Chapter 66 Origins

“That’s right,” the new woman stood up and looked up at the star-studded night sky. “However, before we set off again, there is still a mystery to be solved. Where did that sudden dark force come from? We cannot just be passive guardians; we must take the initiative and trace its origins.”

Upon hearing this, the villagers whispered amongst themselves, a mixture of fear of the unknown and trust and anticipation for the messenger of light and the new woman. An old man approached shakily, holding a tattered map in his hand. "I found this map in the village's ancient books. It marks some ancient ruins, said to be related to ancient dark forces. Perhaps, the answer can be found there."

The messenger of light took the map and examined it carefully. The yellowed lines on the map outlined a road leading to the unknown. "This will be a journey full of dangers and trials, but as you said, understanding and eliminating the root of the threat is the only long-term solution."

The next morning, the team regrouped. In addition to the original members, some brave villagers volunteered to join them, determined to fight alongside the Lightbringers and protect this land together.

The journey was arduous; they traversed winding mountains and crossed turbulent rivers. At each stop, locals cast astonished glances at this extraordinary group, followed by admiration and support. In an abandoned town, an old merchant exclaimed, "In all my years, I've never seen such a united and hopeful team. You've shown me a different world."

After overcoming numerous hardships, the team finally arrived at the entrance to the ancient ruins marked on the map. It was a huge stone gate eroded by weathering, with obscure runes carved on it, seemingly telling ancient secrets.

"Are you ready?" The Lightbringer turned to look at the crowd, his gaze firm and inspiring.

"We are always ready!" the team responded in unison, their voices echoing through the corridors of the ruins, stirring up long-forgotten echoes.

The moment they stepped into the ruins, the air grew heavy, and an indescribable sense of oppression made everyone unconsciously hold their breath. As they walked, they came to a huge hall filled with mysterious machines, with a crystal ball emitting a dim light floating in the center.

The messenger of light slowly stepped forward and reached out to touch the crystal ball. Instantly, scenes flashed through his mind—ancient wars, the birth of dark power, and the heroic ancestors who sealed it.

“So that’s how it all started…” The Lightbringer took a deep breath, turned around, and said to his companions, “We are not facing a simple dark force, but an ancient evil that has nearly destroyed the world in history. But believe me, as we have proven countless times, light and wisdom will ultimately triumph over all darkness.”

At that moment, a chilling voice echoed in the empty hall: "Foolish mortal, do you think you can contend with my millennia of accumulated knowledge with just one book?"

Everyone was startled and looked around, but could not find the source of the sound.

“No need to look anymore, I have long since become one with this ruin. But,” the voice suddenly became playful, “if you can pass my test, perhaps I will consider giving up this boring game.”

The messenger of light, his eyes piercing, gripped the Book of Wisdom tightly. "The test we accept. But remember, whatever the outcome, the light will never be extinguished."

"A test? Sounds interesting." The new woman raised an eyebrow, her voice carrying an undeniable resolve. "We're not here for sightseeing. Bring on the storm!"

As the words fell, the hall suddenly trembled, the ground cracked open, forming a narrow passage leading deep into the hall. A powerful suction force surged from within the passage, as if to devour all living beings.

"This is the first hurdle, the Path of Courage." The chilling voice rang out again, tinged with an arrogant mockery. "One wrong step, and you're doomed."

The villagers looked at each other with fear, but then regained their courage in the resolute gazes of the Lightbringer and the new woman. They followed closely behind, cautiously entering the passage, each step accompanied by a heavy thud of their hearts.

"Look, even these ordinary people dare to follow you, it's truly touching," the voice mocked. "However, being moved won't save their lives."

"Shut up!" a young villager roared, a blacksmith's apprentice who was unarmed but full of courage. "Our lives are none of your business!"

Suddenly, a ghostly light shone from the surrounding walls, revealing terrifying images: the miserable state of the defeated and their desperate cries. The blacksmith's apprentice trembled involuntarily, but quickly, he took a deep breath and strengthened his resolve.

"Good lad, you've got guts." The new woman patted his back gently, her tone filled with admiration.

After a long journey, they finally emerged from the Path of Courage, where they were greeted by a vast underground space. In the center was a huge, intricate maze that seemed to have no end.

"The second challenge, the mystery of wisdom," the voice announced again. "Solve the maze and find the true exit, or you will be lost here forever."

The villagers exchanged bewildered glances, a sense of unease spreading through them. Just then, a young scholar wearing glasses stepped forward, adjusting his glasses, his eyes gleaming with wisdom.

"Don't worry, everyone. I've studied countless maze designs. As long as we analyze them calmly, we'll definitely find a way out." His words, though calm, were like a stabilizing force, gradually calming everyone's hearts.

Led by the scholar, the team began their exploration of the maze. Whenever they found themselves in dire straits, seemingly insignificant clues would guide them in the right direction, and whenever they found a mechanism, words of praise and encouragement would appear on the surrounding stone walls, as if the entire ruins were silently observing them, even secretly admiring their wisdom and perseverance.

Finally, they found the true exit of the maze, and a bright and open space opened up before them. In front of them was a stone chamber with an ancient stone tablet in the center, on which was engraved an ancient text that seemed to be a prophecy.

The messenger of light stepped forward and gently stroked the inscription on the stone tablet. Suddenly, a dazzling light burst forth from the stone tablet, illuminating the entire room and reflecting on his face.

“We succeeded! We passed the test!” His voice was filled with excitement. “Now, let’s put an end to this and face the final challenge.”

"Oh? So someone actually managed to get this far." The voice turned serious, seemingly surprised as well. "Then, let me show you the true power of darkness!"

Just as everyone prepared for the final challenge, a deep chant suddenly echoed from within the stone chamber. The voice was ancient and resonant, seemingly summoning something. The Lightbringer gripped the Book of Wisdom tightly and exchanged a resolute glance with the new woman.

"No matter what happens, we must face it together," he said.

“Of course, until the very last moment,” the new woman replied, her smile brimming with fearlessness and determination.

Just then, a deep yet clear voice came from the deepest part of the stone chamber, piercing through the thick fog and reaching the hearts of everyone.

"Remember, true victory lies not only in fighting the darkness, but also in illuminating the hearts of others and letting the light live on forever."
