—there are still many killer satellites lurking in orbit. Even the bravest of individuals can't withstand the criticism of weapons, right?

So, are those reserve astronauts just a talent pool, destined to remain underground forever? Or have they found a way to counter space-based laser weapons?

It's really funny to put it this way - they haven't even figured out how to walk, but they're already thinking about how to take off.

After a while, Jiang Ling was taken to a meeting room in the military camp on the third underground floor. It seemed that this was their temporary gathering point.

There were many folding chairs in the conference room, and several seats were already occupied. Jiang Ling casually chose a seat in the back row.

She was observing those people. Not all of those who arrived here first were so-called psychics. This was normal. According to Ruan Danxin, psychics were a rare species even within the cult, not to mention those who had received gene stabilizers.

Likewise, those people were observing her subtly. After all, this guy's clothes didn't fit in with them. He looked like he had just gotten out of bed. And now, she yawned again.

Jiang Ling didn't find anyone familiar among them. Living as a useless person in Jinling Station, it was impossible for her to know many people. So, lacking interest, she quickly leaned back in her chair and dozed off.

After a while, or perhaps the next moment, several powerful bass voices broke the noise in the conference room.

"One, two... thirteen, fourteen. Are there enough people? Your request is too high. I can't provide more at the moment, and we still need them in the defense area here."

"It's a little less than expected, but it's done. What do you say?"

"Look, he's sleeping soundly in the innermost room!"

"Uh, okay. Are you guys in a hurry?"

"We'll give you two minutes at most. The main reason is that the train has already stopped and we don't want to be criticized."

“That’s enough!”

A sturdy middle-aged man with a star and a pair of wings on his shoulders walked from the door to the front of the stage. He didn't make any unnecessary movements, just stood there, and the room fell silent.

His expression changed several times, as if he was trying to form his words, but in the end, nothing came out. Everyone here basically knew what they were supposed to do, so there was no need for him to say anything polite. And because of confidentiality regulations, there were some things he couldn't tell them. Besides, the next time they met, it wasn't certain who would be the superior. How awkward would that be?

So, his eyes lingered on each person's face for a few seconds, as if he wanted to remember their appearance.

Finally, he asked everyone, "Are you all ready?"

"Always be prepared!" Except for Jiang Ling, the emotions of those people seemed to be infected, and they all stood up and shouted.

He nodded towards the door, then waved his hand: "Let's go!"

Everyone spontaneously lined up at the door, with Jiang Ling, looking gloomy, lagging behind. She had no idea this would happen; she should have changed into something more formal.
