"Report a crime? Report what crime?"
Ji Xia was startled. Chen Jing turned around and gently shushed her, and she immediately fell silent.
As she exited the restroom, she saw Chen Jing squinting at the dimly lit aisle of the carriage. Several carefree young men were already sweeping into the carriage with an air of nonchalance.
She tugged at Chen Jing suspiciously: "Who are these people?"
"He's not a good person. Come with me."
Chen Jing shook his head, led her through several carriages, and then suddenly stopped.
Two train police officers in sky-blue uniforms were patrolling the aisle when they saw Ji Xia and Chen Jing. Their expressions hardened: "Comrades, which carriage are you from? Tickets needed!"
"Tickets are available!"
Chen Jing pulled two train tickets from his pocket and whispered as he leaned closer, "Comrade, I'm here to report a robbery in carriage twelve..."
The train police officer checked their tickets and was about to tell them not to wander around when he heard this and paused in surprise.
The middle-aged train police officer looked at Chen Jing and Ji Xia with a scrutinizing gaze: "Okay, we understand, we'll handle it immediately. You can go back now, and don't wander around."
Chen Jing and Ji Xia breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this, said goodbye to the train police officer, and turned to walk back.
Turning around and walking past a carriage, Ji Xia suddenly tugged at Chen Jing's hand: "How many thugs were there just now? Did you tell the train police?"
"He didn't say."
Chen Jing frowned, thinking of the group of robbers he had just encountered. He had noticed at least seven or eight of them along the way, and there were a few more with the train police.
"Let's go back and remind them, so they don't get hurt or injured."
When the two returned to the carriage where they had encountered the train police officer, they found that there was only one officer left, who was leisurely drinking water.
Chen Jing and Ji Xia were taken aback. Weren't they supposed to deal with it immediately? Why are they still here?
Moreover, judging from his leisurely expression, he doesn't look like he's going to work at all.
The two exchanged a glance, and Ji Xia stepped forward in surprise, asking, "Comrade, didn't you just say you'd handle it immediately? When are you taking people over to arrest them?"
The train police officer looked up at the sound and saw that it was the two young men and women who had just reported the incident. He quickly put down his water cup and said, "Young comrade, we know about this. We will handle it. You can go back to your carriages!"
Ji Xia's face darkened: "You said you'd deal with it immediately, but the horse has probably run far away while you're still drinking water. And now you're pulling this stunt? Did you never intend to catch the robbers in the first place?"
Ji Xia was furious, and her voice involuntarily rose a few decibels. The train police officer's face darkened slightly, and he said in a low voice, "Young man, you've already reported the case. You don't need to worry about the rest. We'll follow up on it ourselves."
"You'll follow up on your own? With what means? With words? Just write two reports at the railway bureau and that's it—"
Ji Xia's anger, which she had been suppressing all day, finally erupted. The security on the train was so bad, and the train police, whom she had placed her hopes on, were doing nothing.
She was about to angrily rebuke him when Chen Jing covered her mouth and said in a low voice with a cold face, "Forget it, Xia, let's go. We've done our best."
Ji Xia was pulled back a few steps by him, and whispered in exasperation, "Is this all we're going to do?"
“Let’s go back to the carriage and wake up the passengers along the way. Those people only attack sleeping passengers; they won’t touch those who are awake and not sleeping.”
Having followed Boss Song for several years, Chen Jing has a relatively clear understanding of some current social realities.
After offering some advice to Chen Jing, Ji Xia also sighed.
Well, she knew that public security was indeed poor in this era, so she only dared to vent her anger on the train police, but when she saw the robbers, she didn't dare to say a word.
The two spoke in hushed tones as they left, but after taking only two steps, someone suddenly blocked their path: "Third Brother, Ji Xia, wait!"
Upon hearing this voice, Ji Xia and Chen Jing's eyes widened in surprise.
Most of the lights in the carriage had been turned off, with only a few emergency lights on. In the dim light, a young man dressed in plain clothes stood upright in front of them.
Ji Xia and Chen Jing looked over, their expressions a mixture of surprise and delight: "Fourth Brother, what are you doing here? Aren't you—"
"Third Brother, I heard you married the Ji family girl, is that right? You've finally achieved your wish, congratulations!"
Chen Jun, overjoyed, interrupted Chen Jing, then grabbed Chen Jing's hand and turned to Ji Xia with a chuckle.
"Third sister-in-law, my brother and I haven't seen each other in a long time. Do you mind if we chat for a while?"
"It's alright! You guys go ahead!"
Ji Xia smiled and shook her head. Chen Jun hadn't been home for two whole years since he joined the army.
It's quite an occasion to run into each other on this train and catch up with old friends.
She tactfully stepped aside, and Chen Jun smiled gratefully at her, then pulled his brother's arm and walked to the junction of the carriages.
"Third Brother, what are you and your wife doing here?"
“Your sister-in-law wants to apply to the Academy of Fine Arts, so I sent her to Beijing for the exam.”
Chen Jing gave a brief explanation, then glanced at his younger brother in casual clothes: "Are you on vacation? Are you going home to see your parents? No, this is the train to Beijing."
Chen Jun shook his head and lowered his voice, saying, "Brother, I'm on duty. I'll come home when I have time. I'll rely on you to take care of me usually. Don't worry about what happened on the train. Just go back to your carriage with your wife."
Chen Jing narrowed his eyes: "You are—"
He gestured, but Chen Jun didn't answer. Instead, he shook his head and said, "Don't worry about it, don't ask. Just listen to me. Your mission is to protect your sister-in-law on her way to the capital."
Chen Jing stared at his underling for a long time before finally saying, "Is it dangerous?"
"Third Brother, don't ask—"
The two chatted quietly by the car door for a while before Chen Jing finally returned and silently escorted Ji Xia back to her original carriage.
