Chapter 197 Fortress

As Chen Ge and his companions finally stepped through the fortress gates, a slight but clearly perceptible sense of relief filled the air. The guards began to systematically arrange the positions of the wounded and check the health of each person. Chen Ge, on the other hand, stood with Tyran and Lionel to continue discussing the specific plans for the next move.

“Based on my previous reconnaissance, this new force is extremely strange and highly dangerous,” Tylan said, frowning. “We need to develop a complete defense system to ensure the safety of everyone here.”

Upon hearing this, various reactions arose from the crowd once again:

"It sounds so complicated. Can ordinary people like us really help?" a middle-aged man asked anxiously, rubbing his hands together.

"Don't worry so much! We have so many brave warriors protecting us!" the woman beside him reassured him, even though she herself seemed very nervous.

"Hey, I wish I could join this adventure!" In the corner, a young man who looked like he had just become a swordsman looked on with envy at the heroes who were talking.

At that moment, a squad leader named Evans approached the three men and gave them a crisp military salute. "General, we have reinforced patrols at all key locations and installed early warning systems. We will respond immediately to any disturbances," he reported to Lionel.

“Well done,” the latter nodded approvingly. “But now is not the time to relax. Everyone needs to remain highly vigilant, especially under these circumstances.”

Just then, a child's clear voice suddenly rang out from not far away: "Mommy, look! That uncle over there is holding a huge sword! Isn't he as powerful as the legendary paladin?"

Hearing the child's innocent words, Mela couldn't help but smile. "The little brother is absolutely right. We are all protecting this world in our own way," she responded softly, giving the child an encouraging wink.

As night fell again, an indescribable heavy atmosphere enveloped the fortress. Everyone knew the real test was about to begin. Suddenly, a deep roar came from the north, echoing through the night sky for a long time. "What was that sound?" someone asked in fear.

Chen Ge quickly realized, "That's the sound of monsters—it seems the enemy has begun their operation. Everyone to your positions, prepare for the impending battle!"

Visker then used magic to transmit the information to the warriors at each post, while Lionel began to direct adjustments to the defensive formation in preparation for a potential attack.

The outside world gradually descended into darkness, leaving only a few stars dotting the black canvas. However, beneath this tranquility lurked an unpredictable crisis…

Just as everything seemed to have entered a state of combat readiness, a nimble soldier rushed into the command post. "Report! Enemy forces have begun to approach, and their numbers are enormous! They are currently launching a fierce offensive against our north gate!" His voice was urgent and trembling.

These words stunned everyone present. A tense atmosphere quickly filled the air. "Everyone prepare for battle! We must defend every inch of this land!" Chen Ge shouted, his eyes gleaming with unwavering determination.

Just then, a familiar yet provocative voice suddenly rang out from outside the door: "Heh, you poor wretches found me so quickly! But tonight is destined to be the last time of your lives..." Nightblade's hoarse voice was terrifyingly powerful, as if it came from the depths of hell.

Meanwhile, Tyran, who was watching all this unfold from atop the city wall, muttered to himself, "It seems the most severe challenge has truly arrived... Whether we can survive tonight is still unknown."

Faced with the sudden threat, Mela gently patted the short sword at her waist and looked at her two friends standing beside her, "No matter the outcome, at least we can proudly say that we fought side by side to the very end..."

Chen Ge turned to look at her, his eyes also revealing an unwavering courage. "That's right. Even on the darkest day, dawn will eventually break. Let us witness this moment together." His words had barely faded when the first booming sound of impact echoed from the direction of the city gate…

As the first wave of attack arrived, the entire fortress seemed to tremble. Boulders and flames streaked across the night, illuminating the resolute eyes of the defenders. Soldiers on the walls brandished their spears and bows, meeting the enemy's advance.

"Quickly, move that boulder over and block the gap!" Tylan shouted. A squad of soldiers hurriedly followed the instructions. A young archer turned to an old soldier beside him and asked, "Uncle, can we... win?"

The veteran smiled, a resolute glint in his eyes. "Son, you just need to trust your comrades and yourself. As long as our hearts are together, there is nothing we cannot overcome."

On the other side, Mela swung her sword to block a small magical beast attempting to scale the city wall. Beside her, Chen Ge was directing the warriors to adjust their defensive line. "Maintain formation! Keep your distance, don't give them any chance!" His voice was loud and clear, bringing a ray of light amidst the chaos.

"I can't believe it's real!" Not far from the city wall, several citizens huddled together watching the battle. A boy was panting with excitement. "I've never seen such an intense battle before. Look over there, who's using ice magic? It's so cool!"

Lionel was leading a small, elite squad toward the North Gate as reinforcements. "Hurry up, we don't have time!" Passing a house, he heard children crying inside. "Don't be afraid," he told the soldiers, "your mission is not only to defend our homes, but also to give these children hope. Remember that."

Nightblade and his men finally came into view. "Hey, old friend, long time no see." The man in black revealed a sinister smile, a long sword gleaming with an eerie light in his hand. "Ready to die?"

Chen Ge stepped forward and responded, "Nightblade, this time we will end your madness. This world doesn't need someone like you."

The confrontation between the two instantly drew everyone's attention. An old man in the distance sighed, "Ah, this is how heroes are made. Just watch, regardless of victory or defeat, today's scene will be recorded in history."

As the battle reached its climax, the sky suddenly grew increasingly dark. A powerful surge of magical energy began to emanate from the horizon. Lionel noticed this anomaly and immediately shouted a warning: "Everyone, pay attention to what's happening up above! Prepare your defenses!"

Just as everyone was on edge, a girl in a white robe appeared in mid-air. She clasped her hands together and slowly began chanting an ancient incantation. With each syllable she uttered, dazzling rays of light converged and took shape in the night sky…

On the city wall, a new recruit, fresh from his first battle, gripped his comrade's hand tightly: "Who do you think she is? Will she bring us good luck?"

Just then, the girl opened her eyes, pointed in the direction of the enemy, and whispered the last word: "Scatter." Suddenly, clusters of dazzling starlight rained down, striking Nightblade's team with unerring accuracy. The earth trembled with a deafening roar.

As the light gradually faded, the once invincible demon army was in complete chaos. "This... how is this possible?" Nightblade stared in disbelief at what was happening before him, a look of panic appearing on his face for the first time.

However, the villain didn't give up. "Haha, do you think you can defeat me like this? The real battle has only just begun!" With that, he turned and disappeared into the night, leaving everyone with endless room for imagination.

Chen Ge looked towards the horizon where the first light of dawn was breaking and smiled slightly. "Everyone, we have achieved an initial victory. But the road ahead is still long, and we must redouble our efforts."

Lionel stepped forward and patted him on the shoulder. “That’s right. Let’s remain vigilant until we win this war completely.”

Meanwhile, a little girl in the crowd looked up at the sky, her eyes sparkling with longing: "When I grow up, I want to be a hero like that and contribute my strength to protect everyone!"

The dialogue concluded this chapter in a way that was both hopeful and slightly suspenseful, leaving ample room for imagination regarding the future development of the story. And the truly exciting chapter is yet to come—the final showdown that is about to unfold…
