Chapter 112 Shadow Canyon

“And,” Eileen continued, a smile playing on her lips, “we also have those who are waiting on our journey to write our own legend.”

The following morning, as the first rays of sunlight pierced through the clouds, they embarked on the only route to the royal city—Shadow Canyon. The canyon was shrouded in mist, obscuring visibility, and legend had it that it concealed ancient secrets and dangers. The group proceeded cautiously when suddenly, a sharp whistle shattered the silence. A group of thieves emerged from the mist, led by a tall, scarred man who coldly watched Alex and his companions, the short knife in his hand gleaming in the sunlight.

"Hey, little guys, lost?" the scarred man sneered. "Shadow Canyon isn't a place for hothouse flowers like you."

Alex stepped forward, the Dragonfire Heart gleaming in his palm. "We weren't lost, we just happened to be passing by. But if you'd like a challenge, we wouldn't mind offering some 'guidance'."

The surrounding thieves laughed, but Alex's composure and the extraordinary aura revealed by Eileen and the others gradually diminished their laughter, replacing it with a hint of hesitation.

"Hmph, arrogant!" The scarred man waved his hand. "Brothers, teach them a lesson in the true rules of survival!"

A battle was about to break out, but at the crucial moment, a clear voice rang out: "Stop!"

All eyes turned to the source of the sound, where a simply dressed girl carrying a wooden staff emerged from the group of thieves. Her appearance caused the thieves to instantly become quiet and retreat to the side.

“I am Leah, the guardian of the canyon.” The girl’s gaze was firm as she spoke to Alex and the others. “Don’t worry, they’re just trying to scare us.”

Leah's appearance surprised everyone, especially Alex, who vaguely felt that this seemingly ordinary girl might be the "key figure" the travelers had been talking about.

“Miss Leah, thank you for your timely arrival.” Eileen bowed politely, her eyes filled with curiosity. “You seem to know us quite well?”

Leah smiled gently, her eyes sparkling with wisdom: "The traveler has told me that your arrival will bring something different. He said that you carry not only your own dreams in your hearts, but also a deep concern for this continent."

The thieves nearby began to whisper among themselves, clearly puzzled by Leah's words and actions. The scarred man wore a complicated expression, finally sighing and sheathing his weapon: "Looks like there won't be any fighting today. Let's go, brothers, don't disturb the Guardian's guests."

Led by the scarred man, the thieves disappeared into the fog, leaving the group and Leah looking at each other in bewilderment.

“Please follow me,” Leah gestured. “There is a secret realm hidden deep within Shadow Canyon that may be helpful on your journey.”

Led by Leah, they traversed the misty canyon and arrived at a secluded cave. The cave's interior was filled with strange runes, and the central spring emitted a gentle blue light, its surface rippling as if reflecting the deepest desires in one's heart.

“This is the Fountain of the Soul,” Leah explained. “It can reveal the deepest secrets of your heart and may also guide you in finding your way forward.”

Erin, Alex, and their teammates took turns gazing at the spring, each seeing a different reflection in their eyes—revelation about themselves, the past, and the future.

As the last rays of the setting sun faded on the horizon, they left Shadow Canyon, their resolve strengthened. When they parted from Leah, she left them with these words: "Remember, true power comes from within, not from external things. When you truly understand this, no one can stop you."

As they resumed their journey, the atmosphere within the group became even more harmonious, and everyone gained new insights from the inspiration of the Fountain of the Soul. As night fell, they set up camp under the stars, gathered around the campfire, and shared their experiences and reflections.

“I never imagined that this journey would be more than just a search for peace; it would be an adventure of self-discovery and personal growth,” Bart remarked.

“Yes, and we seem to be one step closer to those three key figures now.” Leia flipped through the Book of Knowledge, her eyes sparkling with anticipation for the future.

“Whatever awaits us, I can’t wait.” Eileen smiled and looked at Alex. “It’s so good that we can face all of this together.”

Alex held Eileen's hand, warmth flowing between them. "No matter the storm, as long as we stand shoulder to shoulder, no force can separate us."

In the stillness of the night, only the crackling of the campfire could be heard, but beneath this tranquility, a greater storm seemed to be brewing. A deep voice resonated in everyone's hearts: "The bells of the royal city are about to toll. Are you ready?"

The next morning, as the sun shone brightly once more, Alex and his group were ready to go, their hearts filled with renewed energy and purpose. They traversed dense forests and passed through small towns, attracting the attention of passersby.

"Look, it's the group of young men who defeated the thieves yesterday!" John, the blacksmith in town, exclaimed to the villagers beside him, his eyes filled with envy for the young warriors.

“Yes, especially that young man who holds the Heart of Dragon Flame. I heard he has mysterious powers!” a woman chimed in, her eyes filled with amazement.

Outside a tavern they passed, several burly men, their faces flushed from drinking, were talking amongst themselves:

"Did you see that? That girl, with the wooden cane, has an extraordinary air about her! She must be the daughter of some nobleman, here to gain experience while hiding her identity."

"Hey, don't joke around. I bet she's way more powerful than the nobles. Those thieves are like mice before a cat when they see her."

Although not every word of these passersby's conversation reached Alex and his companions, they could sense the subtle spread of their story's influence from the occasional admiring and curious glances cast their way.

As they continued their journey, they came to a vast plain, with the majestic and solemn royal city faintly visible in the distance. Suddenly, dark clouds gathered, lightning flashed and thunder roared, and an unexpected storm seemed to be brewing.

"The weather is changing too fast. Looks like we need to find somewhere to take shelter from the rain quickly." Bart looked up at the sky, his brows furrowed.

“Wait, something’s not right,” Eileen said gravely. She closed her eyes and focused her mind on sensing her surroundings. “There seems to be some force controlling this storm.”

Just as everyone was wondering, a bolt of lightning ripped through the sky and struck the ground not far away. Dust billowed up, and a figure slowly appeared. It was a mysterious person wearing a cloak, playing with a gem that emitted a faint light in his hand.

"Oh? It seems my little gift has successfully caught your attention." The man moved swiftly, landing lightly in front of them. He lifted his cloak, revealing a face that was both familiar and unfamiliar—the scarred man. However, his demeanor was completely different from before, as if he possessed even greater power.

“Scarred man? How come you…” Alex took a step back warily, the Dragonfire Heart spinning in his hand, ready to deal with any possible attack.

“Call me Reynolds. The scars are just the past me. Now, I am the chosen one, possessing the power to control the heavens.” Reynolds proudly displayed the gem in his hand. “You are fortunate to be witnesses to my power.”

The surrounding villagers and travelers fled in panic, leaving only Alex and his companions to confront Reynolds. The thunder in the sky grew even stronger, as if echoing every word Reynolds uttered.

"What do you want to do? Challenging the power of nature will only bring disaster," Eileen warned sternly.

"Disaster? No, this is a harbinger of change. I will use this power to cleanse the world and establish a new order." Reynolds' eyes burned with madness. "Unless you can prove your worth and become a member of my new order."

"We will not sacrifice the balance of the world for our own selfish interests," Alex replied firmly, the Dragonfire Heart shining even brighter in his palm. "Our journey is for protection, not conquest."
