Chapter 132: Past Events on Mars (Excerpt)

It’s hard to believe, but the title of this novel should have been on the cover of my famous thesis—if I hadn’t been persuaded by my advisor.

Now that I think about it, my advisor's words actually made sense. After all, the name is too ambiguous to be used in a rigorous academic paper. The story of Mars I want to tell isn't about human history, the planet Mars, or the other races that established civilizations there.

It's just a story.

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to complete this story before I retired, and now there is a high probability that no one will be interested in this story - it will be frozen in the short term, and only after a thousand years may someone dig it out of the dust.

I guess I will be no longer alive by then, so I want to tell the story clearly now and clear up the misunderstandings between the lines.

. . . . . .

Long, long ago, the world was shrouded in a vast ocean. Desolate and lifeless, it existed in its most primitive state. This ocean was later called the Eternal Sea. The Eternal Sea is so called because, from afar, each wave appears to move in a straight line at a constant speed. But upon closer inspection, the waves vanish, replaced by dazzling diamonds.

This vast ocean is so boundless that anyone sailing on it would be completely unaware of the passage of time. The water is transparent and colorless, so anyone sailing on it cannot tell whether they are submerged or not.

Of course, at this time there were no ships sailing on the Eternal Sea, and the people who drove these ships had never appeared - at least for future generations, they did not exist.

Time slipped away silently, and after an endless eternity, a flat, uniform continent suddenly appeared on the surface of the ocean. The people who lived there called it the Homogeneous Continent. As the name suggests, the Homogeneous Continent's material structure is identical everywhere. Its purity and uniformity are its only two advantages. It is so pure that one can understand the principles of the continent from any point of it. It is so uniform that one can see from any point of it into another.

This continent lacks privacy, allowing everyone to understand everyone else's thoughts. This simple world only breeds simple characters. They are happy, never pondering the origins of the homogeneous continent or its future. They live a carefree and blissful life, with no desire to explore the Eternal Sea or reshape the continent.

So the sudden change caught them off guard, and they said almost nothing about the disaster before disappearing in the long river of time.

Later people learned that the homogeneous continent collided with another continent, causing various changes. In contrast, the Eternal Sea was not so boring after all.

The changes blocked communication between people, making them isolated for a long time. Apart from staring at the Eternal Sea every day, they could only try their best to explore other things around them.

During the changes, an animal that was good at running was discovered. People domesticated it and called it "chariot horse".

With the advent of horses and carriages, the way people traveled changed completely, and the urge to travel to distant places was fascinating.

But traveling across the New World was a dangerous undertaking. Mountains obscured distant views, making it difficult to detect approaching dangers. Canyons attracted galloping vehicles, and the slightest inattention could lead to shattering at the bottom. The collision of continents complicated everything, requiring constant adaptation to these complex changes to avoid being overwhelmed by the complexities. Ultimately, through continuous effort, the New World was conquered and named Universal Continent in honor of the first adventurer to map its entirety.

Afterwards, people established the first kingdom in history on the Universe Continent, known as the Inorganic Kingdom.

Life in the kingdom was stable and improving, and everyone could find their own hobbies. Among them were many who yearned for adventure, so every day there would be unfortunate ones who secretly jumped into the Eternal Sea and lost contact.

To the people of the complex kingdom, the Eternal Sea is an insurmountable mountain and canyon, and even the fastest chariots and horses will stagnate in the water.

Fortunately, the inorganic kingdom is still rich in inorganic stones.

The stones of the inorganic kingdom can be easily processed into various tools, or used as fuel or food - they are much more complex than the materials on the prehistoric homogeneous continent, and therefore have many more functions.

People like to carve on these stones, and occasional creative ideas can give the stones wonderful magic.

As a result, the Inorganic Kingdom possessed more and more magic stones, and the dream of exploring the Eternal Sea became a reality.

Soon, the kingdom's wise men and craftsmen built the first batch of ships capable of floating on the surface of the Eternal Sea, and the sailors and adventurers who operated the ships were also assembled.

The king, wearing a crown and holding a scepter, stood on the city wall facing the dock and said to them, "Warriors, go to distant lands! Take the beauty of this world and exchange it for blessings from afar."

The sailors and adventurers shouted "Long live" in unison, and then drove the ocean-going ships away in different directions in batches.

None of them came back.

It's not that they don't want to go back, it's that they can't.

The ship they were on could only float on the surface, at best keeping pace with the waves. To return, they had to go faster than the waves! They tried everything, but no matter what, they couldn't exceed the speed limit of the waves. Every time they tried to speed up, their ship would become extremely heavy, making the acceleration effect infinitely close to zero.
