Chapter 31 (Exclusive to Jinjiang Literature City)
Conan Edogawa is very troubled lately.
Ever since his last meeting with Kyung Won and learning that Gin was an undercover agent, he has been caught in a deep dilemma.
To be fair, he knew how risky it was to infiltrate the Black Organization. Even if he was forced to do something against his moral bottom line, it would be understandable. But that person was Gin!
Gin has always been the face of the Black Organization. Whether it's his signature long silver hair or his eye-catching black trench coat, he seems to have no awareness of being a member of the Black Organization and is always so flamboyant.
Since it was just the two of them at Poirot Cafe at that time, it was much easier for them to talk.
Conan Edogawa went straight to asking Tooru Amuro, "Mr. Amuro, what kind of person do you think Gin is?"
Amuro Tooru, a former member of the Japanese Public Security Bureau, wiped his teacup and casually remarked, "A worthless scoundrel who deserves to be shot ten thousand times over."
"..." Conan Edogawa paused for a moment, "Do you hate him that much?"
Amuro Tooru put down his teacup, looked at Edogawa Conan, and said, "But compared to Akai Shuichi, Gin is still quite likable."
Conan Edogawa: "...Because he's an FBI agent?"
“That’s right,” Amuro Tooru said. “I hate the FBI. Running around on other people’s turf without their permission and committing crimes, the FBI and the Black Organization are no good.”
In his eyes, the FBI agents who smuggled themselves in were just as detestable as the Black Organization.
However, a large part of the reason for this was his resentment towards Shuichi Akai.
Because Shuichi Akai couldn't save his best friend; because Shuichi Akai, despite being a righteous FBI agent, watched helplessly as his best friend committed suicide...
In short, it's all Shuichi Akai's fault!
Conan Edogawa knew that the two of them didn't get along, so he wisely kept quiet.
Amuro Tooru blinked and asked, "Why did you suddenly bring up Gin?"
He was a little worried that the young detective might have been up to something big behind his back.
"It's nothing, I just suddenly felt that Gin, as someone from the underworld, acts a bit too flamboyantly," Conan Edogawa said. "It doesn't quite fit the style of the Black Organization."
Amuro Tooru was silent for a while, then said, "Because Gin is special."
Conan Edogawa looked at him with a puzzled expression.
"Conan, what do you think Gin's position is in the Black Organization?" Amuro Tooru suddenly asked.
"He should be the third in command," Conan Edogawa said, "second only to the boss and Rum."
“That’s not how it works,” Amuro Tooru explained. “Gin may seem to have a lot of power, but that’s not actually the case.”
Gin is involved in many of the Black Organization's activities, from large-scale operations like shooting down the Tokyo Tower to smaller-scale threats and extortion. Gin's presence in any mission feels perfectly natural.
Catching undercover agents is his primary duty, and saving lives is also part of his job. It can be said that the number of people killed by GIN in the Black Organization is just as many as the number of people he has saved.
GIN seems to have a lot of authority, able to shoot at suspected codenamed members at will, but with just one text message from Rum, GIN has to obediently release them.
Amuro Tooru once discussed with Fushimori Kagemitsu why Gin's power fluctuated so much, but they didn't come to any reliable conclusion.
“GIN is special,” Amuro Tooru said. “As you probably know, some codename members who fail to complete their missions or cause trouble for the organization due to their mistakes will be ruthlessly eliminated by the organization.”
Conan Edogawa nodded.
"Do you remember how many times GIN made mistakes?" Amuro Tooru asked.
Conan Edogawa's eyes widened.
Yes, even Gin made mistakes during missions, and some of them were quite serious.
For example, Shuichi Akai and Shiho Miyano.
“It was Gin’s responsibility to purge the undercover agents, but Shuichi Akai is still alive and kicking, and has even caused the Black Organization a lot of trouble,” Amuro Tooru said. “But Gin has not been punished at all.”
Moreover, the incident involving Shiho Miyano can be entirely attributed to Gin's negligence.
Shuichi Akai wasn't recruited by Gin, nor was he his partner; the two hadn't even met. His situation was somewhat understandable, but Shiho Miyano's was a different story.
As a researcher within the organization, Shiho Miyano's importance far surpasses that of Shuichi Akai, especially since her research is the boss's most valued asset.
But how did Gin do it?
He directly killed Shiho Miyano's most cherished older sister, which aroused Shiho Miyano's dissatisfaction.
Shiho Miyano then used the cessation of research as a means of protest, but Gin's reaction was even more straightforward and brutal.
He simply locked Shiho Miyano in a room by herself, without installing any cameras or assigning anyone to monitor her 24 hours a day.
As expected, Shiho Miyano escaped.
Her escape caused a major upheaval within the organization. The boss was furious, and many people even died in the turmoil. However, GIN, who was primarily responsible, did not receive any punishment.
This is also what Amuro Tooru always felt was wrong.
Any member who makes a mistake will be punished by the organization, and even Vermouth, the organization's most favored woman, is no exception.
However, GIN was never punished.
Why? Why does the boss of the Black Organization never punish Gin?
"It's impossible that Gin is the boss's son, is it?" Fushimoto Kagemitsu once joked.
Before knowing that the boss's identity was Karasuma Renya, Amuro Tooru would have thought that such a possibility was not out of the question, but now, looking at Gin's face, Amuro Tooru couldn't find any trace of Asian features.
Perhaps GIN is the boss's chosen successor?
The guess was so absurd that Amuro Tooru quickly put it out of his mind.
The Japanese place great importance on family lineage and would never hand over an organization they built to an outsider. Moreover, Karasuma Renya was pursuing immortality, and he would not give the organization's power to anyone.
Conan Edogawa originally wanted to get information about Gin from Tooru Amuro, but unexpectedly, he has more and more doubts.
After saying goodbye to Amuro Tooru, Conan Edogawa strolled through the streets in deep thought, completely unaware that someone was secretly following him.
While waiting at a traffic light, Conan Edogawa was suddenly grabbed on the shoulder. Before he could turn around to see who it was, he heard the person lean close to his ear and say in a deep voice, "Shinichi Kudo, you're too curious."
Conan Edogawa didn't dare turn around; he was so scared he almost jumped out of his skin.
Has his identity been exposed? Is he a member of the Black Organization, or...?
Before he could start to have any wild thoughts, Conan Edogawa felt a warm, large hand pat his head.
"Oh dear, it seems I went a bit too far." Jing Yuan looked at Conan Edogawa's pale face and said somewhat embarrassedly, "As an apology, let me treat you to dinner."
Conan Edogawa stared blankly at Jingyuan's face, his eyes unblinking.
"Hmm?" Jing Yuan was a little confused, and waved his hand in front of his eyes. "Snap out of it, little one."
Conan Edogawa then spoke up, "You heard what I said to Mr. Amuro?"
Jing Yuan smiled and said, "What do you think?"
The child pouted and said, "Mr. Jingyuan, has anyone ever told you that you're annoying?"
“You,” Jing Yuan said.
Conan Edogawa: "..."
Seeing Conan Edogawa looking at him with a helpless expression, Jingyuan couldn't help but laugh a few times and said, "You look much cuter like this."
In his opinion, Conan Edogawa is still just a child, and it's not good for him to always be frowning. Children should be carefree and do what they like.
However, Jingyuan also understood that Conan Edogawa was different from ordinary children, and if he could, he himself would not want to be involved in such a terrible thing as the Black Organization.
"What did you use to scare me just now?" Conan Edogawa asked.
Jing Yuan pulled out a toy gun from behind his back: "Look, I'm a law-abiding citizen."
Moreover, he doesn't need guns to kill people; even a leaf can be as powerful as a bullet in his hands.
The streetlights changed color, and the two of them walked together across the street.
"Why are you stopping me from investigating?" Conan Edogawa asked, puzzled.
Jing Yuan, with his hands in his pockets and a smile playing on his lips, said, "Because the organization is about to disappear."
"Is it really that easy to eliminate such a transnational criminal organization?" Conan Edogawa thought he was just bluffing.
Jingyuan wasn't angry; it's normal to be suspicious, especially since Conan Edogawa is a detective.
“It’s right for you to be highly vigilant about the organization, but there’s no need to see it as something too terrifying,” Jing Yuan said. “No matter how powerful it seems, it’s just a mouse hiding in the shadows. If the cat wants to, it can only end up dead.”
Without the covert support of the official organization led by the Onsa people, Karasuma Renya would never have been able to keep going for so long.
Jingyuan said, "You should worry more about yourself than the organization."
"What do you mean?" Conan Edogawa's eyes sharpened.
"If your identity as Shinichi Kudo is exposed, what do you think the consequences will be?" Jing Yuan said with a smile. "Putting everything else aside, the Japanese authorities will not let you off easily."
Conan Edogawa knew he was telling the truth, which was why he dared not easily reveal his identity.
Rejuvenation—that's something no one can resist.
"So, what do you want to say?" Conan Edogawa looked up at him.
Jing Yuan smiled and said, "I want to make a deal with you."
"What kind of deal?" Conan Edogawa had a vague idea of what it was about.
Jingyuan said, "I will help you restore your identity as Shinichi Kudo, but you have to give me your memories of this period of time."
Conan Edogawa's eyes widened.
Besides being shocked that Jing Yuan had a way to restore him to his original state, he was even more incredulous at the second half of the sentence.
"You want to erase my memories of that period?" Conan Edogawa asked.
Jing Yuan nodded.
He had dealt with abundant evil creatures for far too long and was well aware of just how insane humanity's pursuit of immortality could be.
“I don’t think you can keep this secret forever. After all, quite a few people around you have already guessed your identity,” Jing Yuan said. “Of course, you can refuse. I won’t force you to do things my way.”
People always have to pay the price for their choices, just like the immortal boat. If their later experiences hadn't been so tragic, making them realize the cost of blindly pursuing immortality, they wouldn't have chosen to follow the hunters' footsteps.
