Chapter 19: Choice

Three months ago, somewhere on high ground along the coast of Hang Bay.

Several exoskeleton warriors wearing snow camouflage flipped open the camouflage net and walked out of a half-collapsed hut.

There were six of them in total. Except for two sentries who were on alert, the remaining four were carrying the same box.

Unlike their usual routine, they were unusually nervous at this moment because they didn't have much time.

"How thick is the cloud cover?"

"It's OK for now, but the storm blew some of it away."

"Hurry up, we have to arrive before eleven o'clock!"

In fact, the climate in the northern hemisphere has improved significantly over the past six months. The meteorological department predicts that in a month or two, the nuclear winter will be completely over. At that time, all large-scale operations on the surface will become impossible.

If nothing unexpected happens, this operation may be their last time setting foot on the ground.

It can be said that every storm is a gift from God. This time is no exception, but it is unlikely that there will be a storm of this scale again in the future.

After climbing over several high slopes and hiding in the shadows of the ruins of buildings several times, they finally climbed up the breakwater built before the war.

After running a few hundred meters along the flat embankment, they arrived at a suitable tide monitoring station. Here, they were already deep in the sea, and there were only a dozen meters of wave-breaking rocks ahead.

At a command, several soldiers unfolded the box and began to build a surface observation station on the spot.

To maximize their view, the team leader aimed at the wall on the seaward side of the monitoring station. While the demolition work continued, a series of gunshots rang out across the white plain.

Soon, the entire wall collapsed, revealing an inverted crescent-shaped opening.

The observatory was assembled by these technical soldiers, and a portable military computer was connected to the equipment.

"System initialization..."

"Activating the multi-sighting equipment..."

"Connecting to the main control center..."

"Geodesic calibration in progress..."

Soon, a soldier reported that the observation station had completed preheating. Except for the computer that was still whirring to dissipate heat, the monitoring station fell into silence.

The captain walked to the pillar at the opening, hid himself in the shadow, and looked out from a distance.

There was no movement on the frozen sea, only the rapidly moving sea of clouds in the sky, confirming the passage of time.

"What time is it?"

"Fifty seconds to eleven!"

This was the third time the captain asked this question within a minute, but the team members still answered meticulously, and like the captain, they were also very nervous.

Time seemed to be frozen, and everyone's exoskeleton life monitoring modules showed that their heart rates were too fast.

The storm continued, with strong air currents tearing the clouds into long strips and then rolling them into clumps. This state lasted for some time, but at some point, the wind suddenly weakened, and the dark clouds in the sky completely dissipated within a few minutes, revealing the blue sky and the long-lost sunshine shining on the earth.

Everything was quiet, but the captain's eyes reflected a huge wall of clouds.

Swirling cirrocumulus clouds rolled nearby, their movements revealing the power of the storm as a massive eye emerged.

Two seconds later, their information platform began to be flooded with a large number of interactive text messages of the same level.

Their reaction time was also not slow. After a brief moment of surprise, the captain immediately ordered the technical soldiers to call the main control center.

"Shore-based 05 calling Tianhe, shore-based 05 calling Tianhe!"

"Tianhe received."

"Shore-based 05 reports, Sky Eye has been sighted, please receive the data transmission. Repeat, Sky Eye has been sighted, please receive the data transmission."

"Tianhe understands."

The data transmission took two minutes, and more than half an hour passed after headquarters confirmed it.

"Captain, why haven't they responded yet?" the technician asked puzzledly.

"Don't worry, don't worry. The simulation of the computing host takes time."

Hundreds of temporary base stations transmitted large amounts of data simultaneously, and the metropolitan area mobilized most of the computing power of major sites, barely building a finite element model of the storm within ten minutes.

Surprisingly, and contrary to pre-war data, this storm rotated clockwise.

In the three years since the war, the reflective material humans had spread into low-Earth orbit had been drawn to the equator by gravity. While harmless in itself, the reduced sunlight created a region of extreme cold surrounding the equator, which scientists dubbed the "circum-equatorial high."

Similar to the polar regions, the global climate has been altered there, and the atmospheric circulation is completely different from before. This high-pressure cold air mass moves from east to west, disrupting some of the Pacific low pressure generated at the Tropic of Cancer, thus offsetting the influence of the Coriolis force generated by the Earth's rotation.

Don't underestimate this force; it even slowed the Earth's rotation. In just three years, the length of a day increased to 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 13 seconds, meaning each year now has 367 days. This is likely more significant than the effect of the moon's tidal forces on Earth, which have been affecting the planet for thousands of years.

Scientists don't know to what extent the Earth will slow down, but such changes will soon affect the ecosystems on the surface. It will probably take only a few centuries for the Earth to no longer be the cradle of mankind.

Instead of participating in natural selection with countless mutants on Earth, it is better to find a way to jump out of this cycle of internal circulation!
