The previous project seemed to be the culprit that slowed down the entire process. There were only a few guys who came early and were running furiously on the treadmills. Each of them was flanked by two people in white coats, and they all looked very busy.
Only after Jiang Ling got closer did she discover that the rubber tubes seemed to be sensor circuits, attached to various parts of the trainees' bodies. They were like the tentacles of a mechanical octopus, coiling around the exposed skin of their prey, sensing their struggling heartbeat and breathing.
"Another one, a female comrade!" A man in a white coat operating an instrument noticed Jiang Ling and shouted towards a sound collector.
A small door was opened, and a young aunt popped her head out and waved to Jiang Ling.
Soon, Jiang Ling was stripped naked again. Several aunts applied some cool coupling agent on her body, and then connected the various sensors they had just seen to her surface.
Power-on test, invalid.
Tried again, still no effect.
They checked the instrument, checked the connections of the pipeline, and tried again, but the error message still appeared on the screen.
No, there are still two instruments that are effective, namely the carbon dioxide detector and the pulse recorder, which correspond to Jiang Ling's breathing and heartbeat respectively.
They discussed it for a while and decided to let Jiang Ling check it out on the computer first, so as to avoid working for a long time and not getting any data.
"How fast do you want to run?" Jiang Ling took off her shoes and stepped onto the treadmill barefoot.
"We don't ask you to be fast, we only want to see how far you can run. The time limit is two hours."
"Oh? So what's the maximum speed your machine can handle? How about this? I'll slowly speed up first, and then if you call stop, I'll maintain that speed. How about that?"
Jiang Ling changed from walking to jogging, and the speed displayed on the treadmill gradually increased to 10 kilometers per hour.
"This speed won't work, we need to speed up!"
She nodded and increased her speed to double.
"Can it be faster?"
Her legs and feet immediately became shadowy, and the treadmill made some creaking sounds. The speed displayed on the screen next to her soon reached the limit of the machine's detection, but her speed was still increasing.
"Stop, stop! Slow down! No!" Several aunts shouted in panic.
Jiang Ling immediately maintained her pace, preventing the treadmill's rollers from damaging due to friction and heat. She felt wonderful. It had been a long time since she'd experienced such a relaxing and enjoyable "stroll." Most of the time, the size of the venue restricted her exercise options, forcing her to resort to brief bursts of speeding to eke out a workout.
She maintained a constant speed of 38 kilometers per hour and exercised at the edge of the treadmill's capacity for a full two hours.
Her temperature rose about two degrees, but her heart rate remained essentially unchanged.
The carbon dioxide monitor read zero, indicating she was breathing without consuming oxygen.
