Chapter 161
"Could I see that book? I'm so bored," the boy's voice rang out, sounding a little tired. He turned his head to look at the paladin sitting opposite him.
The paladin looked up at him and said, "You're not presentable like this. You should save your breath."
"Can you read it to me?" The boy's voice was soft, almost pleading.
The paladin stiffened for a moment, then stood up to leave for a while.
"Haha, you've taken a liking to me." The high priest in the next cell laughed as he looked at the paladin. "Reading a book won't kill you, and I'm bored too, so I'd like to listen as well."
"Who gave him that face?" The paladin's voice was soft, but it carried obvious anger.
That was Qing's body, but now that boy has become a demon king, his entire body tightly bound by chains.
Although he knew the title had changed hands, the paladin wavered the moment he asked for the book.
The first thing this child said to him was that he asked if he could read the book he was holding.
That was a scripture, one copy for each member of the church. If nothing unexpected happened, Qing should have read and memorized it, but now he seemed to have become an ignorant child again, asking it some very childish questions.
Although he was originally a child, he has now become that stranger again.
It still hurts a little when I see it.
"Are you the one who turned him into this?" The paladin slowly removed his helmet, revealing a face covered in scars. His pale hair and haggard appearance clearly showed that he was a man crushed by arduous work.
"I only created a vessel to nurture the Demon King; I didn't decide on the sacrifice. I originally planned to sacrifice myself." The high priest's voice was tinged with helplessness: "But at the last moment, I thought it best not to cause you any more trouble."
"You've been causing me trouble ever since you decided to start training the Demon King. Now you'd better stay put here obediently." The paladin paused and said, "Next to take my shift are two children who have just joined the Church of Canada and are knights. If they encounter any danger, please don't stand idly by."
"You're going to be busy again, aren't you?"
"I suppose so. The Saints and the Ruins have already left. Although Benny has cleared out too many dangerous monsters, we still need someone to deal with high-risk targets." He paused and said, "Anyway, I'm very busy right now. If possible, please help process those documents."
"Hey, hey, hey, I'm still being held in custody."
“Consider it a labor camp.” The paladin put on his helmet. “I’ve put the key by the wall, within your reach. I’m your supervisor, I can’t let you out. But if you sneak out on your own, there’s nothing I can do.”
After he was shown that he was free to come and go, he left the prison and went outside. The smell of burning had not yet dissipated, and there was a foul stench everywhere.
This prison is located beneath the former church, where Ghost Lord was imprisoned for a period of time. It is underground, and even though the surface area has been almost completely cleared out, this place is still usable.
The ruins outside are being dealt with quickly. There are many sorcerers here, so both construction and clearing are very efficient.
But first, we need to build the outer walls to prevent the monsters from being attracted here. There's a Demon King here, and this place has a strange attraction for him.
We can only be thankful that there are many high-ranking clergy here, currently on the outer wall. With these guys around, we can finally feel safe on the other side of the wall.
He was a little uneasy about the dungeon. He turned his head to look at the tightly closed door, and after thinking for a long time, he turned and left.
Benny probably insisted on staying because she wanted them to help with the reconstruction. She cares about this place and is willing to make things a little better for the city in this way.
Inside the dungeon, the high priest opened the cell door and came out, sitting in the spot where the paladin had been sitting and beginning to organize the documents.
This was originally its job; long ago, the paladins would go out to guard, while it stayed behind to work on the text. Qing watched it from the side.
There was still no difference. The paladin was outside protecting the place from monsters, he was processing the documents, and Qing was watching him. It seemed that to him, there was no difference at all.
“I did what you asked me to do, and we’re even now.” Qing looked at him and said, “No matter what happens to me now, it has nothing to do with you anymore.”
"Is that your first words to me?" The high priest nodded. "Thank you for your hard work. You are free to do whatever you want from now on. However, we will punish you if you violate the rules here again."
"Hmm." Qing looked at the chains binding her, then turned to look at him: "Can this be unlocked?"
"no."
"reason?"
“You are too dangerous. We have no means to control you right now.” The high priest paused and said, “Besides, many people here hate you.”
After a moment of silence, the child slowly lowered his head and mumbled softly.
"You were the one who told me to destroy things as I pleased," Qing's voice sounded a little aggrieved. "But now you're punishing me."
He lost the Chaos that possessed him, which had been weakened to the point of being merely blue after the calamity. This original body had not yet condensed a decent magic core, so he did not yet have the magic power to protect himself.
Aside from being able to directly control the monsters he comes into contact with, he is just an ordinary human child.
However, that is not a capability that can be ignored; it must be taken seriously.
"I don't recall you being able to come out." The door was suddenly kicked open, and the swordsmith appeared in the doorway carrying a black machete, looking at the high priest sitting there with displeasure.
"I just sneaked out, and I'm currently in a labor camp." The high priest didn't pay much attention to the guy who had just come in, but instead focused on reading various text reports about the city: "It would be impolite to ask for hospitality. As you can see, this is a dungeon, and apart from the most basic sustenance, there's nothing of any worthwhile food."
"Who wants to eat your food?" The knifesmith frowned and walked to the vicinity of the cage, looking at the boy who was tied up.
Qing looked up at the girl who was squatting in front of him and looking at him, and felt a little uncomfortable.
"What are you looking at?" Qing shifted her body, getting closer to the corner of the wall.
“That’s strange, after all, I’ve only seen a Demon King a few times.” The swordsmith paused. “Perhaps this child is now defined as a demon? He has lost most of his magic power, and only his abilities remain.”
"Probably, I'm not sure." The high priest turned to look at her and asked, "What are you here for? You couldn't have come just to see this child, could you?"
“I just wanted to see if you had received the punishment you deserved.” The swordsmith straightened up and turned to look at him, saying, “But as I see it, you’re alive and well. I’m furious.”
......
When the twisted bushes came into view, the eerie atmosphere sent chills down one's spine.
"I've heard people talk about it often, but this is really my first time here." Dedeline crossed her arms and said with a hint of helplessness, "Um, don't you guys think it's a bit creepy?"
"Hmm? I've been here a few times, I'm used to it." Yak wrote in his journal without looking up: "What do you think Lingsen is like?"
“At least she should be a match for the beauty sitting in front,” Deedris said, pointing to the figure who looked like she was in a painting. “What do you think? The one sitting in front?”
“These are the trees used to absorb chaos,” Chuli explained, turning around as he sat in front. “It will be much better a few hundred meters further in. Once you pass through the barrier, there shouldn’t be any problems.”
“Indeed, there doesn’t seem to be a safe zone around here, and the level of chaos is quite high.” Deedri rubbed her chin and said, “Although it is a bit eerie when we came in, there is only fog. This should still be in the chaotic region, right?”
“Yes, there’s no safe zone here, so this is the only way to create a pseudo-safe zone.” Ark looked around and said, “Can you produce some food here?”
"There should be enough to eat, though not much, but there is some production," Chuli said. "Thinking about it, it makes sense; it's just a little to satisfy a craving. It's unlikely to fill you up. Most elves rely on absorbing magic power when they're hungry to replenish their energy."
"Hey, this isn't what I expected." Dedeline looked up at the tall trees. "This is the first time I've seen this. They're even taller than I imagined."
The carriage was a bit bumpy, and she felt a little dizzy from the shaking. She held her head and looked around helplessly.
Something seemed to be hidden among the bushes.
"There are wolves," Xiaobai whispered after noticing them.
"Wolf" is a general term for any monster that resembles a wolf, and everyone knows that it's definitely not a normal wolf.
“Don’t show hostility,” Ark said. “Just do what you’re doing. These wolves are raised by the elves.”
"Is that what the legendary elven wolf looks like?" Dedeline pointed to the two-meter-tall creature not far away and swallowed hard. "It's kind of handsome."
Chuli shrugged, indicating that he had nothing to say about the matter.
"Is that wolf a calamity?" Noni asked the little spider cautiously, huddled there.
Noni had a strange trust in the little spider, perhaps because he had brought it out of that kind of place. For the past few days, he'd kept a few steps away from the spider almost every day. A strange confidence made him feel that the little spider would protect him.
"Probably. That thing hides its aura very well; I have no way of knowing it." The little spider hesitated before asking, "How many Demon Kings are there among the elves now?"
“Quite a few.” Yakcha counted on his fingers: “One Elf King, three of the Three Sages. At least four are known right now.”
"The Three Sages?"
"It's a title of reverence among the elves, a position they don't hold, and they have considerable freedom in their daily lives. The Elf King is the administrator." Ark thought for a moment and said, "There should be seven more guardians, all of whom should have accumulated experience from the Chaos Calamity. The four guardian gods are probably also included. These are the ones that have been registered, and there may be others unknown."
"Just the known four Demon Lords and eleven Chaos Calamities?" Dedeline felt a little sweaty upon hearing this: "No wonder they are a race directly chosen by the Demon God."
"Where are your fire goats?" the little spider asked casually.
“The chieftain alone is a chaotic calamity,” Dedeline said softly, resting her head on her hand. “The Church can destroy him if it so chooses.”
"But you have a very good relationship with humans." The little spider smiled helplessly and could only try to smooth things over: "Not to mention us spiders, I only remember that the Queen might have a Calamity level. I don't even know if there are any higher levels."
“But now you spiders pose a much greater threat than fire goats; there are simply too many of you,” Chuli said, looking at him. “And most of them are not intelligent. It’s quite rare; here, we execute any that are not intelligent, yet you manage to live together in harmony.”
"It's alright, we're all the same kind, everyone's a monster, so I don't find them disgusting anymore." The little spider lowered its head, four spider legs growing out from behind it: "Right now, only this part looks like a spider; my true form has become human. I guess I'll get beaten up if I go back."
After saying that, he put it away and looked at the silent little white creature: "What about you? I remember the fox demon clan is quite nice."
“Well, I don’t really know. I was given to the church as a gift when I was little because of my special fur.” She paused. “It’s not that I hate them because of it. After all, I met a kind person like Benny, and I fully understand why they did it. But I still feel that since they don’t want me anymore, then I have nothing to do with them anymore.”
Those who had absolutely no interest in this topic had already moved aside, leaving only Lady looking at them with a hint of envy. Her own kind were all puppets, not even truly monsters in the strictest sense.
Currently, the only demon races that have the power to oppose the Church are those directly protected by the Demon God. Races without such power can only choose to depend on humans. They must make themselves more pleasing to humans, be humble and cautious, in order to gain acceptance.
Suddenly the atmosphere turned cold, not because everyone felt awkward talking, but because everyone was turning to look at Ark.
"What are you?" Dedeline's voice carried a hint of anger. "It's been so long and you still haven't said a word about yourself."
"I remember you have abilities, but Benny told me your magic mark isn't your own." Little White asked curiously, "Then you're a monster? What race are you?"
"Why can't you believe I'm human? Little Spider, do you believe I'm human?" Ark turned his head and looked at Chrison, who also looked confused.
“Speak up, is there any need to hide this?” Chuli, who was sitting in front of him, turned to look at him. “At least tell us what race you are.”
Having run out of ideas, Yak scratched his face, a little embarrassed, and said:
"Perhaps it was a zombie." He paused and said, "That was a long, long time ago, and I've almost forgotten about it."
